It used to be that you weren't supposed to ever leave your externals plugged in for any longer than you needed them. It seems to me that now the reverse is true; do they even sell externals today that can't be left plugged in almost all the time. The only reason I don't with mine is due to space limits and all the damn cords.

The usual disk externals are best removed unless being used. The new solid state externals, however, are built with the intention of very long connection times.
The best test...if your external is hot after being plugged in for a period, best to remove it and let it cool down.

My externals are powered down but connected, a flip of a switch and they power up and reconnect so they are both connected but off when not in use. I make sure all my externals have can power off via switch safely. Used to leave them on burned up a HD that was hardly used maybe was coincidence but I stopped leaving them on after it burned one.

While three of my four sit unconnected, the fourth is always connected to my TV unless I'm loading it with new content.
