Monahan (0) It's tough to determine from a preview site and PU/TBP reviews frequently do not mention bit rates so if that were a really important factor in signing up, I would not be a mamber of many sites.

However, IF sites would promise a good bit rate and/or if PU/TBP reviews included that stat in the future it would be a very worthwhile addition.

Denner (0) Not too many sites offers that service - and, alas, some of them does not stick to the promiss...
BTW: This could be a usefull thread sharing experience concerning those sites who put out info about bit rates.

Drooler (Disabled) I don't really understand video bit rates. I've spent the last 20 minutes trying to Google myself out of ignorance ("video bit rate why important"), but all I've found are the technical things -- just half the story. The other half is about what the eye can see and the mind can process.

Sometimes in reviews I've mentioned them along with dimensions in case it might be helpful to a really video-savvy User.

I suppose they're analogous to jpegs. Over the years, I've developed some sense of quality "measure" with those. If, for example, 1600x1067 jpg is only 150K in size, it's probably been degraded too much, even if the model is in a simple white background. That is, it probably looks pretty dodgy full-size.

You know, it would be really helpful to have a "benchmark" table of video quality, meaning that given X and Y dimensions of the vid, and maybe its format (?), what's the minimally accepable bitrate for that?

Anyone know a link to such info?

It's good that you have mentioned them in reviews, but I think it goes over a lot of people's head. Quality can be a very subjective thing, and quantity -- even high quantity with low quality -- is much more objective, especially since it is often just numbers. But bit rate can really determine a video's quality, even if everyone is more concerned with the resolution or length.

Maybe there is just not enough demand by members for sites to post them, though once you download a file you can see for yourself. I worry too many sites will just use high bit rates to claim they have good videos, just like they do with HD resolutions. Just because they captured a shitty scene in HD does not keep it from being any less shitty had it been captured in SD. In fact, higher quality often only reinforces bad lightning, camera work, sound, style, etc.

pat362 (0) The question should have been How important is the bit rate in re-joining a site because I've never seen the info on bit rate anywhere on the preview sections of any site. I think most of us care about the quality of the material, the quickness in downloading and the size of the file.

TrashMan (Disabled) Kind of important. I'm more interested in good resolution choices first...

exotics4me (0) As my mother-in-law says, aye, aye, aye!

Most of my technical knowledge comes from my porn collection. Remember when they used to say the internet was invented for 2 things, education and porn? Killed two birds with my stone.

If I am on our powerful computer with the big monitor, the higher resolution and higher bitrate is very important. Try watching a 320 high end video clip in full screen on a 1920 resolution monitor.

I always looked at the bitrate as being similar to frame rate. The problem is, it runs in a ladder like progression. The higher the bitrate/resolution is, the more advanced computer you need to truly enjoy it, and the more hard drive space you need to store it.

I was blown away by the new Give Me Pink videos, those are 1920 high end, 8000+ bitrate, and the files are right at 2 GB each for a 30 minute video. On our powerful computer, the videos are crisp, as nice as I have seen, but if I put the video on our older laptop, it struggles with the fast bitrate and large resolution, I assume the RAM isn't high enough and the video card isn't powerful enough.

Going by that, I think the information from a site before joining could be useful since some people might not have a computer powerful enough to get full use of a 1920 and 8000 bitrate video. Then it would be nice for those that do, so they would be interested more since it would use their computer's power fully.

Personally, my favorite combination as far as quality, size, speed is the 960x540 resolution, around 4000 bitrate. Those files are 600-650 mb in size and are big enough in size and speed to be good enough quality without the 2 GB hit on the hard drive.

Check this link out, it is the wiki for DVD qualities including standard and HD and gives the resolutions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD

Just click on the linked "standard" in the article or "high definition" link to see the numbers.
