An adaptation of that afterword was published Sunday night by The Atlantic, and, as one might expect, it isn’t so kind to President Trump and the Republicans enabling him. In the essay, Clinton writes of a “democracy in crisis,” outlining the ways she believes the Trump administration is threatening America’s system of government while describing the best means for Americans to combat his authoritarian tendencies. “In the roughly 21 months since he took the oath of office, Trump has sunk far below the already-low bar he set for himself in his ugly campaign,” she writes before referencing the border crisis, the administration’s response to Hurricane Maria and Trump’s repeated denial of Russian influence in the 2016 election. “I don’t use the word crisis lightly,” she continues. “There are no tanks in the streets. The administration’s malevolence may be constrained on some fronts — for now — by its incompetence. But our democratic institutions and traditions are under siege. We need to do everything we can to fight back. There’s not a moment to lose.” The former senator, secretary of state and presidential candidate elaborated by dividing Trump’s assault on democracy into five categories: his disrespect for the rule of law, the threats on the legitimacy of elections, his war on truth and reason, his rampant corruption and the way he had undermined national unity. “No one likes to be torn apart in the press — I certainly don’t — but when you’re a public official, it comes with the job,” she writes of his war on truth. “You get criticized a lot. You learn to take it. You push back and make your case, but you don’t fight back by abusing your power or denigrating the entire enterprise of a free press.” The essay is peppered with references to the early stages of American history, with Clinton quoting Abraham Lincoln and a host of other national leaders. She writes about how John Adams defined a republic as “a government of laws, and not of men,” and that Trump violates the Founding Fathers belief that a leader who does not respect the law is a tyrant. When Thomas Jefferson lost to Adams in the contentious 1800 president election, Clinton notes, he preached unity, not division in his concession speech. A quarter century earlier, he wrote in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal and “endowed by their Creator with the same inalienable rights,” a belief to which Trump clearly does not subscribe. Clinton points out his denial of the death toll in Puerto Rico, his antipathy toward NFL players protesting police brutality and his “very fine people” comment regarding the white nationalists marching in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. “None of this is a mark of authenticity or a refreshing break from political correctness,” she writes regarding Trump’s racist comments. “Hate speech isn’t ‘telling it like it is.’ It’s just hate.” | |

Dianne Feinstein made the letter she received from the accuser public on Sunday, followed by the accuser herself coming forward. However, Donald Trump Jr. seems to think it’s all a big joke, according to a meme posted to his Instagram. CNN published a redacted version of the letter sent to Feinstein in late July, detailing Kavanaugh’s alleged attempted rape of his 15-year-old high school peer, Christine Blasey Ford, when Kavanaugh was 17. Then President Trump’s son shared his interpretation of the letter. Alongside a meme seemingly mocking the content of the letter, Trump Jr. wrote a caption insulting the Democratic senator for exposing it. He has since been called “a repulsive human” by an Instagram user commenting on his post. “Oh boy… the Dems and their usual nonsense games really have him on the ropes now,” Trump Jr. wrote. “Finestein [sic] had the letter in July and saved it for the eve of his vote… honorable as always.” Many have shared their harsh criticism of the father of five for posting laughing emoji and making a joke out of the serious situation. “This is absolutely abhorrent,” one Instagram user wrote. “I can only imagine what deficiencies in your own character and intelligence would contribute to your posting something like this.” This was followed by another who wrote, “You have daughters? Shame on you. You are disgusting.” Referring to the letter in the Trump post, which says “Will you be my girlfriend?” in a child’s handwriting, one Instagram user commented: “So you’ve learned to equate a person forcing another one in a bed, holding her down and trying to get her clothes off as a simple way for him to say he likes her?! You learned well from your dad.” Another Instagram user went so far as to write a longer comment about the more widespread impact that a post like this can make: “This isn’t a commentary on Kavenaugh [sic] and his accuser, this is a complete lack of empathy on behalf DJ Jr. Even worse it’s posted one photo after a post with his beautiful daughter. I understand your father/role model has worked his way through several wives, but as a father to a young woman I’d hoped you could at least understand how you’d feel if it were your daughter in this situation and find a way to at least show some compassion and restraint. This is a careless and unnecessarily caustic post from someone in such a fortunate public position.” One day later, the post remains on Trump Jr.’s Instagram page, without even an edit to the apparently blatant misspelling of Feinstein’s name. The extraordinary move, which the President said he ordered for “reasons of transparency,” comes in response to repeated calls for declassification from his congressional allies who claim, with scant evidence, that the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election was plagued by an anti-Trump bias. Brett Kavanaugh denies he ever tried to rape a woman. But 200 women who attended the high school of Kavanaugh-accuser Christine Blasey Ford have signed a letter saying they believe Ford's accusations. So how can a man be confirmed for the Supreme Court, when so many women believe he tried to rape a young girl? Because the Senate is controlled by Republicans, the party that stands for supporting women as the bearers of our future children. As bearers, they deserve respect, but if they complain about getting raped, well, that's just a man doing a man's job, trying to have a good time. Senators, even female Senators, want to give candidates the benefit of the doubt. So if 200 women sign a petition saying a female was forced against her will in a sexual situation, so what? That's not evidence. What is evidence is that 60 other women signed a letter stating that Brett Kavanaugh is a really good guy. (That letter seems to ignore that Kavanaugh would sometimes get very drunk as a teenager, and try to pickup girls, because that's what teenage boys did back then. And if Kavanaugh got a little rough, so what, he was always respectful of women. So he couldn't have tried to rape a 15-year-old girl, because that's not the Kavanaugh we all know and respect and love. And Trump says Kavanaugh is a really swell guy, who would make a wonderful Supreme Court Justice. So there you have it. Vote for Kavanaugh, for Justice of the Supreme Court. Especially if Kavanaugh apologizes to Ford, saying that he didn't try to rape her, but was only fooling around, as boys do, and she took it the wrong way with all this complaining. If she was a man, he'd tell her to grow up and take responsiblilty for her own actions. Because she's trying to fuck him up, but he's too much a gentleman to fuck her back. Christine Blasey Ford said Monday that she was willing to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee, after coming forward on Sunday as the author of a confidential letter sent in late July to two members of Congress. That testimony was expected to take place next Monday. But on Tuesday, Blasey, a psychology professor in Northern California, said through her lawyers that an investigation should be “the first step” before she is put “on national television to relive this traumatic and harrowing incident.” Blasey’s lawyers released a letter to committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), CNN reported, calling for an investigation to “ensure the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a non-partisan manner and that the committee is fully informed before conducting any hearing or making any decision.” Speaking with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday, attorney Lisa Banks reiterated that Blasey, her client, was “prepared to cooperate with the committee and with any law enforcement investigation.” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) tweeted her support for Blasey’s decision on Tuesday, saying, “She should not be bullied into participating in a biased process.” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who was first to acknowledge the existence of a letter containing the allegations against Kavanaugh last week, also issued a statement of support for Blasey’s decision. “I agree with her 100 percent that the rushed process to hold a hearing on Monday has been unfair and is reminiscent of the treatment of Anita Hill,” Feinstein said in the statement, referencing the law professor’s 1991 allegations of sexual harassment against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. “I also agree that we need the facts before senators — not staff or lawyers — speak to witnesses. Trump says he doesn't think the FBI should investigate Kavanaugh. Isn't that what the FBI is supposed to do: investigate the backgrounds of nominees? If new information is revealed, the FBI is supposed to ignore it? Trump wants complete transparency. But he is saying he wants Kavanaugh and his accuser to speak, without involving the FBI. Why not use the FBI? Because the FBI is corrupt, and not to be trusted? Or because the FBI might interview potential witnesses, and find evidence that Kavanaugh got drunk one time at a party and tried to rape a girl? The latest is that Kavanaugh not only denies trying to rape this girl, he now denies he was at the party where the alleged rape happened. Can the truth be established, by listening to the two people speak? One says Kavanaugh tried to rape her. Kavanaugh says he never tried to rape her. But now Kavanaugh says he was never at the party. If the girl is able to remember some of the people at the party, the FBI or other law enforcement can get official testimony from those people if they remember Kavanaugh at the party. Then, if they remember Kavanaugh at the party, Kavanaugh can explain that either he had a lapse of memory, or that the memories of the witnesses is faulty, or some other reason, why people would testify that Kavanaugh was at a party, that he denies being at. But Trump, and Kavanaugh, are betting that they can push through the nomination, without a full investigation of the woman's complaint. Trump is an expert at denial. And at lies. Is Kavanaugh the same way? Kavanaugh probably doesn't lie as much as Trump. And then they will vote, they will look at his career, they will look at what she had to say from 36 years ago, and we will see what happens." Democrats have insisted that, before any public hearing with the nominee and his accuser, the FBI should look into an allegation made by professor Christine Blasey Ford, 51, that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were both in high school decades ago in suburban Maryland. As Mother Jones points out, a book by Judge mentions Kavanaugh and his apparent love of binge-drinking while at the school. And in an April 2014 speech to the Yale Law School Federalist Society, Kavanaugh relayed his drinking adventures with friends. Of course, many young people drink before they’re 21. But sexual aggression is not a rite of passage for boys, and the allegations against Kavanaugh are far more disturbing than simply a young person who drank alcohol during high school. The Trump administration announced last month that it plans to launch Space Force by 2020. Congressional approval will first be required, however. “The President has clearly communicated his desire for a military department for space,” Wilson wrote in the new Air Force memo, per AP. “Strategic competition with Russia and China is the focus of our approach.” According to the memo, the plan would be to create a headquarters for the new Space Force by 2020 and have it fully operational by the following year. Accompanied by a bellhop, they returned to the room. “We saw that the piece was still there,” Whiteley told Yahoo Lifestyle. “I grabbed it off the wall; the bellhop sees that I’m taking it off the wall, and he calls security.” Whiteley explained to security that the painting was his artwork, by showing his ID and his signature on the back of the portrait. “After a 20-minute grill session, they looked over the room to see if we were trying to steal stuff from the hotel. While it may seem that the cleaners on the hotel staff and guests are not very observant, Whiteley has another theory. (SAUL LOEB via Getty Images) WASHINGTON ― Republican strategists charged with keeping control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections are dreading the possibility of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which the all-male GOP members of the panel question a woman alleging sexual assault. The hearing, which would feature testimony from both Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the psychology professor who has accused him of attempting to rape her when both of them were high school students, could take place next Monday. Republican lawmakers and conservative media figures, who have largely lined up in support of Kavanaugh, have already begun trying to poke holes in her story and question her credibility. “The problem is, Dr. Ford can’t remember when it was, where it was, or how it came to be,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the Senate majority whip and a member of the Judiciary Committee. “There are some gaps there that need to be filled.” “There’s some question whether she’s mixed up,” Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), another Judiciary Committee member, said this Monday. “I think there are lots of reasons not to believe it, but on the other hand, you can’t ignore and cast the issue aside.” Republicans fear that the spectacle of male senators aggressively questioning Blasey would alienate female voters, who already favor Democrats by a wide margin in polling. College-educated women are considered key to Democratic hopes of taking back the House. GOP operatives worry that a replay of the Anita Hill hearings ― when an all-male panel of senators aggressively questioned the integrity of another woman accusing a Supreme Court nominee of sexual misconduct ― could provide those voters in particular with yet another reason to support Democrats in November. One GOP strategist, granted anonymity to discuss his party’s position in this fracas, was blunt: “The optics could not be much worse. It’s not what we need right now.” “Let’s see,” a second Republican strategist wrote in an email. “Eleven old white guys questioning a woman about teenage sex, what could go wrong? Hopefully someone will suggest hiring a female prosecutor to handle the questioning, it’s really our only hope of coming out of this thing alive.” Indeed, Republicans on the Judiciary Committee are considering using female staffers to question Blasey. A CNN/SSRS poll conducted earlier this month found Democrats with an edge of 52 percent to 42 percent over Republicans on the generic ballot for Congress. That edge comes entirely from female voters, who back Democrats by a margin of 60 percent to 36 percent. Men support Republicans, 49 percent to 44 percent. The Hill hearings are credited, in part, with sparking the “Year of the Women” election back in 1992. This year, Democrats have recruited and nominated a record number of female House candidates, including in a number of states crucial to control of the Senate. A third GOP strategist was hopeful that any electoral damage could be limited to the House, where many battleground districts are filled with college-educated women. In crucial Senate states ― which are mostly in territory friendly to President Donald Trump ― the fight could actually help Republicans by drawing attention to the Supreme Court and firing up the party’s base, he argued. “The worst thing for House Republicans is a conversation about anything other than the economy,” the strategist said. “Even though House Republicans have less than zero to do with Supreme Court confirmations, they’re going to bear the brunt.” Others suggested that Trump has already throughly damaged the party’s brand with suburban women, so next Monday’s proposed hearing couldn’t do much additional damage. One strategist was hopeful the GOP could survive the hearing, provided senators avoided direct confrontations with Blasey and simply allowed her to testify. “I don’t think they have to question her at all,” the strategist said. “I don’t think there’s anything to gain by interrogating her like a criminal detective.” The strategist thought the committee’s Republican senators ― a roster including Cornyn, Hatch, Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Chuck Grassley (Iowa) ― were likely to behave themselves. “If this was in the House, I’d have no confidence,” the strategist added. Cornyn appeared to share that sentiment about his colleagues. “No problem,” he said when reporters asked if he was confident the hearing wouldn’t go off the rails. The N.C. Department of Agriculture issued the livestock mortality totals Tuesday, as major flooding is continuing after the slow-moving storm's drenching rains. Sixteen North Carolina rivers were at major flood stage Tuesday, with an additional three forecasted to peak by Thursday. The Department of Environmental Quality said the earthen dam at one hog lagoon in Duplin County had breached, spilling its contents. Another 25 of the pits containing animal feces and urine have either suffered structural damage, had wastewater levels go over their tops from heavy rains or had been swamped by floodwaters. Large mounds of manure are also typically stored at poultry farms. North Carolina is among the top states in the nation in producing pork and poultry, with about 9 million hogs at any given time and 819 million chickens and 34 million turkeys raised each year. The N.C. Pork Council, an industry trade group, said the livestock losses from the storm should be taken in the context. "Our farmers took extraordinary measures in advance of this storm, including moving thousands of animals out of harm's way as the hurricane approached," the group said in a statement issued Tuesday. "We believe deeply in our commitment to provide care for our animals amid these incredibly challenging circumstances." The industry lost about 2,800 hogs during flooding from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Sanderson Farms, a major poultry producer in the state, said it lost about 1.7 million chickens after flooding at more than 60 of the independent farms that supply its poultry processing plants. The company said its facilities suffered no major damage, but supply disruptions and flooded roadways had caused shutdowns at some plants. In addition, about 30 farms near Lumberton have been isolated by flood waters, hampering the delivery of feed to animals. The lack of food could cause additional birds to die if access isn't restored quickly, the company said. Smithfield Foods, the world's largest pork producer, said its plants also suffered no significant damage and are operating at limited capacity. The company said it would ramp up production as roads become passable. An environmental threat is also posed by human waste as low-lying municipal sewage plants flood. On Sunday, the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority reported that more than 5 million gallons of partially treated sewage had spilled into the Cape Fear River after power failed at its treatment plant. The Environmental Protection Agency said Monday that 16 community water treatment facilities in North Carolina are unable to supply drinking water and that seven publicly owned sewage treatment works are non-operational due to the flooding. Duke Energy is continuing cleanup operations Tuesday following a weekend breach at a coal ash landfill at its L.V. Sutton Power Station near Wilmington. Duke spokeswoman Paige Sheehan said a full assessment of how much ash escaped from the waterlogged landfill is ongoing. The company initially estimated Saturday that about 2,000 cubic yards (1,530 cubic meters) of ash were displaced, enough to fill about 180 dump trucks. The coal-fired Sutton plant was retired in 2013 and replaced with a new facility that burns natural gas. The company has been excavating millions of tons of leftover ash from old pits there and removing the waste to a new lined landfill constructed on the property. The gray ash left behind when coal is burned contains toxic heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and mercury. Photos from the site provided to AP by Cape Fear River Watch, an environmental advocacy group, show cascades of gray-colored water spilling from at least two breaches at the landfill and flowing toward Sutton Lake, the plant's former cooling pond which is now used for public recreation, including fishing and boating. Sutton Lake drains into the Cape Fear River. Sheehan said Duke's assessment is that there was minimal chance any contaminants from the spill had reached the river. At a different power plant near Goldsboro, three old coal ash dumps capped with soil were inundated by the Neuse River. Duke said they had no indication those dumps at the H.F. Lee Power Plant were leaking ash into the river. Duke's handling of ash waste has faced intense scrutiny since a drainage pipe collapsed under a waste pit at an old plant in Eden in 2014, triggering a massive spill that coated 70 miles (110 kilometers) of the Dan River in gray sludge. The utility later agreed to plead guilty to nine Clean Water Act violations and pay $102 million in fines and restitution for illegally discharging pollution from ash dumps at five North Carolina power plants. It plans to close all its ash dumps by 2029. In South Carolina, workers with electricity provider Santee Cooper erected a temporary dike in hopes of preventing flooding of an old coal ash dump at the demolished Grainger Generating Station near Conway. The dump is adjacent to the Waccamaw River, which is expected to crest at nearly 20 feet (6 meters) this weekend. In August 2011, for instance: “Barack Obama played golf yesterday. Now he heads to a 10-day vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. Nice work ethic.” In December 2013: “Ebola outbreak, with people flying in from all over the country, but decided to play golf!” In October 2014: “Can you believe that with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf.” Well. There was no way Trump would ever do anything like that. One month into his candidacy, in July 2015 — and please don’t puke your coffee while reading this — he solemnly promised: “I would rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done. I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president who takes time off.” And this, from a Trump gig on “60 Minutes”: “There’s just so much to be done, so I don’t think we’ll be very big on vacations.” And get this, from August 2016: “I’m going to be working for you. I’m not going to have time to go play golf.” It was hilarious, on Bill Maher’s show Friday night, to hear religious-right leader Ralph Reed praise Trump as a man of honor who “keeps his word.” Reed pointed out that Trump had kept his word on naming a conservative to the Supreme Court — which is all Reed cares about, because he had nothing else to say about a guy whose veracity is nil and whose word has the value of soiled tissue. The golf thing is Exhibit A. The golf thing matters only because Trump pledged not to golf like Obama did. The latest stats: From January to August 2009, Obama’s first seven months in office, he spent all or part of 15 days at leisure. From January to August 2017, Trump’s first seven months in office, he spent all or part of 53 days at leisure. Obama, in his first seven months, played 17 rounds of golf. Trump, in his first seven months, played 33 — and that doesn’t include his current 17-day stay at a favorite golf resort. The hypocrite is a tad sensitive about all this. He tweeted the other day, and again this morning, that his golf sojourn is actually “a working vacation” — and I suppose that’s true, if we accept the fact that his definition of working is tweeting. A rainy morning has kept him off the links, and so, swinging wildly in the sand trap of his mind, he’s been working hard to hurl fresh insults at whoever, using words like baby, child, con artist, defrauded, failing, fake, inept, lied, phony. So much for chief of staff John Kelly’s bid to curb the tweeting. (And even though he’s vacationing at a clip unmatched by Obama, the destructive work of Trump regime goes on; case in point, its relentless crusade to make coal the de facto national religion — at a time when even red states like Wyoming are enjoying a job boom from wind power.) But Trump will be hauling himself into his golf cart soon enough, so my real question is: How come Trump’s old allies on the Republican right — the party hacks and media megaphones who routinely attacked Barack Obama for playing golf — are so conspicuously mum about Trump’s flagrant breach of promise and his incurable addiction to tee time? If it’s apparently fine to play lots of golf, why did Trump and the other loudmouths target Obama? President Trump doubts that Kavanaugh accuser is telling the truth. Kavanaugh is too wonderful of a man to rape a woman. But Trump does not want the FBI to investigate. Why waste taxpayer money on an investigation that will go nowhere? Kavanaugh is innocent, he will make a wonderful Supreme Court Justice. So let's hear what the woman has to say, what Kavanaugh has to say, and then confirm Kavanaugh as Supreme Court Justice, because he deserves it. But no FBI investigation. We don't need it. Tweeting about storms, Trump seizes opportunity to make everything worse Jerry Adler 7 hours ago President Trump has been widely condemned for his tweets last week claiming the death toll figures in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria were inflated by Democrats to make him look bad. But give him some credit: At least he didn’t blame the storm on the media, James Comey or Jeff Sessions. Trump’s comments were wildly inaccurate and petty — deplorable, you could say — but the long tradition of storms bringing out the worst in American public discourse has numerous prior examples. Some evangelists seize on natural disasters — or even man-made ones, like 9/11 — to illustrate God’s punishment on people they disagree with. Pat Robertson infamously claimed that the 2010 earthquake in Haiti was God’s punishment on the nation for “a pact to the Devil” in exchange for their independence from France. That occurred in 1804, so none of the 160,000 people who died in the quake and its aftermath could have been implicated in the notorious deal, but God, as the Bible makes clear, believes in collective justice, and has a long memory. Franklin Graham was one of a large number of preachers who blamed the destruction of much of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina on the promiscuity and “perversion” (i.e., homosexuality) of that city’s inhabitants: “This is one wicked city, OK? It’s known for Mardi Gras, for Satan worship. It’s known for sex perversion. It’s known for every type of drugs and alcohol and the orgies. … There’s been a black spiritual cloud over New Orleans for years. They believe God is going to use that storm to bring revival.” Honorable mention for “worst use of weather to make a political point” goes to Trayon White, a member of the Washington, D.C., city council, for his response to an unexpected snowfall earlier this year. His reaction was to blame it on the Jews: “Y’all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation,” White said in a video posted to Facebook. “That’s a model based off the Rothschilds, controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful.” Bonus points for the sheer ignorance in believing that bankers can manipulate the weather, but at least no one died in the epic flurries. (White later apologized.) Trump at least didn’t claim Democrats actually caused the deaths in Puerto Rico, only that they exaggerated the number to attack him over what many islanders saw as an inadequate federal response. For his part, Trump described his administration’s performance as “an incredible, unsung success.” As has been well documented, it took an excruciatingly long time to clear roads and restore power and phone service to much of the island, circumstances that led researchers commissioned by the governor to calculate that “excess deaths” from the storm over the succeeding months amounted to nearly 3,000. The study did not investigate individual cases or enumerate specific causes of death, but it identified vulnerable populations as “older adults; individuals with chronic medical conditions; patients requiring ongoing and specialized treatment; and patients with required prescription medications, including controlled substances.” Imagine someone with, for instance, heart failure, stuck in an isolated town without power, unable to call for an ambulance. Brock Long, Trump’s FEMA chief, added his own gloss to this scenario, pointing out with characteristic Trumpian sensitivity that in the aftermath of disasters “spousal abuse goes through the roof.” You can’t blame the government for that. So it’s fair to describe Trump’s reaction as delusional, self-aggrandizing and disrespectful both to the families of the victims and the professionalism of the researchers at George Washington University who conducted the study. It reflects his implacable insistence that anything he does is an “incredible” or “unbelievable” success, adjectives that perhaps reveal more than he intends. And the whole sorry spectacle is unnecessary, except to feed his need for approval. Of course Democrats were quick to point a finger at Trump for the way the hurricane played out — that’s politics. During the Ebola outbreak in Africa in 2014, even before anyone in America had contracted the disease, Trump was sending out increasingly hysterical tweets, eventually more than 100, warning that President Obama’s failure to suspend all travel from Africa would lead to massive carnage, a death toll that eventually reached two. As Trump put it, about a physician who returned to the U.S. from treating Ebola victims: “If this doctor, who so recklessly flew into New York from West Africa, has Ebola, then Obama should apologize to the American people & resign!” Well, he said it. If he wanted to say something about Puerto Rico, Trump could have deplored the tragic loss of life despite FEMA’s best efforts, said something bland about lessons learned, and moved on. A sixth-grader could have written that for him. Except, of course, for his inability even to feign modesty, a tendency that was fostered by his early career as a developer in New York City. You don’t sell a $4 million apartment by advertising it as “pretty good, considering what we had to go through to get it built.” It’s the world’s most luxurious building with the most incredible views and unbelievable amenities, and anyone who says otherwise is an enemy who must be discredited. The backdrop to all this, of course, was Hurricane Florence, which as of Tuesday afternoon was directly responsible for at least 34 deaths, although it spared Robertson’s broadcasting and education empire in Virginia, for which Robertson took credit: “We’ve seen many, many, many prayers being answered,” Robertson said. “We prayed together in our staff a few days ago and asked the Lord to move that hurricane’s course away from this area and from what we gather right now, the storm track has shifted south of this area and we no longer are under the threat of a serious hurricane here. … For that, I’m grateful.” Hopefully the infrastructure in North Carolina will prove more resilient than Puerto Rico’s, and there won’t be too many more deaths in the months ahead. You’d think hurricanes would be one subject that is immune to partisan bickering — after all, there’s no pro-disaster constituency, outside the conspiracy theories about international bankers White, the D.C. councilman, was incoherently referencing. Or Rush Limbaugh’s paranoid musing that “the left” is hyping the danger of hurricanes to promote its climate-change agenda. Or CNN, which according to a tweet from Donald Trump Jr., staged a photo of Anderson Cooper in waist-deep water during the deluge from Florence, to dramatize the flooding and make his father look bad. Cooper really was standing in water up to his waist. And the picture was from a different hurricane, in another state, 10 years ago. So maybe we can come together on a deal here: If the right will stop blaming hurricanes on gays, the left will stop blaming them on Trump. Actually, never mind. As scientists increasingly believe that climate change is making tropical storms more powerful, the conclusion is inevitable: They really are his fault. _____ | |

Trump says it's hard for him to imagine Christine Blasey Ford's allegation against Brett Kavanaugh is true. Yet he wants to hear what she has to say. And he wants to hear what Kavanaugh has to say. Then, with an open mind, he will decide that Kavanaugh is telling the truth, and that the Ford woman i a woman who is mistaken: because this all happened many years ago, maybe it's only in her mind, maybe she was too young to understand what was happening, maybe a lot of other things. But Kavanaugh is a great man, who deserves to be on the Supreme Court. And the FBI has no business investigating Kavanaugh on false charges. So let Kavanaugh and Ford tell their stories, with no evidence, and then make up your mind who is more believable: Kavanaugh, a man who has sworn to uphold the law, or Ford, a woman who deals with psychological problems and maybe her own mind has been infected by the problems she has seen. President Trump does not want the FBI to investigate the Kavanaugh incident. He prefers that Kavanaugh and Ford testify in person, with no other witnesses or evidence. Then the Senate can make up their own minds who to believe. Why not use the FBI? Because Trump believes no evidence is needed, just the talk between the two parties. Maybe because Trump believes in his own powers of talk, and he believes in his own manufactured evidence, made from his powerful mind, which is far more important than any other evidence. No FBI. No talking to any people that were at the party. Kavanaugh claims he was not at the party. So any evidence of a witness who saw him at the party means that Kavanaugh either lied under oath, or conveniently forget what happened. If it can be proved that Kavanaugh was at the party, that is perjury on Kavanaugh's part. So instead of getting a seat on the Supreme Court, he could be disbarred as a lawyer. Also, why don't the Democrats try to prove Kavanaugh already lied, since there are questions about his previous testimony. --------- --------- Accuser's schoolmate says she recalls hearing of alleged Kavanaugh incident NBC News Ken Dilanian and Brandy Zadrozny and Ben Popken Sep 19th 2018 3:06PM WASHINGTON — A former schoolmate of Brett Kavanaugh's accuser wrote a Facebook post saying she recalls hearing about the alleged assault incident involving the future Supreme Court nominee, though she says she has no first-hand information to corroborate the accuser's claims. "Christine Blasey Ford was a year or so behind me," wrote the woman, Cristina Miranda King, who now works as a performing arts curator in Mexico City. "I did not know her personally but I remember her. This incident did happen." She added, "Many of us heard a buzz about it indirectly with few specific details. However Christine's vivid recollection should be more than enough for us to truly, deeply know that the accusation is true." Ford, a research psychologist in Northern California, has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her more than 30 years ago at a drunken high school party. He denies the allegation. The assertion that other people heard about and discussed an incident between Ford and Kavanaugh at the time it is alleged to have happened could loom as an important factor in any investigation of the claim. Democrats are calling for the FBI to investigate, but the bureau cannot do so unless the White House asks it to. There is no allegation of a federal crime, so the bureau's role would be to examine the matter as part of its background check into the fitness and character of a Supreme Court nominee. King has since taken down her Facebook post, which NBC News verified as having appeared on her account. She said on Twitter that she deleted it "because it served its purpose and I am now dealing with a slew of requests for interviews … Organizing how I want to proceed. Was not ready for that, not sure I am interested in pursuing. Thanks for reading." She later posted on Facebook: "To all media, I will not be doing anymore interviews. No more circus for me. To clarify my post: I do not have first hand knowledge of the incident that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford mentions, and I stand by my support for Christine. That's it. I don't have more to say on the subject. Please don't contact me further." NBC News confirmed that the statements were hers, but did not confirm her allegation. King has also been critical of Trump administration policy on social media. Ford's lawyer has said she wants the FBI to conduct an inquiry before she testifies in a public hearing. Republicans have scheduled a hearing for Monday at which they want to hear from her and Kavanaugh. In her original post, King said she knew Kavanaugh and Mark Judge, the man Ford says was present during the alleged assault. Judge has said through his attorney he remembers no such incident. King graduated in 1983 from Holton-Arms, the elite all-female private school that Ford also attended, according to an open letter King and many other alumnae signed in support of Ford. King's post described a culture of heavy drinking among the students of the elite male and female private schools of Washington, D.C., including her own Holton-Arms and also Georgetown Preparatory School, which Judge and Kavanaugh attended. Judge has written two memoirs acknowledging his heavy drinking during that period. In his 1997 memoir, "Wasted," Judge writes about a "Bart O'Kavanaugh," who passes out drunk and throws up in a car. Holton-Arms did not return a call seeking verification of King's attendance. But a 1982 yearbook lists "Cristina King" as a student, and member of the Holton-Arms Athletic Association, an honor society. In her senior year, she led the school chorus as president, according to the 1983 yearbook. "Cristina King was able to keep the chorus members in tune as they trooped up to Hill and Lawrenceville to dazzle the boys with their talent and good looks," the club's yearbook page reads. The Republicans fought to confirm Clarence Thomas against sexual misconduct charges back in 1991. So the Republicans destroyed Anita Hill's reputation, and Clarence Thomas got a seat on the Supreme Court. Now the Republicans want to destroy a woman who claims Brett Kavanaugh tried to rape her. HuffPost Ariel Edwards-Levy,HuffPost 7 hours ago (Alex Wroblewski / Reuters) The sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court hopeful Brett Kavanaugh so far appears to have had virtually no effect on public support for his nomination, new polling finds. Although he remains historically unpopular, he doesn’t appear to have suffered any further attrition over the course of the past week. In three HuffPost/YouGov surveys ― one taken entirely before the scandal broke, one after the revelation that an allegation had been made against him and the third after the accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, publicly stepped forward ― opposition to confirming Kavanaugh has ranged between 31 and 34 percent. In the most recent poll, 32 percent support his confirmation, 32 percent oppose it and another 36 percent aren’t sure. Among those who disapprove of President Donald Trump’s choice of Kavanaugh for the seat, just 46 percent say their opposition stems from an objection to Kavanaugh personally, rather than a lack of confidence in Trump’s ability to nominate a suitable candidate. September surveys from other outlets, most of which were conducted prior to the latest news cycle, put Kavanaugh’s net support between -1 and +6. Part of the reason for the current stability may be that many people still aren’t focused on the story. Fewer than a quarter of respondents to the latest HuffPost/YouGov survey say they’re following Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings very closely, basically unchanged from earlier in the month; search engine data suggests Hurricane Florence probably drew a lot more attention. Seventy percent of Americans say they’ve heard at least something about Blasey’s accusation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were both high school students, but just 35 percent that they’ve heard a lot about them. Even after hearing about the allegations, however, the public is split 35/36 on whether or not Kavanaugh should withdraw his nomination. Nearly half of Americans say they’re not sure if the allegation against Kavanaugh is credible or not ― those who do have an opinion one way or another are close to evenly divided. Thirty-nine percent say that the sexual assault allegation, if true, disqualifies Kavanaugh from serving on the Supreme Court, with 18 percent calling it relevant but not disqualifying, and 20 percent finding it not relevant at all. By comparison, in past HuffPost/YouGov polls, a 57 percent majority said the accusations against GOP Senate hopeful Roy Moore were disqualifying if true, and 63 percent said the same of the domestic violence allegations against former White House aide Rob Porter. Initial reactions to Kavanaugh’s nomination were already deeply polarized. The responses to the allegations ― like sentiments about the Me Too movement more broadly ― diverge sharply along those same political lines, leaving opinions as entrenched as they were previously. Sixty-two percent of Hillary Clinton voters, compared to 18 percent of non-voters and just 4 percent of Trump voters, say the allegation is credible; three-quarters of Clinton voters, 34 percent of non-voters and a tenth of Trump voters consider it disqualifying if true. More than 80 percent of Trump voters say they’d rather see the president continue to back Kavanaugh than replace him with another conservative nominee. As is often the case, politics is far more of a dividing line than gender, although some differences stand out within each voting bloc. Male and female Trump voters both see the accusation against Kavanaugh as lacking credibility and irrelevant to his nomination, but the men are 23 points and 9 points likelier, respectively, to hold those opinions. Across the aisle, male Clinton voters are more likely than female Clinton voters to view the accusation as credible ― the women are no more likely to doubt it, but do more commonly choose not to state an opinion. Gender also influences the personal perspectives different people bring to the controversy. Men say by an 11-point margin that they worry more about being accused of sexual harassment than of facing it, while women say by a 23-point margin that they’re more worried they will be harassed. A majority of both men and women say they’re not concerned about either possibility, although half of women under 30 report fearing sexual harassment. The current fight over Kavanaugh’s nomination draws unavoidable comparisons to 1991, when pollsters were asking similar questions about the accusations against Clarence Thomas. At the time, Thomas was generally popular with the American public, and Anita Hill’s testimony did little to change public opinion. In one survey, 62 percent of the public said they believed Hill’s charges would have been taken more seriously if there were more than two women serving in the Senate. Today, Americans say by an 8-point margin that Thomas shouldn’t have been confirmed, according to the HuffPost/YouGov survey. Just a tenth of those polled say the Senate is doing a better job of handling sexual misconduct allegations today than it did in 1991, with 24 percent saying it’s worse and 34 percent that it’s about the same. The HuffPost/YouGov poll consisted of 1,000 completed interviews conducted Sept. 17-18 among U.S. adults using a sample selected from YouGov’s opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population. GOP Fakes Sincerity for Kavanaugh’s Accuser, Then Goes In for Kill What they’ve learned in 27 years is to play it cool for 24 hours, so the narrative is ‘Republicans Agree Ford Should Be Heard.’ Then they start turning the screws. Michael Tomasky 09.20.18 5:20 AM ET opinion Well, it seems the Republicans have learned exactly one thing in the 27 years since the Anita Hill hearings: be respectful to the woman in the first 24 hours. Hey, that’s progress. At this rate, they’ll demand an FBI investigation in 2045, and by 2072, who knows, maybe they’ll actually believe the woman! Read this New York Times article from October 7, 1991. It’s the first-day article announcing the explosive news that Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment just two days away from his full Senate confirmation vote. Advertisement In it, the reporter writes that the George H.W. Bush White House began pushback against Hill that very day, or the day before: White House staffers gave reporters the name of another woman who had worked with Hill and Thomas at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and would vouch for Thomas. The woman said Hill was making the charges up out of spite that Thomas “did not show any sexual interest in her” (the Times’ words, not the woman’s). Compare to today. Kellyanne Conway said straight out of the chute that Dr. Ford deserves to be heard. Donald Trump said nothing untoward about her. Can you imagine how itchy his Twitter finger was on Monday morning? But they hid his smart phone in the White House gym or vegetable cellar or some other chamber Trump doesn’t frequent. I’m not complimenting them. I’m observing that they figured out that the narrative on these kinds of things is set in the first 24 hours and so it was crucial that for those 24 hours, they behave themselves. Seem like they learned from last time, or even from #MeToo. Lindsey Graham, earlier in the week, even uttered the r-word: “I’d have a hard time putting somebody on the Court that I thought tried to rape somebody. Period.” That quote arrested me, as it seemed to indicate that Graham was actually being open to the possibility of an investigation to determine just what Brett Kavanaugh actually did that night. But within 24 hours, Graham was back on side. “Requiring an FBI investigation of a 36-year-old allegation (without specific references to time or location) before Professor Ford will appear before the Judiciary Committee is not about finding the truth, but delaying the process till after the midterm elections,” Graham tweeted after Christine Blasey Ford's lawyer said she wanted an FBI investigation before testifying. “It is imperative the Judiciary committee move forward on the Kavanaugh nomination and a committee vote be taken ASAP.” Related in Politics GOP Delivers Ultimatum to Kavanaugh’s Accuser The Republicans Grilling Christine Blasey Ford Are All Men Kavanaugh Prep School Pal Doesn’t Want to Testify Publicly So that’s what they’ve learned in 27 years—and evidently, it’s all they need to learn, because it looks like it’s going to get their nominee through. They played it cool at the start so that the first-day stories wouldn’t say the Republicans blew a gasket and immediately started discrediting the woman; so that instead, those stories would say “Republicans agree Dr. Ford should be heard.” Establish them as reasonable people. Then, once they skated through that news cycle, they’d start turning the screws. They played it like Bond villains. Sit down, Meestah Bond. We are both men of the world. We have much to discuss. Beluga caviar? Dom Perignon ’55? What’s that, you prefer the ’53? Alfonso, down to the cellar, fetch a bottle of the ’53! It’s all civility for a few hours. Then they attach him to the laser beam machine with the piranhas swimming below. That’s what the Republicans do, except they’re smarter than Blofeld. They don’t walk away so the captive can escape. They stay and watch. They finish the job. They know exactly what they can get away with, because they know the sad truth of the matter. The sad truth of the matter is that Ford and her lawyers don’t have the leverage to force an FBI investigation or delay the hearing. The only leverage Ford had, potentially, was if Donald Trump had called her a liar and a slut in those first 24 hours. Then, she’d have been a figure of enormous sympathy. Now, alas, she’s mostly a figure of partisan sympathy. Mind you, she shouldn’t have to demand an FBI probe. If the Republicans were actually interested in learning the truth about what happened on that long-ago night, of course they’d want the FBI to look into it. If the White House was interested, it would have directed the FBI to get to the bottom of her allegations. By the way, if this isn’t too dog-bites-man, Donald Trump lied about all that. “The FBI said they don’t really do that,” he said Tuesday. No. According to Pete Williams of NBC news, it’s up to the White House to ask the FBI to investigate. But they didn’t want an FBI probe. They were terrified of what an FBI probe would find, just as they were all mortified at the idea that they might have to be relying on Mark Judge as a character witness. So they’re getting their way, probably. Although Ford could still show up next Monday and blow people away. She’d need to find just the right tone in telling them, 'You set me up; you made me come up here with a few days’ preparation while getting death threats and take your best shots, and fine, I’m doing it.' If she does testify and does it well, she can turn this around one more time. And if she can’t, well, that’s a hell of a weight to put on someone who was a private person minding her own business until five days ago. I believe her. I bet most people believe her. I bet Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski end up believing her. But I bet they won’t have the courage to admit it. Just remember: If Kavanaugh does make it, there’s one good way to get revenge. Vote. Vote, vote, vote. Make the Senate Democratic. That should ensure no more Supreme Court choices for Trump if another vacancy opens up (the Democrats just need to stonewall, as the Republicans did to Merrick Garland) and virtually no confirmations of any consequence. While campaigning for president, Trump promised he would never play golf because he would be too busy working at the job of being president. Believe me." The once-vocal critic of presidential golfing seemed to ignore his own campaign promise once he took office and has now golfed 144 times since taking office. In his first year alone, Trump spent more time on the links than President George W. Bush did during his two terms in office, and almost three times as much as Barack Obama did during his first year. In fact, Donald Trump visits his golf course in Northern Virginia so much that one canoeing group is suing his administration for placing allegedly illegal and frequent restrictions on the Potomac River—which borders the Trump-owned hotel. The Canoe Cruisers Association of Greater Washington on Thursday filed a lawsuit alleging the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security are “revoking the public’s legal right to access and enjoy a popular section of the Potomac River whenever President Trump visits Trump National.” “We would like them to recognize the Potomac is a recreational river and we are allowed to use it recreationally,” Barbara Brown, Canoe Cruisers Association Chairman, told The Daily Beast on Thursday. “We have had to alter all of our plans because we never know when the president is going to be around.” Filed at the U.S. District Court in Maryland, the complaint alleges a Coast Guard-established rule that prevents use of the Potomac along Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia is unlawful. The “permanent security zone” rule announced last July restricts access along two miles of the river anytime the president or any other high-ranking official is at the club, which is often on weekends and holidays. “The Coast Guard can both ensure that the President’s security needs are fully met and uphold the inherent rights of the public to access and recreate on the Potomac, the Nation’s River,” reads the suit. The lawsuit additionally alleges the Coast Guard didn’t follow proper protocol when rolling out this new security-zone rule. “There’s a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things, and this lawsuit is about doing things the right way because that matters,” Anne Harkavy, executive director of Democracy Forward, a legal nonprofit that filed in conjunction with the canoers, said in a statement. “The President can retreat to his private club and play golf, but the Administration can’t shirk its obligation to hear and respond to the public’s concerns about a permanent deprivation of legal access to part of the Potomac River,” Harkavy continued. In the lawsuit, the canoe association of more than 250 members cites at least 32 times since last June that the river was made off-limits because the president decided to play golf. “The Administration needs to listen to the hundreds of river users who opposed this rule, and establish with certainty a reasonable outcome that maintains access to this treasured natural resource while addressing the legitimate security considerations for the President,” Brown said in a statement. In addition to naming U.S. Coast Guard commandant Karl L. Schultz as a defendant, the lawsuit alleges the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Kirsten M. Nielsen are responsible for neglecting to address the “unlawful” rule. When the new rule went into effect last summer, local canoers and kayakers immediately offered vocal critiques. After two weeks of public outcry and what Brown called a “big publicity problem,” the Coast Guard announced they would be open to reversing the rule. “As long as they stay to the Maryland side of the Potomac River, they can pass clearly when the security zone is in effect,” Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Paul Zunkunft said at a congressional hearing. During a one-month period last year after the rule went into effect, the Coast Guard opened a “comment period” which Brown described as an “open forum for paddlers.” More than 634 comments were filed in an effort to change the rule, Brown said, and DHS promised to address the issue. But according to the new complaint, the feds ended up doing nothing. “DHS was legally required to address these commends and revise the rule— and it promised that it would do so,” the suit states. “Nevertheless, the Rule has been in place for well more than a full year and DHS has taken no steps to revise the Rule or otherwise respond to comment in any way.” Brown, who has been an active member of the association since 1959, said the lawsuit seeks to hold the Coast Guard and the DHS accountable. “We are not trying to make trouble,” Brown said. “But there is no advanced notice we are being chased off the river and people are often told to leave. This is a conservation issue.” Democracy Forward says unlike past administrations that have only temporarily established river restrictions, the Trump administration has gone far beyond that practice and caused a chilling effect for public river users. “The rule has created uncertainty surrounding public use of a popular section of the river while the President is golfing, something he has spent nearly 25 percent of his days in office doing,” Democracy Forward said in a press release on Thursday. Also, as President, he is shielded from criminal prosecution, because his job is too important, and as Brett Kavanaugh wrote, a President should not have to deal with minor distractions while in office (this was after he earlier helped plan the interrogation of President Bill Clinton for all details of his trysts with intern Monica Lewinsky, but Clinton was a Democrat, and there are different rules for Democrats and Republicans). The president is one of the finest persons we have ever known, famous for his wit and warm heart and generosity to others. Trump said his Supreme Court nominee is “under assault” by Democrats who want to derail his confirmation to the high court. “Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians who don’t want to know the answers,” Trump tweeted. “They just want to destroy and delay. Facts don’t matter. I go through this with them every single day in D.C.” “I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents,” he continued. “I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!” According to statistics cited by the national anti-sexual violence organization RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the majority of sexual assaults aren’t reported to police, usually because of fears of retaliation. “The radical left lawyers want the FBI to get involved NOW,” the president added. “Why didn’t someone call the FBI 36 years ago?” Ford says she was sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh in the early 1980s at a house party in suburban Maryland. Former Student: Brett Kavanaugh’s Prep School Party Scene Was A ‘Free-For-All’ HuffPost Ashley Feinberg,HuffPost 18 hours ago For the duration of his time on campus, a former student recalls, the guiding principle among Georgetown Preparatory School students was straightforward: Don’t be a narc. “Don’t tell, don’t tell,” said the former student, who overlapped at the school in North Bethesda, Maryland, with current Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, class of ’83. It was a code of preppy omerta to which Kavanaugh himself has alluded. “But then,” the former student continued, “you’re getting all these 14-, 15-, 16-year-olds, 17-year-old kids doing whatever the fuck they wanted to do, with no repercussions. Drugs everywhere. Partying everywhere. Drinking — just whatever we wanted to do. It was unbelievable, off the rails. And that’s just how it was.” Sexual misconduct, the former student says, was routine, shrugged off. “My friend, who went to one of the private girls’ schools, said she woke up with a guy on top of her,” the former student said. “And this was not a situation where people would talk about it. They would just say: ‘Oh, well, how’d you do? How was your weekend?’ ‘Oh, well, I got attacked.’ And that was just normal then. It was an attitude where ‘No’ didn’t necessarily mean ‘I’m going to stop.’ It meant ‘I’m going to keep going,’ and ‘I’m going to keep going because I’m privileged and I’m allowed to and I’m not going to get in trouble for it.’” The former student would speak about his time at Georgetown Prep only on the condition of anonymity, fearing attacks from his fellow alumni. Based on the response to Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her when they were both in high school, his fears are not unfounded. In describing the culture of the school in those days, the former student pointed to the April 1984 overdose of 28-year-old David Kennedy, son of Robert F. Kennedy, who’d injected drugs into his groin, apparently to hide the needle marks. (Cocaine, Demerol and Mellaril were found in his system.) The former student spoke of Kennedy’s death as the end of the school’s free-for-all party scene and the catalyst for changes in Georgetown Prep culture. Two Prep students — David’s brother Doug, and his friend Derrick Evans — had helped David Kennedy score the coke. Doug, class of ’86, had been at the center of Georgetown Prep social life, which the former student characterized as “weekly frat-style parties with the neighboring sister schools and other private schools,” often hosted by Kennedy at his family’s house in McLean, Virginia. The death certainly registered on campus. The former student remembered the FBI showing up at Georgetown Prep one day and questioning a student. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh shit, what happened? How is this going to affect us?’” said the former student. “‘Were we involved? Did this happen with us?’ That kind of thing. It was never a situation where anybody told on anyone.” The former student recently spoke with HuffPost about the party scene in which our current Supreme Court nominee spent his formative years. The conversation, which has been condensed and edited for clarity, is below. First, just generally, I’d be interested in hearing what you remember about the culture of Georgetown Prep while you were there. I guess you could call it a fraternity between a bunch of rich kids. All this shit happens, and then nobody really wants to talk about it, because if one person crumbles, the whole system crumbles, and everybody tells on everybody. And that’s not the way Georgetown Prep has ever been. And you and Kavanaugh were there at the same time? When Kavanaugh and I overlapped, it would have been 1982, and that’s when Kavanaugh was a senior. [Current Supreme Court Justice] Neil Gorsuch [who also attended Prep] would have been a sophomore. Now, as far as Gorsuch goes, he was so straight-up. He was like, “Golly gee,” one of those kids. And Prep has always been a very elite school with 400 students. One hundred per class — that’s all they would ever let in. Some of it was academic merit, but the rest of it was privilege. I didn’t have a lot of interaction with Kavanaugh, but I did know of Mark Judge, the other guy who was named. My first reaction I had was, “Oh, that guy.” Yeah, that seems to be the general sentiment around him. I mean, we were teenagers, but there was sex and drugs and more drugs and more partying and belligerence and disrespect, all going on at all times while I was there. Around 1986 is when Georgetown Prep really changed, and it went back to a more strict, Jesuit-based style. What prompted the change? A lot of the stuff that happened in the ’70s and the ’80s and the time that Kavanaugh was there and those parties that Judge described, it was common. That’s what happened all the time. One of the biggest people and one of the most influential people there was Doug Kennedy. He was one of the youngest RFK kids, and Dougie, as we called him, was the one who had all these huge parties. There were other parties, but everybody remembers Kennedy parties because they were in McLean at the house where Ethel Kennedy lived. The police would be there, but they would say, “Oh, are you going to the party? We’ll escort you.” That kind of thing. And, you know, they’re escorting a load of teenage kids in a car who were all going to underage drink and party. And as I remember, it was hundreds of kids — boys and girls from different schools, all private. No public schools were involved. And what would happen was a lot of drinking. There was one room full of drugs, everybody would be doing coke. And in another room, everybody would be smoking weed. And then in another room, people would be having sex. And there would be all sorts of unwanted stuff going on. What do you mean when you say “unwanted stuff”? These were the situations where, I think, you could talk to any prep school girl, and they would say, yeah, I was attacked or I was abused or I was touched or I was done in this improper fashion. And like I said, it was a fraternity, but it was also a situation where the girls wouldn’t talk about it later on, either. A lot of these women basically became kept women. Was the assault that Christine Blasey Ford described typical? Yeah, and a lot of that happened. And I think she said she was in a bathing suit, so that happened at Beach Week, I would guess. That’s where everybody would go down to the coast, over to Ocean City [Maryland], or Rehoboth [Beach, Delaware], one of the local beaches. And somebody would have a house, or somebody would rent a house, and then it would just turn into a free-for-all there. My friend, who went to one of the private girls’ schools, said she woke up with a guy on top of her. And this was not a situation where people would talk about it. They would just say: “Oh, well, how’d you do? How was your weekend?” “Oh, well, I got attacked.” And that was just normal then. It was an attitude where “No” didn’t necessarily mean “I’m going to stop.” It meant “I’m going to keep going,” and “I’m going to keep going because I’m privileged and I’m allowed to and I’m not going to get in trouble for it.” So the Kennedy parties were the most notorious. But every weekend there was some sort of party base during the school year where there was drugs, alcohol—which was typical, but we’re talking about 14-, 15-, 16-, 17-year-old kids. I remember hearing about [Kennedy’s death] after it happened in Florida. It was a small school and everyone was talking about it. It came out in the news, and it was all over The Washington Post. And everybody was like, “Oh shit, what happened? How is this going to affect us? Were we involved? Did this happen with us?” That kind of thing. And it was never a situation where anybody told on anyone. That was the weirdness about all of it. It was hushed up and cleaned up quickly because of the Kennedy connection. In the weeks after, no one really talked about it. How would you hear about parties or meet kids from the other private schools? Most it was based on the football schedule. Like, as a football team, we played all the other prep schools. That’s where all the parties started, and that’s where all the parties went. I don’t think it was something that we invented. I think that it was a culture that had been there for a long time, and then it just progressively got more abusive, and more and more and more and more abusive. How often did these Beach Week parties happen? They were considered a rite of passage. An end-of-the-year blowout. Partying at the beach was typically way more crazy than what happened during the school year. Inhibitions were thrown out the window. Fighting was a lot less common, but there was more sex involved and even more liberties taken because the parents were so far away. At least, that’s what I concluded from my experiences at Beach Week every year. It was a game of who could party the most, who could drink the most, who could get the most girls, who could get away with the most crazy shit. A lot of these kids at these prep schools had family homes at the beach. And if not, they rented homes for the week. Do you think people would have even remembered something like what Blasey described? Like, would it have registered? | |

Every weekend there was this whole idea of, “Hey, where are you going this weekend?” “Well, so-and-so’s having a party or someone’s having a party at their house.” Usually because their parents were gone — that would happen all the time. Then everybody would go over there, the entire class. Or at least, anybody who was cool or anybody who could party would go. Anybody who could get a ride, or anybody who had a car. And then all the girls’ schools in the area. If you talked to any of the girls there, they would all say, “Oh, yeah, of course there was a culture where assaults like that happen.” But was it something people ever talked about at the time? It was just a weird culture of how there was no telling ― you know, don’t tell, don’t tell. But then you’re getting all these 14-, 15-, 16-year-olds, 17-year-old kids doing whatever the fuck they wanted to do, with no repercussions. Drugs everywhere. Partying everywhere. Drinking — just whatever we wanted to do. It was unbelievable, off the rails. And that’s just how it was. Most of the kids I went to school with were either privileged or from foreign governments or whatever. They could get away with anything. One last question: Blasey said her assault happened at a smaller party — four boys in total. Were smaller parties like that common, in addition to these big ragers? It was more common to have at least 50 people there at a party. But these smaller parties ― usually what happened was that it was a Beach Week party, where the kids went to the beach. Somebody had a house, and whoever was there and whoever heard about the party went to the party. So there may have been as few as five people. There may have been as many as a hundred. It just depends. But that was not uncommon. As soon as I read the description, I was like, “Oh, yeah, that’s your typical prep school party, where it’s just a bunch of kids just going off the rails.” That’s the best way to describe it. The investigation reveals the most complete picture yet of the staggering inventory and value of Trump-owned real estate. LAS VEGAS — President Trump’s companies own more than 400 condo units and home lots whose sale could steer millions of dollars to Trump, a USA TODAY investigation has found. USA TODAY spent four months cataloging every property Trump's companies own across the country. Reporters found that Trump’s companies are sitting on at least $250 million of individual properties in the USA alone. Property records show Trump’s trust and his companies own at least 422 luxury condos and penthouses from New York City to Las Vegas, 12 mansion lots on bluffs overlooking his golf course on the Pacific Ocean and dozens more smaller pieces of real estate. The properties range in value from about $200,000 to $35 million each. Unlike developments where Trump licenses his name to a separate developer for a flat fee, profits from selling individual properties directly owned by his companies ultimately enrich him personally. Trump has never disclosed a complete, unit-by-unit inventory of his companies' real estate holdings or sales, nor is he required to do so by federal law. Trump says he's separated himself from his businesses, but the trust set up in January is run by his sons. Trump is the only beneficiary and can withdraw funds at any time. The volume of real estate creates an extraordinary and unprecedented potential for people, corporations or foreign interests to try to influence a president. Anyone who wanted to court favor with the president could snap up multiple properties or purposefully overpay. They could buy in the name of a shell company, making it impossible for the public to know who was behind the sales. The potential for conflicts is exacerbated by Trump's refusal to release his tax returns or fully separate himself from his businesses, breaking with precedent set by presidents going back four decades. Since Congress passed the Ethics in Government Act in 1978, all six presidents from Carter to Obama established blind trusts or limited investments to assets like mutual funds. Trump has not. The president is exempt from most conflict-of-interest laws that apply to others working in the federal government. He is not required to disclose when units sell or who bought them. He is barred by the Constitution from receiving gifts from foreign governments or officials. Trump’s assessment that the ban doesn’t apply to market-rate transactions is debated in lawsuits and among ethics experts. Regardless, it may be impossible for the public to even know who is behind purchase because the rules governing real estate transactions allow for shell companies to make purchases without disclosing who actually paid the money. “Anyone seeking to influence the president could set up an anonymous company and purchase his property,” said Heather Lowe, director of government affairs at Global Financial Integrity, a D.C.-based group aimed at curbing illicit financial transactions. “It’s a big black box, and the system is failing as a check for conflicts of interest.” Since Election Day, records show Trump companies have sold at least 14 luxury condos and home-building lots for about $23 million. Half were sold to limited liability companies. No names were listed in deeds, obscuring buyers’ identities. Since launching his White House bid, Trump’s companies have sold at least 58 units nationwide for about $90 million. Almost half of those sold to LLCs. That doesn’t count Trump's ownership of millions of square feet of some of America’s priciest office and retail rental space in Manhattan, Chicago and San Francisco. Buyers and renters of Trump properties include companies or individuals tracing to addresses in at least a dozen countries. The White House refers business inquiries to the Trump Organization, where four separate executives and spokesmen declined to answer specific questions. Bobby Burchfield, an attorney hired as an independent ethics reviewer for Trump Organization business deals, wouldn’t answer specific questions about transactions. Trump attorneys have argued that profits from individual real estate sales would route through a maze of Trump subsidiaries and eventually become mixed in a larger pool of undifferentiated money in the president’s trust. That, they say, makes a direct conflict from an individual sale more difficult to imagine. They do not consider sales of U.S. real estate to foreign investors as “foreign deals." Those in the business of selling Trump-owned real estate say business is up. “I get a lot more phone calls now that he’s the president,” said Shari Sanderson, a real estate agent that sells units in the Las Vegas hotel-condo tower. A mysterious bulk buyer A couple of weeks before the Republican National Convention, a Las Vegas financial firm filed paperwork to found Milan Investment Limited in Nevada. Days later, the newly minted company went on a buying spree. Milan spent $3.1 million over four months to buy 11 luxury condos in a shimmering golden tower near the Strip that Trump owns with friend and casino mogul Phil Ruffin. Trump Ruffin LLC collected the last of the money weeks before Trump was elected. Milan Investment tracks back to what appears to be an incorrect address, the strip mall office of a financial services firm. The owner, Thomas Sullivan, said he never heard of Milan Investment but said a federal “regulatory” agency visited his office in person asking similar questions. He declined to identify the agency. “We’re completely in the dark,” Sullivan said. “We don’t know if it was a mistake, or they used our address for some reason, but we aren’t associated with them.” On the deeds from Milan’s purchases, Eric Trump signed for the sellers. An accountant signed for the buyers, and deeds do not identify any people behind Milan. USA TODAY tracked corporate, loan and property records across Nevada, Texas and Canada to tie three names to Milan Investment. In Nevada, where rules let anyone form companies without identifying the owners, Milan’s officers are listed as Jun Xu and Qi Huang with an address at an office suite on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Additional documents underlying the sale give two more addresses, both million-dollar condos in Vancouver, for Xu and Huang. Canadian records indicate they own both and hold a license to rent one. The records list Xu as a “businessman” and Huang as a “housewife.” USA TODAY contacted every phone number and address found for Xu and Huang in two countries. Reporters also contacted every business associate identified in Nevada public records as having worked with the company or assisted with the condo buys, trying to reach Xu and Huang or find out more about them. Xu and Huang have not responded. One more name tied to Milan is Chen Huang of Sugar Land, Texas, who signed loan documents “on behalf of Jun Xu and Qi Huang” when they borrowed money using the Vegas condos as collateral. Phone numbers for Chen Huang in Texas were answered but disconnected after a reporter identified himself. Most Nevada real estate and legal professionals who handled deals would not answer questions. A lawyer who reviewed paperwork for the lender, Michael Wixom, said only, “We file the UCC paperwork and represent the bank locally. It’s all consistent with Nevada state law, and it’s not unusual to not know the name of the owners.” Reporters sent questions about the identity-obscuring real estate sales to a public relations firm representing Trump in New York, the Trump Organization’s marketing vice president, its vice president of sales in Las Vegas and Eric Trump. None of the inquiries was answered. The deal in 2016 makes Milan Investment the third-biggest investor in the Vegas building, behind Trump’s own company and Hilton Hotels, which owns 311 of the condos. Kathleen Clark, a government ethics expert and professor at Washington University School of Law, said there’s a strong argument for requiring disclosure of anyone buying real estate from the president. “They’re doing it through Trump companies, but nevertheless, if it’s going to benefit the president, I think the public has a right to know who’s paying the president,” Clark said. In February, businesswoman Xiao Yan Chen bought one of the president’s penthouses at Trump Park Avenue in Manhattan for $15.9 million, according to city records. Chen is founder and managing director of Global Alliance Associates, a New York City firm described on its website as “a boutique business relationship consultancy for U.S. companies seeking to establish a presence in mainland China.” She could not be reached for comment. A few days before Trump’s inauguration, a two-bedroom condo on the 55th floor of the Las Vegas tower sold for $639,000. The buyer of Condo No. 5507 is identified in deeds as Fashion Drive, a New York company named for the street below and formed days before the purchase. The only real person named in company's corporate filings in New York is Ivan Antonevich, a Ukrainian-educated pain doctor who did not reply to interview requests. It’s unclear whether he owns the condo, represents the buyer, or something else happened. As part of a federal crackdown on criminals using real estate to hide illicit cash, title insurance companies in a handful of U.S. cities must gather identity information and report all-cash deals above certain amounts to the government. Industry insiders said the opacity of most shell company real estate buys is for practical, legitimate reasons. “Privacy is a big driver of the LLCs, whether it’s celebrities protecting their privacy or foreign dissidents hiding assets from an oppressive government or law enforcement officers worried about their safety from criminals,” said Steve Gottheim, senior counsel at the American Land Title Association. Some investors in the Vegas building were easy to track down and willing to talk. One New York couple set up a company, SNJ Properties, to buy a unit in December. SNJ is owned by Susan and John Irwin of East Islip, N.Y., who bought a second condo in the building for vacation and as an investment. They said it didn’t have much to do with politics. “I’m a big fan of his, but the fact that Trump is president didn’t influence our decision,” said John Irwin, who owns Irwin Construction. Irwin, who met Trump at the hotel once, said he doesn’t worry about other people’s blind purchases of Trump’s real estate. “It doesn’t bother me. He’s a businessman, and that’s who we elected.” Trump’s leasable space in cities such as New York, Chicago and San Francisco bring in large sums as well. Commercial space at Trump Tower earned him almost $30 million in 2012, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission to back up a loan Trump took out against the space. Among the revenue: multimillion-dollar lease payments from the communist government-owned Industrial & Commercial Bank of China. The Chinese bank’s lease is one of several transactions flagged in a lawsuit against Trump by an ethics watchdog group, alleging Trump violates the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which forbids government officials from taking gifts from foreign powers. More deals ready to be made The White House and Trump surrogates have broadly contended that the president is not involved in his business deals and scoff at the idea that a billionaire tycoon could be influenced by individual real estate transactions in the six- or seven-figure range. The USA TODAY review of publicly available records — including figures provided by the president himself — shows that his individual real estate transactions add up and have substantially driven his income in recent years. Consider the Vegas tower. In his federal financial disclosure in 2016, the income Trump said he received from the Vegas venture is more than the revenue he reported from all but one of his approximately 500 companies. USA TODAY’s analysis of the 2016 report indicates Trump’s income includes at least $100 million a year from real estate sales and lease transactions. That number is probably higher because companies’ income is reported in ranges spanning millions of dollars. Trump and his daughter Ivanka have reported drawing multimillion-dollar incomes from Trump International Realty in recent years. Trump’s financial disclosure reported about $4 million in commissions in 2016, and Jared Kushner’s disclosure reports his wife earns $1 million to $5 million a year in commissions and fees from the firm. At Trump properties across the country, more deals are ready to be made. “We’re selling quite a few of those now,” Ruffin said of the partners’ Vegas tower, where he and Trump own 388 condos and penthouses. “It’s picked up, our volume.” Ruffin owns an adjacent lot and is interested in building another tower and casino there, possibly partnering with the Trump Organization. Kavanaugh, Trump's pick to fill a vacant Supreme Court seat, was accused of sexual assault by former classmate Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Although Kavanaugh's nomination was met with resistance, calls for him to step down intensified when Ford publicly stated that he assaulted her during a high school party. Although many people jumped to defend Kavanaugh, Whelan went way deep. Let's walk through Whelan's Twitter thread and attempt to unpack this mess. "Dr. Ford may well have been the victim of a severe sexual assault by someone 36 years ago," Whelan writes on Twitter. "Her allegations are so vague as to such basic matters as when and where that it is impossible for Judge Kavanaugh to *prove* his innocence." Using addresses found in a yearbook and details provided to the Washington Post, Whelan laid out four locations on Google Maps. Then, he says he was able to locate a possible house where the alleged assault happened on Zillow, which shows the floor plan of the house. According to Whelan, Kavanaugh's classmate Chris Garrett lived in that home at the time. Using the floor plan, Whelan reasons that Dr. Ford's account of her assault matches up with the house's layout. Then he says that because of the way the house is laid out, "someone leaving the house down the stairs and out the front door wouldn't be seen from the family room." He's casting doubt here, and suggesting it could have been anyone. Whelan then casts more doubt by implying Chris Garrett was possibly responsible. He uses a screenshot of a sleazy Facebook interaction to prove that Garrett was friends with Mark Judge, who was allegedly in the room at the party in question. Whelan even goes as far as to post side-by-side photos of the two men, claiming they look alike and could be easily confused. Spoiler alert: they both look like doughy bros as teenagers, and as doughy middle-aged bros now. "Kavanaugh categorically denies being at the gathering and committing the assault," Whelan writes. "Beyond his countless character witnesses from then and now, Judge and Smyth have informed the Senate Judiciary Committee that they recall no such gathering at which Kavanaugh was present." But then Whelan backpedals in an effort to not get sued by Garrett for, you know, publicly accusing him of assaulting Dr. Ford: Which is lawyer speak for ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. "It is regrettable that private citizens are being drawn into this," he concludes his conspiracy thread, as if he didn't just drag a private citizen into this. Since coming forward as the woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, the psychology professor who lives in Northern California has been bombarded with death threats and harassment, and has reportedly gone into hiding with her family. Twitter initially let the troll who posted Blasey’s personal information back on its platform after less than a day. “Twitter banned me for 12 hours. I’m back lol,” he wrote Monday morning, then continued tweeting the details about the professor. Twitter suspended his account again on Monday evening. Twitter officials declined to answer HuffPost’s questions about why he was allowed to continue his doxxing campaign after his initial suspension, or why his offending tweets remained online for so long. “We do not proactively look for content that breaks our rules,” a spokesperson said. “The actions we take are not dependent on the number of reports we receive.” Doxxing, or posting someone’s private details online, is among the most common forms of harassment on Twitter. For trolls, it’s a quick and impactful way to abuse ― and in some cases, endanger ― their targets. Twitter prohibits the practice in its terms of service and acknowledges that it “may pose serious safety and security risks for the person whose information is shared,” but the platform is notoriously bad at addressing the issue when it occurs. Twitter relies on its users to bring abusive behavior to its attention, then it determines if the reported posts should be removed. The platform is often slow to respond even to urgent reports, and regularly allows malicious content to spread and gain traction before it gets removed ― if it gets taken off at all. There are many reasons why victims of sexual assault do not report the incidents to police immediately or ever, including fear of retaliation, shame and, in many cases, the likely lack of consequences for the perpetrators. Trump himself has a long history of suggesting that women who do come forward to accuse powerful men of abuse aren’t telling the truth. Here’s a rundown: Trump has denied numerous accusations against himself going back decades. Jessica Leeds once sat next to the future president on an airplane in the early 1980s. Shortly before the 2016 election, she told The New York Times that Trump had groped her breasts and put his hand up her skirt. Trump denied the story. When it came out that Ivana Trump, the president’s first wife, said in a 1990 divorce deposition that he once raped her, he denied the incident took place. (She later reversed her story. She said she confided in close friends, family and authority figures at her school and church about his actions for more than a decade. But Republicans want to smear Ford, and say the story is a lie. So Graham is willing to smear doubt on Ford, say she is a liar. I have been reading about Brett Kavanaugh. He now states he kept detailed calendars when he was 17 years old. And that he will give them to the US Senate. Proving that he did not attempt to rape Christine Ford. Therefore, there is no need to hold any further hearings: Christine Ford is mistaken: if someone tried to rape her, it was not Brett Kavananaug. The diaries prove it. Beyond a reasonable double. Why he waited until now to provide the calendars is a question: did he need the additional time to write the calendars, while he waited for Ford to accuse him? ABC News QUINN SCANLAN,ABC News 7 hours ago A top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee said the woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault is "a credible witness" who has been subject to death threats since coming forward with her allegation. “I think Dr. Ford has come forward understanding what she was going to face,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said of Christine Blasey Ford to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on “This Week” Sunday. “I think it really speaks to her credibility at this moment. What in the hell did she have to gain by doing this?” “At this point, she's faced death threats. Her family has been moved out of their home. They're worried about the safety of their children. They're worried about security at the hearing,” the Illinois senator said. “You know, when you take a look at this in honest terms, I believe that not only Judge Kavanaugh, but certainly Dr. Ford deserves a fair hearing.” Ford's lawyers and the Republican leadership of the Judiciary Committee reached a tentative agreement Saturday evening for her and Kavanaugh to testify Thursday about her allegation, multiple sources familiar with the talks told ABC News. Durbin said questions about the nominee’s possible high school drinking are “certainly relevant to the whole conversation. Dr. Ford has said that [Kavanaugh and another male teenager with him] were stumbling at the time that this occurred. And there have been a lot of things said about the alcohol that was consumed by the judge as well as by others in his school. That has to be part of any relevant questioning.” Ford told The Washington Post that Kavanaugh and the other male teen were "stumbling drunk" at the time of the alleged assault.
