Question about file resolutions

I’m not technically-inclined regarding software, hardware or files so I can’t sort this one out on my own and hope that the best and brightest here can give me some guidance.

I’m into my umpteenth Videobox membership and one of my goals this time is to get higher quality versions of some of my favourite scenes that I already have. There are two possible options for downloads that fit what I want: WMV DVD and H.264. The specs come in fairly close.

I downloaded one scene in both resolutions to compare them:

WMV DVD: 300MB, 720x480, 2300kb/s, 30fps
H.264: 167MB, 640x480, 1500kb/s, 30fps

Subjectively they both look the same though the WMV file does appear to be a bit better. They both look pretty crappy but it is an older scene so that may be part of the reason.

From a technical perspective, which of these should I take? I’m inclined to take the WMV file because the numbers are a bit better and file size is not an issue. Is the substantial difference in file size the result of better compression or are there other factors?

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

(Two additional and only semi-related points: when HD is available on the one DVD per day I’ll definitely take that, and it has only been since I’ve been conscious about getting better quality scenes that I now realize that VB is really behind the curve in their offerings.)

I'm sure a much smarter person than me will better answer your questions but I believe that H.264 is a superior type of video file with better compression. They are usually a lot smaller than their WMV counterpart. I will always pick that type over WMV whenver it is offered but less because of the overall quality of the video but because the file is smaller and that means that I can download more and it will take less space on my hard drives.

I don't think a 720x480 video file vs a 640x480 video file will be significantly be better visually but maybe I am wrong. Long live the Brown Coats.

"but I believe that H.264 is a superior type of video file with better compression."

If the wmv file uses the VC-1 compression algorithms then it is every bit as good per data byte as h.264.

"Is the substantial difference in file size the result of better compression or are there other factors?"

No. File size is determined by video length and bit-rate, which are independent of the codec used.

As a general rule, the more bits/second (the amount of data per second that's required to render audio and video content) in a video file, the better the resulting quality. The other part of the equation has to do with how the data is compressed and de-compressed as some compression schemes are better than others.
Compressing data essentially relies on algorithms to pull data out with the goal of making big data chunks smaller. Doing this makes for better quality video while taking up less space which is particularly important for delivering video over the web.

When you are evaluating whether a format is the "right" one or not, the three main evaluating criteria are:
Size of the file Resolution and overall appearance of the file, compatibility of the file.

The problem is RA, or solution depends on so many variables.
Whether you have a NEW PC or Mac, what OS how much memory you have how well your computer will buffer Hi-Res?
Example I have this great scenes very hot workout I like.
It is 2GB in size and on my fast PC it is amazing details and smooth. I take that same file and put it on my 2GHZ 1gig
laptop with XP on it and I get buffering and lag issues.

There is allot of information on the net, and a million answers. Take a video you like and see how smooth it plays and look for artifacts, how fast it loads and how hard your pc works.

Me I find Mp4 and WMV to be the best on my PC. I edit with Mp4 and watch with WMV. I find WMV not very edit friendly.

Since 2007

My personal experience leads me to believe that H.264 (mp4) is better than wmv. I not only find that the picture is crisper but also that the mp4 file is considerably smaller than wmv. If I have a choice it is mp4 every time.

I'm surprised at the quality video I can get with MP4. It plays well on my Roku too. A true neck-lover.

Thanks for all the advice. based on your thoughts I opted to download the H.264 files. There may be a slight decrease in quality (but there also may not be) over the WMV files but the saving in file size makes the H.264's a better choice.

I'm with messmer on this one. From the files I've downloaded, the mp4s are as good as or better than the wmvs. The slightly lower file size is a nice bonus. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.
