I'm grieving as well. Cried all night watching TV and hearing the stories of the brave teachers and police saving many of those children. Like everyone, my secondary thoughts were that something needs to be done to stop the madness. I bought a USB3 EZ Dock 2 so I could keep expanding. The idea is like external drives, but with the ability to swap out drives and store them on the shelf, so to speak. The problem with these things, I've found out are they corrupt the data quite often. So far, I've been able to recover most of the corrupted data. | |

CT, but you missed Windows 2000, which was the best at the time. Many companies still use it as their server OS. I do hope Win 8 will buck the trend overall, but not having a DVD player won't kill the deal for me. I'd like to see improved file & folder operations. It's gotten closer with meta tags, but even that needs a lot of expansion and useability. | |

Don't know, but could you need more RAM? The standard 3-4gb in most machines aren't going to cut it (pun intended). My guess is that splitters will load the entire file into RAM. I noticed, in FreeVideo Dub, that a large DVD file converted to compressed format will sometimes choke, even with 8gb. The Freemake Converter seems to work better with extremely large files. | |

I doubt that there's a cache of "royalty-free" music tracks somewhere for videographers. Most likely, royalties are paid to the copyright holder and/or publisher for their use by somebody. I opted out of the Google history last night by deleting my Google history. It is "supposed" to keep from writing to the history file from now on when I search with Google. Permanently that is until you change it again.  You can also label a drive. I label mine by alphabetically, A-D, E-F, etc, for the actresses folders they contain, but you could label with anything you wish. | |

Cyber, you can link to a file on your hd several ways. here's the two I use most: rt click the file and "create shortcut", then drag or move the shortcut to another folder or drive. rt click in any folder space or even the desktop, select New Shortcut, browse for the file and name the link. Is that what you were asking about? | |

There is a small database program called MyFiles from Argentum that does an excellent job of scanning drives & folders, and allows you to build a database of specific info on the scene or clip. This works well for a video collection. You can launch videos or pix (or any file) from it's browser and can also create html or spreadsheet reports. Creating the db is pretty easy, but you do have to understand it's structure pretty well. I've been working with databases since the 80's dBase days, so I found it not too difficult to grasp; easier than MySQL or Access. MyFiles took me a few weeks of study, trial & error before I was comfortable with creating a good file info db. It's main failing is the same as all e-catalogs...once you change the drive letter the file is on, you have to rescan it and re-enter all your info. It does indicate the drive ID number (not the assigned letter) for each file and I suppose you could figure out a way to change it to the new drive ID. | |
