LA County's View of How to Prevent AIDS Step one: Close down testing clinics: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/20...n-by-la-county-.html Doucebags! Let's see - there have been somewhere around a handful of AIDS cases in porn since AIM opened. Go to Rame.net and click on "dead pornstars" and you can find a whole lot that died of HIV before AIM was operating. When AIDS first burst out in LA, it was pretty amazing how devastating it was. A friend of mine - a lesbian - lived in this neighborhood in the Silverlake district of LA that was almost all gay - guys heavily into the whole bathhouse scene. Within about a year, all of her gay male friends on that block - a whole lot of guys - were dead of AIDS. But, yeah, LA County is doing the right thing by closing down this clinic. Fucking shitheads!

That piece of news had me scratching my head. We are talking about a non-profit clinic that test individuals for a wide variety of STD's in the hope of preventing the transmission of diseases and at the same time educate people on the dangers of STD's. Lets close it because they don't have the right permit. I'll be curious to see what comes out in the next few days or weeks. I smell a rat but I'm not sure if it's political or something else. Long live the Brown Coats.

Wow. This is typical soccer-mom/safety-mom stuff. With an (un)healthy dose of Jesus too. I suspect that a lot of the motivation behind this is a desire for old-time justice. You get AIDS by being a bad (i.e. sexually active) person. The same argument has been used for generations about pregnancy out of wedlock. I'm a bit tipsy (i.e. shitfaced...) right now, but you Americans who are reading this need to realize that you are in danger of becoming overrun and run by these religious nuts. Canada is just slightly better, but the nuts here get all moist at every victory in the U.S. Not that this is a good example, but on the CBC website they had a story about a guy who took money from people to plow their driveways and then he didn't show up. Several commenters to the story suggested that Canada's lack of death penalty for failure to perform according to a contract was the problem. I commented on the website that I was concerned with the call for the death penalty for a minor offence. I concluded by suggesting that "right-wing Jesus-lovers" (that was my exact term) were probably wanking at the thought of hanging this guy. My comments weren't permitted, but later a guy a who used both the words "piss" and "shit" combined with a sense of violence were posted. Like I said, I'm a bit tipsy, but that bugged me. I think the same motivation is at work here. I think Frank Zappa gave us words to work by: "BEWARE THE FISH PEOPLE. THEY ARE THE REAL ENEMY." They are Frank. They are. Adopt a hungry lion today.

The thinking is probably that the fastest way to get rid of AIDs is for everyone who has it to die off. That reminds me that when AIDS was first getting national attention back in the 1980s, some of the religious groups said that God created AIDS to punish people for their sins. My understanding is that the porn industry clinic refused to turn over information on patients to officials from the state (and county?) on patients, claiming the information was confidential. So it appears the state (and county) are getting back at the clinic by denying the clinic a license to operate. The state (and county) says "former patients at the clinic are welcome to seek care at county clinics", "where people can feel safe -- the privacy and confidentiality are maintained.” But the officials who say the privacy and confidentiality are maintained are the same ones who were requesting information on the patients being treated at the porn industry clinic, and were refused that information. How likely are the county hospitals to refuse giving confidential information to state and county officals, who are funding those hospitals and clinics?

The latest news that I read on another forum is that AIM will reopen it's door today or tomorrow. By law they are allowed to do that during a certain period. As far as I can tell from the article. AIM was refused a permit because the name on the lease does not match the one the use on their site. Long live the Brown Coats.

I hope they get it reopened, though governments thrive on technicalities, whether it's being anal about them or just saying "Fuck it" and looking the other way. Considering they offer a service that at least slows the spread of AIDS somewhat (let's be honest, there's only so much you can do with monthly testing) they are probably a vital part of the community, even if that community is made of up porn actors.
Though I wasn't around when AIDS first started appearing in big numbers, I think at least from a historical perspective, the way the federal government first responded is truly horrifying. Here was a brand new, never before seen disease and basically nobody knew anything about it except that at first seemed to be confined to drug users and the gay community...so they go "Uh, we don't give a shit." They didn't make any public announcements, try to warn people, or even have Reagan fucking mention it until 1985. WTF! I blame this early inaction for not just a quicker spread of the virus itself but all the conspiracy bullshit--that it doesn't actually exist, it's a government bioweapon, HIV doesn't cause it, just touching someone can transmit it, etc. And there's still a ton of stigma around it like no other disease; try holding a protest with a sign that says "Thank God for breast cancer" or that "Heart Disease Cures Fags." "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove Edited on Dec 11, 2010, 01:56am

Yes, this has a stinky smell to it. Rather than shut the clinic down, they could have given them another opportunity to get the license they said was missing. The religious zealots in the US are part of the country's history going back even before it had fought its way into nationhood. The great irony is that they originally came here to escape persecution, but it's their progeny who have turned into the persecutors of others in the "land of the free." They're the reason for the temperance movements that led to prohibition, which turned out to be quite a fiasco. You could look at domestic politics in the US as basically a fight between the religious zealots and the more moderate to "liberal" and secular thinkers. The pendulum swings one way and then back the other. It swung to the left in the '60s and '70s, then to the right in the '80s, then left in the '90s, and then very much to the right (it seemed, anyway, thanks to the media Bush lapdogs) during most of this decade. And then it swung back and we got Obama rather than PALIN/McCain. It's scary. Personally, I don't have anything against religion, but it often gets abused by enough of the "believers" who wind up making it an excuse to for being intolerant and power-hungry. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.
