I don't know if this sheds any useful light on things, but I just tried and could download a single image by clicking the thumb and right-clicking, saving as ... That's in IE 7 with no download manager.
I agree it's a chore to pick through the images when there are so many and when some are similar. But it's probably a chore no matter how you approach it. And, IMHO, sometimes the subtle changes in facial expression or body language are interesting.
Too many images vs. too few images, I've finally decided that too many is the better of the two evils, because there's more choice and less missed, but of course that means more time tossing and/or more disk space being used. Oh, well ...

After doing some testing it appears the site has probelems with Firefox. If I download any images using IE or the IE Tab of Firefox, it'll download just fine. It's just I lose all my features that make downloading soo much easier in FF. And if I download the full zips, then it works fine too.
Webmaster has replied to my message board thread. So if if they figure something out, I'll add it to here.
