I prefer restarting the old thread. That way the folks who posted to the old one and who stayed subscribed will be notified that the thread is back in business. That will, in turn, result in possible updates.
I see no benefit in intentionally starting a new thread when an old one is still there.

I do enjoy some subjects and I do not even notice how old the thread is. Honestly I would just like more discussion all around regardless of date lol

I say the old thread because otherwise (if it's something I've already commented on) I feel like I'm just repeating myself or else I ignore the newly revisited topic. Creating lots of new threads is good for drumming up immediate new interest but gets old if you're a regular.

Every new thread is new for a much shorter time than it is old -- or dead, as the question goes. It's more consistent to pick up the same topic on an existing thread.
Sure, it takes work to find that old/dead/resting-in-peace thread, but I think it's worth the effort. Once revived, the "zombie" thread will once again raise its withering head on the home page.
So just mix equal parts golden rum, white rum, dark rum, apricot brandy, pineapple juice, lime juice and 1/2 part 150-proof rum, take a sip, and start searching.
