Tablets.

I'm interesed in getting myself a Tablet and I was curious to know what some of you guys and girls have and what you could suggest. Be advised that I am not considering an Ipad because I find them way too expensive. Does anyone use any Tablets with a 7" screen? Long live the Brown Coats.

I've used a Kindle Fire (not HD) before, and I liked it. It was big enough to hold decently far away and still read, but not so big that it felt unwieldy. If you're going to go for a 7" tablet and don't want an iPad, I prefer the Nexus 7 to the Fire HD, and those are really the only ones worth getting.

A relative just got the Nexus 7. It has an impressive screen, low price, seems to have lots of capabilities.

But the new Kindle Fire is impressive as well.

But I don't own either of them. I'm still window shopping. But with me, that can take years.

I bought an Asus EEE Transformer Prime 10" tablet. Personally I wouldn't enjoy a 7" tablet. The screen's just too small. I really like my Asus. It's great to watch TV and movies on, it works fine as a radio with Pandora and browsing the internet is quite enjoyable as well. Pictures are gorgeous on it and it's an excellent e-reader as well.

The Asus EEE Transformer Prime 10" tablet is more than $400, plus more than $100+ for the mobile dock, if you want that as well.

The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire are $200 each.

So the price difference is large.

The amount of tablets is near the amount of smart phones and just as many variations.

Things to consider in order on my priorities:

1 Battery Life
2 Wifi and or 3G
3 Storage
4.Screen size.
5.Cost
6.Charged by and or docking or USB
7.OS
8.Droid compatible
9.installed Applications
10 Warranty and returns.

These would be my top 10 of things to look for there are more but this is where I would start.

Then before buying look up reviews. Since 2007

I got a Kobo Vox 7" tablet/reader last Christmas for a gift, decided very quickly that 7" was too small for me and upgraded to a 10.1" Acer Android tablet, and still found the screen too small for my liking. Others find the picture and movie quality on these tablets just great, but for me, it has become a glorified reader and a quick late-night way of looking in on Porn Users and that's about it. If I ever buy anything portable again it will be a lap top.

I got my mom a regular Kindle Fire a few months ago and she loves it. She has a work laptop she can use for most internet needs, but she uses the Kindle Fire now. On the screen part, she is mid-60s and I was worried about her eyesight. She says the screen on it is easier for her to see than her work laptop. I have only used it a few times and it does seem to be a really nice alternative to a laptop. I also bought her an Amazon Prime subscription with it. She uses the "library" function and borrows books from Amazon using the Prime account and she watches several old, classic shows, they offer for no extra charge with the Prime membership. She uses it more than any of her other technology gadgets. She has the laptop, an Android phone, but I would say she uses the Kindle Fire more than both of those combined. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

^ I guess what it boils down to is resistance to change. I never thought that day would come because I always liked the new.

For instance, I attempted to read Time Magazine on my tablet .. hated the experience. Played a couple of sample movies from VideoBox .. hated it!

Am not the type to play "Angry Birds" or "Solitaire" very long these days, or watch "YouTube," so 7" and 10" are good for one thing (for me): rather than hold a five hundred page in my aching, straining hand I can now prop up my Kobo Vox or Acer tablet against a pillow and read without a strain on eye (because font can be adjusted) or wrist. I must say even then it took a bit of getting used to reading this way but now I do more reading than I have during the past ten years. Thanks, Kindle and Kobo for that. Sorry, didn't mean to butt in on your conversation with Pat please continue on!

I bought a 10" LePan II (Android OS) recently. Quite a good deal on Amazon. If buying for the first time I'd get the 32gb SD memory and case as a package, all for less than $300US. I'd also join the LePan users forum first.

Thank You everyone for the great stories and suggestions. You have helped me along. I think I will look at the Nexus 7 or the Kindle HD 7". I would love to get the 8.9" Kindle Fire HD but we're talking 100$ more for that one and I don't know if I'll get that much more out of the bigger screen. I think cost may the the main deciding factor because the least expensive Nexus 7 I have seen is 249$. Long live the Brown Coats.

The $249 Nexus 7 is the 32GB one. There is a 16GB one that only costs $199. I know you can get that one in the US, so maybe you can get it in Canada, too?

I went to Costco in Quebec, Canada and the going price for the 8GB version is 249$. I checked with futurhop and Best Buy and they both don`t seem to carry the 16GB version so I`d have to get the 32Gb model which is about 270$ before tax. It would be possible to buy a 16GB version from Amazon and the price is only 180$ but it is currently out of stock and no date is set for when it will be available.
Seeing as they offer the same model in stock for 288$ then my guess is that the 180$ model will never comeback in stock and seeing as it`s the main competitor to their own Kindle then it makes sense.

I currently still have some money from my winning at Amazon so I`d much rather buy it from them since I will save a lot of money doing that then going elsewhere. Long live the Brown Coats.

After looking around, it looks like Amazon and Best Buy both don't actually sell the Nexus 7 directly. Both companies have a program where they allow other people to sell through their storefront (Best Buy Marketplace and Fulfilled by Amazon), and that's how they're both selling the Nexus 7. Which would explain the mark up. Best Buy might end up carrying it, but Amazon probably won't because of the Kindle Fire.

Edit: And there isn't that much difference between the Fire HD and the Nexus 7 (the biggest being that the Nexus will receive it's OS updates direct from Google and the Fire won't), so if you want to spend Amazon money, I'd just go ahead and get the Fire HD. Edited on Dec 01, 2012, 11:14pm
