Its a good way to assess if you want to stick around for 30 days - and if the site is good enough you won't begrudge laying out $30 for a full month. If all sites offered a cheap trial with full members access they would see an increase in monthly subscriptions - if their content was good of course

It's been my experience that sites that don't offer a real (meaning full) trial, have either something to hide or exclusive content is poor and or lacking. That said, I have tried sites without trial and been very satisfied. Best analogy is if you go to a restaurant and there is a meal a little costly on the menu Are you more likely to buy it, if you get to taste it first? A trial is just that a taste at whats on the menu.

The only sites I joined without trying the trial first were Brazilian Facials and Cathys Cravings. Both sites were excellent and I think they would do even more business if they offered a two-day, full access trial, although Cathy's website is cheap enough to not need one. But Brazilian Facials is still pretty much unknown and could do better if they let people sample it first. Trials are the easiest way to determine if to join a site - I've decided against really bad sites after sampling the area and stayed on others (videobox, bangbros) for over four months thanks to a trial.

It all depends on how much of the site you can access with a trial membership

If a site offers a trial, it's like any other trial service: get people to use it and hope that they like it. If they don't, then it's really no loss to the website (they got paid for the trial). And if they do, then the website might get a subscriber.

I have once, but though how immoral it was afterwards.
Since, I haven't subscribed to any trial memberships anyway, but I think now, if I did subscribe to a trial membership and liked the content, I'd only download a bit and let the rebill occur after the trial expires before I started to download everything.

I see the purpose of trial memberships as a way of seeing what the site's got. But they have to give you a full taste. I have no problem with a limit - eg 3 FULL vids, 3 pics sets, but I think it is unfair of them to limit it to "only 3 pics". You are, after all, paying something.
I also think that with a trial membership they should reall make it clear what the limits are - spell out the rules, and people will acept them. Don't spell out the rules, and people acuse you of trickery. I don;t see how anyone can say thayt using a TM to skim off content is 'trashy' - afterall, the site makes that decision; they set up their own limits, and they have to live with it.

If you are only after the content of a particular model or specific sets, then it is a good way to legally obtain it.
