I haven't use IM is a long time but when I use to I always used AIM, because most of my friends were using it. However all my family overseas preferred to use yahoo messenger, so I had to use that to talk to them. Overall I think that AIM was just easier to use for me, but I'm sure they have changed since the last time I used them.

For me, it's none. I don't like the idea of IM's because there are enough distractions already, technological and otherwise, to fracture mental concentration. And I've managed to carry on in life with no one complaining that I don't use one.
But for those who need it or just simply enjoy it, I'm sure it's quite another story.

I use Gaim/Pidgin and other open-source multi-platform messenger services only because I use both AIM and MSN (as well as a few others) on a regular basis and they just make it easier to maintain multiple accounts without having multiple programs.

I use Yahoo but still have a very old 5 digit ICQ number, now they are like 12 13 or something.
I have used MSN. sucks. and aim is a waste of time for me. I used to use VP when it was free in the 90's.
I use Yahoo now as a messagre board not for chats but for close friends and family to leave me notes, duh I know its like email but seems some ppl just use it anyways. Google has some new thingy called Lively its slow even on my quad core 512 vid , 8 gig ram machine i use now its slow like a snail.

I voted Skype. It's used for phone calls to friends with a cam. Actually looking more carefully at the poll I think I should change my vote to "other" since I don't do instant messaging. Will do so now.

Pidgin. I used to use AIM exclusively, but as people started diversifying their preferences for IM systems, I needed a program that could interface with them all. These days, that program is Pidgin.

I don't find IM very interesting or useful and I don't have any friends who regularly IM so I pretty much leave mine sitting by itself on my desktop.

Used to use AIM but between not using it much at all and having a higher percentage of spam messages verses legit messages, I stopped using it. So no IM for me, not necessary.

Does "I don't chat" qualify as an answer? :-)

Ditto to Drooler's reply, I hate IM's and refuse to use them. They are way too invasive. If someone needs to get a hold of me that badly, they have my phone number and can call me. And if I don't want to answer, that's what answering machines are for. Cell phones and IM suck.
