^ Strangely enough most of the female stars of yesteryear you mentioned were never of great appeal to me, even though many of them were my contemporaries, especially all the so-called sex goddesses like Brigitte Bardot or Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield. I named a couple of bygone stars but I must confess that I never thought of them in a sexual way. I don't know if it's the same with you. I appreciated their beauty but it was their performances and roles that attracted me. Is it possible that those stars of yesterday although marketed as sex symbols were not marketed as sexual symbols. By that I mean that you thought them hot looking and you would love to meet them but having sex with them wasn't necessarily the primary object. I think that most of the stars of today are marketed first as fuck objects and secondly as a sex symbol. I'd even be willing to say that the fact that they are conidered a sex symbol has less to do with the image they are suppose to project and more to do with the way some perceive them. Certainly most of the movies made today and many of those done in the last 40 years tend to promote these stars as sexual people. In the days of studios. A star was something to be admired but like their name sake. They were not reachable by mere mortals. I was thinking last night how wonderful it would be if the mainstream producers and distributors were able to give us high production value, regular movies with overt sex left in, if the story calls for it. No, I am not talking NC-17, because even in those movies great care is taken to hint at sex rather than show it. Be it thrillers, sci-fi, dramas, comedies. Just have a good story with the sexual element left in, be it five minutes or a bit more or maybe even less, depending, It would be so much more erotic than a flimsy story that invariably leads to 22 minutes of sex within five minutes, as is the case with most "adult" movies. One could always use body doubles if the stars refused to do a scene like that. A truly ADULT high quality movie shown at the Cineplex ... what a dream! Darn those censors. I've never really been into wishing anyone was a porn star. I must confess that I have never been to an adult theater. Maybe the city I lived in in Canada was too small, or maybe they were not allowed in Canada .. I really don't know. Pat might be able to clue me in on that with his huge knowledge base. In this case I was thinking of real, main stream theaters presenting life as it is in the movies they show. No "Deep Throat" or "Debbie Does Dallas" .. simply ordinary, every day movies with a good story, with censorship a thing of the past when it comes to the sex scenes. I'm pretty sure the term "smellorama" comes from an idea studios had in the 50's and/or 60's to add smell to some theaters so that it would immersed the viewer a little more in the movie if let's say during a fire scene. You would smell burning wood or something like that. The idea isn't a bad one per say but I don't think it went beyond the gimmick phase. I'm pretty sure jberry is talking about the accumulated smell of men's ejaculate in a theater. The musky scent usually get's mixed with whatever VOC the theater uses to hide that smell. If you have ever been in a porn shop where they have viewing booths then you will know what the smell is like. I think that as much as your idea is a good one in regards to a mainstream producer making a softcore to midcore movie or even a great movie with a mix of softcore to hardcotre scenes. Any movie that can get men and women sexually stimulated will invariably lead to some of them masturbating and climaxing and you wind up with the liquid leftover in the theater. That pretty much means the same thing that happened in adult theaters back in the day. I'd like to add that Paul Verheoven has already shot a movie that comes close to what you're looking for and he did 17 years ago. If you've never seen Showgirls then you must definetely take the time. Many critics at the time gave the movie a bad review and I belive it still holds the most Razzies of all time but there's an interesting take on the movie's wikipedia page (see link) in regards to the movie. Hollywood is about one thing and one thing only...Money. Sooner or later the studios will do midcore to hardcore film's with well knows established stars. Of course I don't think any of those movies will see the inside of a theater but that just means lower cost to the studio anyway. I wouldn't be srprised to see James Franco do something naughty in the near futur. He is doing a film about Kink and I saw a pic of him with Princess Donna on his lap. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

^ Thanks, Pat. I knew you would come through with some excellent information! Today's dream: I click on Netflix and find "Showgirls!!" Yeah, right. That's my one beef with that service, not enough truly adult material. Not porn but adult! And if the critics disliked "Showgirls" then it would most likely be right up my alley. There are hardcore movies directed by mainstream directors out there. Not very many, but they exist. The problem is two-fold. The first is that generally speaking, they have to use unknown actors because very few "name" actors are willing to unsimulated sex on camera (Chloe Sevigny did an unsimulated blow job for a movie called Brown Bunny, but I can't think of that many others). The second is that because of the explicit nature, they don't have any place to show it besides film festivals. Theaters won't show it, most places that sell DVDs won't stock it, so there's not many ways to sell the movie, so there aren't many ways for the people that made it to make their money back. If you want to see a couple, check out 9 Songs by Michael Winterbottom and Shortbus by John Cameron Mitchell (fair warning: There's gay as well as straight sex in that movie). And I hear that Lars Von Trier is about to make a movie like that as well, but I don't know if it has actually gone into production yet. | |

Thanks for the two names above, hodayathink. I must look them up. And you are absolutely right in your observations when it comes to selling a movie like the one I crave to see. That's why I call it the impossible dream: to see a non-sex-centered, story driven movie, except that the sex is left in ... IF the context calls for it. | |

There's also a few porn movies that have gotten rave reviews in the past couple years for the story and acting in them. They're probably a bit more sex-centered than you're looking for, but you might find them pretty close to your ideal as well. Wasteland and Portrait of a Call Girl by Elegant Angel are probably the two most acclaimed ones. Both are available from the Elegant Angel website and on many VOD sites, if you want to check those out as well. | |
