Cropped thumbnails are pretty annoying as they're always indiscriminately cropped, often meaning you have to guess what's what's missing.

Don't know if this has been addressed, but I've always favored the photo starting out small but comfortably viewable ....with the option of a single click, to bring it up to large.

I hate it when I see the thumbnail showing the subject filling the space, but then the actual photo has her dwarfed by a tree or a wall or something like that.
WYSIWYG ("What you see is what you get") is the best policy, besides being an avenue to self-awareness.

yeah ive noticed this some places too, where the head is missing on a thumbnail...

I'm so used to cropped images, I've gotten very good at picking the great shots with a limiting thumb.
I've grown to like the cropped images because it provides constant surprises, a key element in arousal.
