The other factor that's not been mentioned with respect to video quality is the bit-rate and this needs to increase with the large video sizes otherwise you get grainy video or "jaggies". I've found that a 1280x720 video encoded at around 2600Kbps looks okay, some sites encode at around 4000Kbps, but then some sizes encode at around 8000Kbps which seems a major waste and results in huge file sizes. In Windows media player you can check video bitrate in the File->Properties dialog. | |

I think "less is more" and "keep it simple" are approaches that could be applied to a lot of porn sites these days. All I need from a porn scene is: 1. My collection is probably about 1.5TB with half of that not backed up, but I have been doing a bit of pruning, not actually deleting the videos I don't want but putting them in an "unwanted" folder, just in case I change my mind about any of them. My aim is to get my collection onto a 120GB drive (meaning about 100GB of storage space) that I'll salvaging from an old PC so I've got a LOT of prunig to still do. | |

It's the same in the UK, most ISPs impose a monthly cap on the amount you can download, though a few apply that cap to certain times of the day, so downloads between midnight and 8am don't count towards your download limit, in which case faster download speeds are a benefit. | |

I guess it all depends on what turns you on and as time passes, that changes, but the cost and convenience of storage doesn't really impact my wish to trim my collection. When I first started browsing on-line porn in the 90's from newsgroups - it took ages to download the smallest pics using my 14.4K dial-up modem - I DL'ed anything with an attractive girl in it, but then found I would keep coming back to getting turned on by the same few pics, usually of brunettes in stockings. I didn't join a pay-site because I was worried about my credit card details being ripped off, but when I did eventually sign up to one, a whole new world of quality pics opened up and I started downloading everything that looked good and saving it to CD without looking at it for long. My laptop's hard drive filled up and I backed-up to 250MB zip disks, and when they became cheap enough, CD-Rs. I didn't have to use that many CDs to archive stuff and I didn't feel the need to discard any content because regardless of whether I looked at it regularly, it was hard-won, after all I'd written a small and simple download manager app that could load a web page and grab all the image links from the thumbnail links and download the hi-res pics to disk overnight or whilst I was at work. I didn't start DL'ing videos until home broadband came along, then I downloaded less pics and more videos because I'd moved on from pics and I could DL the videos fairly quickly as they weren't very hi-res so the file sizes were small then. At that point I'd started joining a pay site every other month and downloading loads of content, archiving it to DVD-R and at was at this point where I found I was spending lots of time burning to DVD. Disk space cost too much to justify and besides, DVDs were supposedly a safe permanent backup medium. I now have an archive of over 50 DVD-Rs with a spreadsheet on each disk listing each clip with an abbreviated summary and rating out of 10. When USB disks became more affordable, I bought a 500GB drive and went through the DVD-Rs and copied my favourite scenes (rated at least 8/10) onto the disk. From then on I saved all my acquired porn onto the disk until it ran out of space, then got a 1TB disk and later I got another 1TB drive as backup for the bigger disk. When the 1TB filled up, it was then I decided to start trimming what I didn't watch much. After my first trimming pass, I'd only purged about 300GB of content and felt I still had way too much, and realised that I was keeping stuff that I'd watched once and never again. The problem is, you choose video clips based on the screencaps from the pay-site and you also automatically DL stuff from your fave girls and some of it you never watch again. I appreciate it's difficult to get rid of stuff you hardly watch 'cos you're thinking, "well hey this scene looks hot in the screencaps" or "she's a hot actress and I love her stuff" and when you get time, you'll settle down and watch those clips and love them. But my personal experience is that loads of content takes up too much of my time and disk space and isn't worth hanging on to. So over the past 3-4 years, I've worked out what I like and am junking the rest - sure it's difficult to get rid of movies with my favourite pornstars but if I ain't watching those vids that much compared with others, I may as well get rid. As I've already said in a previous post, if and when I have more free time (when I'm old and house-bound), I'm sure I'll have no problem finding and downloading those clips which I deleted, and by then there'll be new hot pornstars to keep me going. I have a pair of 120GB drives from an old PC which I plan to use to fill up with my trimmed collection, one disk plus a backup and I'll aim to keep at 120GB - well it'll probably be 100GB taking into account the way drives are sized - meaning that stuff that is rarely watched will get junked to make way for any new hotter stuff. My personal opinion on this whole growing your porn collection thing is that it does consume a lot of your time, and I've other more worthwhile stuff to spend my free time on, so I'd rather have a fairly small porn collection stashed away somewhere that I can revisit from time to time. The way I see it is, that if in years to come you find that you miss some content you deleted, you can always go get it again and chances are, you'll download it faster as broadband speeds increase over time, and possibly the content will have been re-encoded to the latest hi-def codec. I joined Private Gold way back in the late 90's when broadband was a pipe-dream: max speed was 14.4K dial-up modems which where available at the time. Before that my porn collection came from newsgroup postings of photo-sets from various sources, including Private and that's how I ended up joining Private Gold - great quality pics but you couldn't download them as zipped sets and so I wrote a program that would download all the images linked from a page of thumbnails, otherwise I would spend ages downloading them. | |

I've noticed lots of porn content from pay sites ends up linked on various porn forums to subscription-based file-hosting sites such as RapidShare, HotFile, DepositFiles, FileSonic and loads of others. I'll decline to name the porn forums but they're easily found via google and a few pornstar names. It does make me wonder if the owners of the content that's being ripped-off have majority shares or even own these file-hosting sites? After all it's better to get at least some revenue from the pirates rather than none at all, even if it's less than the membership fee to your pay-site. Just a thought... | |

How do you download content from porn sites? Do you use a download manager or just the standard "Save file" dialog? The various adult sites I've been to all work with download managers to varying degrees. Some sites use your browser's login dialog to let you log in to the site and so DL managers which allow you to enter a username and password against a site will work okay. Net Transport allows you to do this. Most sites have their own login pages which a download manager won't know about and so the dl manager might work provided you're logged into the site, otherwise it won't, as I've found in the past. Also, if you have downloads lined up in your DL manager from a previous session where you logged into your favourite site, you may find that even when you're logged in to the site, the download manager won't be able to download the files because the download URL used by your d/l manager contains a login session id that may be unique to your previous session which is no longer active, and so you may need to update the queued files with the new session id - very tedious. Of course, if the same session id is used by the website whenever you login, then that's no problem, as I'm finding with Videobox Some sites won't work with a download manager other than one that's fully integrated into the browser, such as the DownThemAll! extension for Firefox which I've used with most sites and it works very well. In fact I mainly use this d/l manager. But I am curious as to what other forum users are using for downloading content so post your experiences and recommendations here. Thanks | |

I guess someone's liking of a porn star is related to what they find attractive in a woman, which could translate to someone they went out with in the past or had a crush on. Hmmm, CrystalDiskInfo looks very useful. For downloading files I use NetTransport which even downloads streamed content. For those sites that don't work with a download manager I find that the Down Them All Firefox add-in almost always works. | |
