As a site owner I don't feel it's my place to join in with this discussion, but I just had to post to say this is an AMAZING thread. I don't think I've ever heard so much sense on one subject in one place. It's refreshing to hear and has cheered me up. Thanks for proving there are a large number of sensible, reasoned people still out there who value quality, consistency and honesty. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I'd say that the fact that you are a webmaster makes you the ideal person to answer this question since illegal dowmloading may affect your ability to produce porn for those of us that pay for it. Long live the Brown Coats.

To be honest I do a mixture of both, I am a member of a number of forums, and even frequent many free direct download blogs (yes there are plenty of blogs where you can get really good stuff). (I don't generally use tube sites as the quality is degraded.)

Then there are a few sites I can't seem to do without simply because they have an angle that no one else does and so it makes it hard to find stuff for free on them anyway.

THIS CAN'T BE STRESSED ENOUGH. Often sites like brazzers aren't ripped off directly, but they produce such mainstream stuff that people don't actually need to. You can see the same girls doing the same things in so many other scenes it ain't even funny. This forces sites like this to compete primarily on the basis of quality (you can't find the full brazzers 1080p HD for free everywhere), and volume (sites like brazzers have such large back catalogs).

Even then price is ALWAYS an issue and for me a site with a good discount or loyalty program usually keeps me a member long term. If a site is great, unique and everything I want, but also expensive with no incentive for staying, I may just stop by for a month, download what I can, and move on.

For instance here is a list of three sites I have currently what I am paying for them and why:

Scoreland ($19.99) worth the price by itself, but would have only been there for a month if not for the loyalty program. Score's loyalty program gives you an extra site for free every month you stay a member. Since they have a number of very quality sites I may never cancel. (been a member 7 months now).

Brazzers ($9.99) Yea I took advantage of the loyalty discount a long time ago and haven't relinquished it. (I think it's still available) To be honest you can find a ton of Brazzers scenes all over the internet for free, and really I'm not even that big a fan of the content. I mean it's good enough, but I wouldn't be a member at $24.95 a month for it.

BangBros and Reality Kings (both $9.99) I also managed to find two old links for both Bangbros and Reality Kings at $9.99 a month as well (just googled them). Ditto everything I said about Brazzers. Low price can forgive a lot of transgressions.

Foot Fetish Daily ($50.00 3 months) Fairly expensive (so I took the multiple month deal) but just too good to pass up imo. There are other foot fetish sites, but not that many good ones and FFD is unique in the way it is presented and the types of girls it uses. Also because of the niche it is not very easy to find content for free from this site. Even still, due to the higher price I often take a number of months off it.

Other examples include 21Sextury.com (high quality, unique content, loyalty program), Shemale Club (it's very hard to find high quality Tranny stuff for free),and 50plusmilfs.com, which seems to have become something a suprise hit for Score, mainly because it is near IMPOSSIBLE to find mature (not milf I mean gilf) North American (most gilf type sites are european) boy/girl anywhere else on the net.

So that's it, in a nutshell if a site owner want's a loyal base of PAYING customers they need to have quality UNIQUE content (mainstream porn is easy too rip off), and come with some type of value in terms of price like a discount, or loyalty program. Edited on Mar 14, 2010, 08:34pm

Ditto what malikstarts said.

I stay with sites that have a loyalty deal that makes sense. $10 a month for Brazzers costs me less than the price of 2 Big Macs and is healthier.

And because I want to keep my own copies of the good stuff, the process of grabbing material from the "free" sites is cumbersome and, worse, who knows what kind of bad stuff like viruses will I be plagued with when I do that.

The online porn biz has matured to the point that those with lousy business practices get weeded out fast by the marketplace and the good sites with good content will continue to attract an audience if the pricing is fair and the customer service is good.

Monahan,

Kind of funny that you mentioned Brazzers in the same post as a statement about sites with lousy business practices getting weeded out, as this site seems to be one that gets many complaints.

I do think sites like PU do help force the "iffy" sites to change their business practices, as soon as such practices become known.

I think the main thing is that if the site has content people are interested in, they will likely join. And I think Brazzers is very much helped by bit torrent as there seems to be a shitload of their content available - if a guy downloads one of their videos for free and likes it, I'm sure he may consider joining the next time he is in search of material.

I for one, tend to join sites because I am lazy. I don't feel like spending time sorting through all kinds of crap to find stuff that is good, which is why I heavily favor sites with good navigation. Time is money! Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.
Brandt: Ah hahahahaha! Wonderful woman. We're all, we're all very fond of her. Very free-spirited.

I pay now because I have money... long ago I was poor and $14.95 per month for premium usenet access and unlimited illegal porn was cheaper than say subscribing to one porn site for a month. Also, I've NEVER had credit card billing issues with usenetserver or giganews; NEVER had to worry about prechecked cross-selling boxes; NEVER had to worry about some credit card charging company based in CYPRUS (WHERE THE F IS THAT???) or some other god forsaken country trying to rip me off. So back then I not only felt like I was saving money, but I also felt like I was SAFER to boot!

Anyways, now that I have money but have limited time, I am buying my stash because looking through newsgroups everyday looking for stuff is too time consuming. Also, I couldn't find everything I wanted (like Kat Young's VOD DVDs). With newsgroups you basically take what is there, and nowadays they use identifiers for titles and you have to go to some forum or news indexing site to see what those identifiers mean. It's a pain in the ass. You also have to filter out a lot of spam.

There's a lot more I could rant about but hell with it :D.

What an interesting thread to read.

Some great points on there that I had never considered, a real eye opener.

The quantity of free material available was my biggest concern regarding investing the huge amount of time and money that it has taken to get my site off the ground.

Very reassuring that if the content, price and quality is right people are still very willing to pay.

Stick to niche, give good quality & quantity.
Price it competitively.

Should be good to go. ;0)

The price is where many sites get in trouble. You should not charge too little but if you charge too much then no matter the content. Only a small quantity of people will want to join or be able to join.
My rule of thumb is that 15 to 20$ is a generous price to offer for starting sites because you allow a much larger group of people to get access and they then tell other people and so on. The 20 to 30$ should be reserved for more established sites because their content is usually much larger and since they are still in business then that means they were doing something right. The moment you start charging above 30 then you start to get into a limited amount of traffic. The higher above the 30$ then the smaller your customer base gets. I sometimes join sites that are above 30$, but I don't stick with them and may not return for a year or more, and in some cases will never return.

Now there are many sites that used to charge more but have recently dropped their price. I can think of Kink and 21Sextury as 2 good examples. I don't know if it's temporary because of the issues facing porn or if it's a change in their business practice but these prices make it hard not to join. Long live the Brown Coats.

Full sets of photos and full length videos of what I want to see, when I want to see it without having to trawl the net. Also, paying for it keeps it going in the quality that I want. If no one paid, then there would be no point in making it and therefore no new porn.

Larss,

Having taken the time to reflect, I can see that although all of the negativity was not strictly necessary, I should maybe have lurked a little before launching into my first review. The negativity seems to have sparked off some healthy debate as well, which can't be a bad thing. I seem to have found some like minded people here, and will try to contribute as best I can. Probably won't be too much in the way of reviews, as I do not join sites very often, but I am happy to contribute to the forum when I think I have something to add.

The number of reviews is not as imporatnt as the quality or the rarity of the review. You will notice that some sites have many reviews while others have maybe only one.
If your review allows a site to be discovered by other members then that is a good thing. If your review allows other PU members to avoid joining a really crappy site then that is even better.

I'm always glad when we get new participating members at PU. Welcome and keep posting. Long live the Brown Coats.

I pay for porn because I used to drive 90km/h to a adult video store where I was a member and rented and taped various porn titles which became very expensive considering the money for gas etc. Since I am paying for a high speed internet service and the vast amount of porn sites available on the net its cheaper for me to join a site and get what I want (maybe). I tend to enjoy anal sites and teen anal sites, but I'm also in the porn from the 80's and 90's which is difficult to find and the quality is questionable. I've been looking for 3 particular actors for over 6 months and made a post about it in this site.I have had no luck other than some site which SELL DVD's of my actors, I am not going to buy porn dvd's and will continue to look for these three actors, tammi Ann,Chrissy Ann and Marilyn Chambers. As with everything else you gets what you pays for and its definitely buyer beware out there. I joined Videobox 3 times now and am currently trying AnalteenAngels and have joined porncom which isn't meeting my expatitions so I'll probably cancel the membership and wait a couple of months and return to videobox,of course check in here for whatever reviews are there. The European porn scene would be ideal but the sites are expensive and limited in quantity of new and exclusive material so I have been steering clear of these sites. To sum it all up I pay for porn because its easier than driving to a place and having to drive back to return the damn dvd. By the way what ever happened to DeluxePass? Its still shown on the net but everytime I have tried to access the site my browser says Done and I can't get into the site. Robin68

Yeah, a lot of young people don't know what it was like searching for porn back in the old days pre-WWW and how cheap it is now (relatively speaking). You had to buy videos or shitty magazines that cost $5 or so for just a few shoots of ~10-15 photos on paper that degraded over a few years.

Ha ha ha I remember searching for internet porn way back around 1993 (since porn does get the crack at any new technology, including the WWW) or so using DOS and downloading 16 bpp (4-color) pictures on those shitty modems. You could see the pixels load on the screen one-by-one and line-by-line and when it was all said and done you could say, "Oh, I think I see a boob!"
