I've rekindled an old hobby of mine that I used to apply to Cartoons and instead have been trying it out on porn. The hobby was simply this: Selecting music from whatever source and then listening to it while watching muted video from a very different source. The oldest example may be all the folks (myself included) who have listened to Pink Floyd's album, Dark Side of the Moon (played twice), while watching The Wizard of Oz. While the idea that it was designed to be listened in such a ritual is absolute bollocks, it does match up nicely rather frequently. The secret, of course, is that humans as natural pattern recognizers will find music matching up well with damn near anything they are watching as long as it changes movement frequently. I used to watch the Cartoon Network with the sound off and play various CDs I had around. My favorite at the time was to listen to Sex Mob's album Solid Sender (example track) while watching Tom & Jerry. Frankly, Tom & Jerry had enough good visual rhythms that would change and then return that it worked great with many different albums. This turned toward porn recently as I was watching some of X-Art's videos and Hegre-Art's massage videos and was somewhat annoyed when they'd occasionally start out with relaxing ambient music and then turn it off halfway through. So I started muting the videos and then loading up my Ambient station on Pandora and watching them that way. After that, I started messing about more with different music and watching how it changed the viewing experience. I was recently very entertained by watching four Facial cumshot compilation videos simultaneously (one in each corner of the screen) while listening to Beethoven's Symphony #7 in A, Opus 92:2, Allegretto as performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra while conducted by Georg Solti. (Here is Georg Solti performing it with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.) It adds such import and power to the video that it really changes the experience. I found it both humorous and awe-inspiring simultaneously. I'm planning on trying out other music soon, maybe works by Ennio Morricone... Anyway, does anyone else mess around with listening to music while viewing porn? Any interesting combinations? Experiences? Et cetera? "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Messmer's recent comment (see above) got me thinking about HD content in general and how most of my Blu-Ray collection consists of Hollywood movies that long predate the digital age. This of course is because they used real film, which has a reasonably high resolution. That made think that much of my absolute favorite porn, that which comes from the 70s and 80s, was frequently shot using film. So the topic question is simply this: Why aren't we seeing high definition, digitally remastered, blu-ray copies of old pornography? Have these old film reels been preserved? Is it simply a lack of demand? Or have these cultural treasures been lost? I, for one, would love to see Marilyn Chambers in "Insatiable" in glorious high definition with proper colour accuracy and all that. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" I just ran across the rather shallow but certainly topical BBC article about the decline of profits in the porn industry. We've all heard the story before, but it is interesting to see it brought up again in mainstream media.
It is crazy to think a name like Tommy Gunn is pulling in $40K before taxes and without any benefits. I know we all preach to the choir quite regularly about the importance of supporting pay sites and not downloading illegal porn, but it is some what shocking at times to see that one of the top male performers is making about the same salary of that of a store manager at McDonald's. It's when you run across stats like that that at least my attitude toward Digital Rights Management lightens up a bit. The article also makes the point that some people find it more morally reprehensible to actually purchase porn than if they "happen" to watch it for free. I find the Music and Film industries' complaints about content piracy are usually rather hollow mostly because studies have shown for years that easier access to their content actually boasts sales. They had the same fears when the reel-to-reel equipment became available to the consumer, and again with audio tapes, and vcr, and cd, et cetera - everytime equaled a boost in sales. Secondly, in regards to music and film, the majority of people downloading the content haven't the money to purchase it - but they do have the free time to figure out how to download it. Those with the money, don't have the time, so they are more inclined to purchase. However, if porn is clashing with one's morale compass, that sort of blows the system apart. So here is to the porn industry and a hope for a bright future with less stigma and more consumers! "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Looking back at porn over the years, a strange change happened rather recently in the big porn explosion of DVD and Internet porn. Porn Stars stopped dressing like normal people or celebrities and started dressing exclusively in an absurd, over-sexed style that can only be purchased at specialty shops that cater to that market. It ranges from the raised heeled sandals with the excessively thick soles to the pink fishnet stockings and the mini skirts that could be mistaken for a belt. In the 70's, 80's and even the 90's - much of what Porn Stars started the scene wearing could be worn out in public with out being arrested or people jokingly remarking that the wearer looks like they should be doing porn. They certainly dressed sexily, but it was as a woman might dress to impress her date either in the club or in the bedroom (in the case of lingerie). Even the lingerie of current porn wouldn't be touched by many women as it projects a level of "slut" that they aren't comfortable with. Older porn was a product of its time, the hair styles and clothing choices were very much in tune with what was hip at that moment. The models were often made up to look as though they had just walked off the set of a music video or some other pop-culture venue. These days, the models would look out of place anywhere other than strip clubs and porn sets. Their style is almost time-less, out of touch with reality completely. Granted this doesn't apply to male porn stars as much nor does it apply for the amateur market either. But the amateur market also forbids dressing the girls up beyond make-up and hair - they wear basic street clothes, as though they were going out to the supermarket. (Abby Winters, for example, specifically states that they avoid any shape or form of Glamour if they can.) Now granted for a few years Britney Spears made a career out of being a Pop Star that dressed like a Porn Star - but Janet Jackson tried her hand at it at the Super Bowl and got shut down so fast that it must have made her head spin. So what happened to the producers of main stream porn, is that community so close knit, so self-involved that it has forgotten about the Pop Culture surrounding it? How did this trend start and gain so much momentum? It has spread across the world like a wild-fire. Deviations from the base style are few and far between. It is a curious phenomena - and while I appreciate the porn style - it does sexualize the models with great efficiency - I would appreciate the clothing styles chosen by hollywood celebrities as well. A red carpet wardrobe, if you will. Any thoughts on the origins, continuation or the simple existence of Fashion Du Porn Star? "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" The web, with its massive audience has created an a viable market out of minuscule niches - something that is popularly referred to now as "The Long Tail", i.e. selling small volumes of hard-to-find content to many customers. Despite this explosion of niches (The Best Porn now lists a hundred of them) I've found a few niches that have limited and poor service from available websites. So the question is: What niche market websites would you like to see created? "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Second Grand Order Poobah in the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalo | |
