No not even a national phonecall. Or even as simple as an e-mail. If something goes wrong with my payment I take the loss and move on.
I guess I'm just too embarrased to talk about that sort of thing (with the exception of like-minded people ofcourse).

I seem to recall making a toll-free call once that might have been routed to a call center in India. I can't be absolutely certain about the geographical destination of the call, but it wouldn't be a surprise anymore. So I answered, "Other."
"Distance" is pretty much in its death throes these days, telecommunication-wise.

I had to call a toll free number to cancel my membership to one of Playboy's sites. It was a toll free number. I'm still baffled by the fact that I had to call them to cancel my membership.

Same here with cancelling Playboy, having to make that phone call. Somehow, I just don't like having to do that, being in a situation where I must speak with someone. The woman on the other end tried to soft-pedal keeping the subscription, but she didn't persist when I said that I only called to cancel and not to maintain the subscription even if they were offering a lower rate.
Seems to me that they are well-trained and qualified at what they do, as it wasn't the first time for me. Maybe the people in charge think that the toll-free number and speaking to a real person gives things a nice "personal touch."
But I'd still rather just quit using an online cancellation form. Speaking to that woman, even though she was very professional, I felt embarrassed, like there was this unspoken dimension to the conversation that went something like, "You must be a lecherous sleazeball."
"I must confess that it is true."

I'm not sure why they require their online customers to contact them directly. I somehow feel that they do it because some people will feel too embarassed and therefore keep the membership open instead of speaking to a person. In any case, I still wasted a certain amount of time trying to find an online method of cacelling the memberhip.

Went through the same thing trying to cancel without calling. And you may well be right about the embarrassment factor.
And the "your call will be answered by the next available representative" factor.

Never an international phone call but I have had to call for customer service on an 800 number before. It's a tad embarassing until you think about it and realize the poor shmo on the other end is doing this all day long. I hate the phone call stuff and you figure it has to cost the website money but it might be enough of a deterence that causes lots of people to keep their memberships.

No.
At most a national call to my credit card company, but that was unrelated to porn. If I have had a customer service problem with a site I use e-mail and never even thought of actually calling them.
Canceling an online service provider however(always had to do it over the phone)...holy fuck, worst calls in the world. The assholes on the other end should be working at suicide hot lines--you would die of old age before they let you go.
