It's more important for rejoining, for the obvious reason that I've already used the search function and I know how well (or poorly) it works. And it's a secondary factor, content quality being primary, of course, but it still carries an "impetus" factor.
When I think about rejoining, remembering that the search engine makes it easy to catch up gives me that extra push to go ahead.
The "Galleria" sites -- ATK Galleria, ATK Exotics, and ATK Premium -- are the best I've seen in this way. When I end a subscription, I'd rather just make a record of the last date I viewed things instead of having to record in more detail the last model and gallery name or, in the Galleria case, something like "80amateurs2" and "80foot3." And the "Exotics" site is really hard to keep track of things on that way (too many categories!), but simply using the date makes it a snap.
I just go straight to the search engine, choose month and year, and then find where I left off in the month. And from there, the galleries open in new windows, so I don't lose track of where I am in catching up. It's a great feature of those sites.
BTW, TeenDreams used to have a BETTER search engine than the current one, but it's still far better than none at all.

I put that it's nice but not that important. I agree with Drooler that a good search function makes rejoins a lot easier. Most of the sites that I do rejoin have a simple and clear update schedule or good search that makes this easy. As you might expect, they tend to be the higher scoring sites (not that amazing that good quality porn and good site design and search seem to go hand in hand).
However, for most sites that I don't plan on going back to or rarely go back to, it's not that important. If I pick up a few duplicates so be it. I'd rather have the quality over the search capabilities.
It is frustrating that a lot of sites can't seem to figure out the search thing. It's pretty easy, put some hidden tags on a scene or set and enter it into the data base and put a date on the update. However, this takes work and too many sites, even decent ones, seem to skimp on this aspect.
Large sites that don't have good search like Teendreams get knocked a couple of points in my reviews for crappy search. For smaller sights, it doesn't really hurt their scoring for me.

Accuracy: My main (only?) beef with VideoBox is the inaccuracy of the search function caused by sloppiness and carelessness in identifying the models correctly or in misspelled names, When a sit has 6,000+ DVD's accuracy is critical to locating material by model name.
Accuracy and coverage: My main beef with Bank Brothers is that the search function (an overstatement is that they even have one) sucks big time. A large percentage of models are identified as "ehhh, I forgot." Many others are just first names. And the search result usually includes several totally unrelated hits. I'm canceling BB for that reason because there are so many other sites with great content and that provide much better search capabilities.
Coverage: FTV Girls is a high quality site but it has, essentially, no search function at all and is on my "next to go" list for that reason.
High scores to Twistys, SexyBabes.tv, Adult.com and to Naughty America for having superb search functions.
I suggested this poll because I was curious how others felt about this. If a search function is rated lousy in a review I usually move on without signing up, but if a good search function is operating on the preview site that I like and that has a good review, I'm likely to sign up.

That's a good point about the preview having the search function. It's a plus because it shows that the site is serious enough to allow visitors to examine the content and the quality of the engine -- UNLESS of course the engine turns out to be a clunker.
But it's a hellava big step in the right direction in either case compared to those sites that don't show visitors much at all and have this blinking-ass "Join Now!" thing going with all clicks linked directly to the signup page.
But I answered "for large sites" or whatever it was (not showing on this reply page). I'm with Wittyguy that smaller sites or ones that have good organization of content and show their updates in order with dates to the visitor don't really need to have a search engine.
BTW, I also think that EuropeanGlamourGirls has a nice enough search engine for its size, though the content is too often dull and repetitive.
BTW #2: What you said about accuracy is of course important! When they mispell names, etc., it's the old computer term GIGO -- garbage in, garbage out. Yeah, that just sucks.

The 2 main factors for joining a site are quality and quantity of the content. If they have both of these, then the search option is the one that will decide whether I rejoin that site.
I don't think there is anything less annoying then wasting a lot of time looking for specifc scenes
or just figuring how the search options work. That isn't an issue on smaller sites with little content, but that's a big problem with sites that have really large archives.

Search and browse features can really enhance a a site. Unfortunately you don't always get the sense of a site's search features until you join.
BTW, the most robust search engine in the world doesn't mean diddly unless the content is indexed properly.

On very large sites it's a must that there be a search function and it be accurate.
I hate it when I miss an scene that I would like because I couldn't find it.
