either way it's still open season for hackers and regardless of choice, if they want they will get it.

Passwords are basically obsolete today when it comes to security. If someone wants in, they'll get in if all you're relying on is password protection. As long as you're not using "123456" you might as well pick your own.

It doesn't really matter to me. I never bother memorizing them, so they can be as cryptic as alphabet soup in a wind storm.

Ditto Drooler's reply.
I will further say, seems a site's assigned password does come with less complications.

My problem is with websites that change your password without notice then wait for you to report that you can't sign in.
At least 3 examples:
21Sextury.com (happened frequently, sometimes more than once a day. The worst.)
Scoreland.com (and sister sites) (happens once or twice a month, aldo with no notification.)
VideoBox.com (Happens frequently but they make it very easy to reset your password in a matter of seconds.)
I really don't care if the site creates the P/W for me because I maintain a log of passwords manually and off line.

Prefer the option of picking my own, especially if the membership goes on for a while--and this should be true of any site requiring a password.
If you're allowed to pick your own password (using a password generator) that's longer and more complicated, then the site's isn't necessarily more secure.
