Most Famous Porno of ALL TIME!

I was having an argument with my friend about the most famous porno of all time. Her opinion Debbie Does Dallas. I don't buy it. What do you think folks?

What is the most well-known/famous porno of all time?

I don't think any porn movie can be considered more famous than Deep Throat. I recommend you read up on the story behind Deep Throat to see just how famous it is even today and that is quite an accomplishment when you consider that it's over 40 years old. Long live the Brown Coats.

For gay porn the title goes to Boys in the Sand:

The box office results were rather large considering it was a gay porno. Variety reviewed the movie back in the day! "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)

Agreed! Nothing else comes close to the fame that movie received.

"Debbie Does Dallas" is certainly in the top 5 though. "Behind the Green Door" was also quite famous, because of the Ivory Soap / Marilyn Chambers scandal.

That's interesting, I hadn't heard about that movie until now. I guess it goes to show how uncomfortable mainstream media remains about homosexuality despite it being 2016. They rather gleefully chat about "Deep Throat" on morning chat shows these days. Recent politics show that we still have a ways to go on these issues as a nation (speaking here as an American citizen). "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I assume we're dismissing celebrity sex tapes? The Pamela Anderson and Kim Kardashian sex tapes are the Titanic and Avatar of pornography, respectively.

Its hard to argue Debbie Does Dallas. Even people who have never watched porn have heard of that movie and the proliferation of "Does" movies to this day speaks to the power of that name.

Behind The Green Door had a legitimate Hollywood premiere, with mainstream stars in attendance and everything (the 70s were weird), but I think it's the kind of movie now that only porn nerds are aware of.

Historically, it might ultimately be Deep Throat because of its tangential connection to the Watergate scandal that ultimately took down a sitting US president. They'll be talking about that, and deepthroat by extension, for a long, long time.

In the book The Other Hollywood, they discuss how those seminal 70s porn films like Deep Throat and Green Door might well have been the highest grossing films in the country in the years they were released, if accurate accounting were considered (which is next to impossible because porn was still mobbed-up and prone to heavy corruption). In some cities, people actually waited in line to buy a ticket to see Deep Throat and those movies stayed in theaters (Pre-VHS) for almost a decade. Listen to Buried At Sea.

How many people have actually watched those videos though? I personally don't know any women that have seen Pamela's video, and very few who have watched Kim K's. Through the documentary and other associated media, I know a number who have seen at least parts of Deep Throat. One can't argue with the notoriety of those sex tapes, but my guess is their viewing numbers can't compete with these classics just yet. If you were simply polling the younger generations, those sex tapes would probably come out on top, no pun intended, but once you factor in the remaining generations, I think the classics remain the clear winners for now, at least in North America. If you look at China, they have their own weirdly specific pornos that have swept the nation and are relatively unknown outside of China.

Then there is the amateur nature of the sex tapes as well, do they actually qualify as a "porno"? Pamela's video was stolen property — I'm not sure how the legality of that one even works. Tittyshake would have to weigh in on the spirit of her initial question about the qualification of amateur tapes within the field of entries.

True, it's fame has waned in recent years. Boy was it a big deal back then though, lol

It is somewhat shocking that pornstars are only now beginning to be no longer a taboo career considering those 70s releases. That said, I suppose it was in the 80s that right-wing social conservatives took over the Republican party (maybe someday the GOP will recover from that) and there was a moral backlash against 70s rather casual approach to sex. That all combined with the rise of AIDS and the fears associated with that too. Hopefully pornography will be less-and-less taboo in the near future. I'd rather naked people running around TV screens than throats being slit and heads exploded, but I digress. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

The dispute might be explained by differences in generational memory. Those of us who were around at the time have been programmed by the media to say it's Deep Throat. It was one of the first times that the media dared to tantalize us with discussion of a lurid film. It helped, of course, that the actor Harry Reems faced criminal obscenity charges over it.

Another, earlier one was I Am Curious (Yellow), though that was not really a porn film and was also a foreign film, from Sweden, so it didn't get the same notoriety. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Definitely meant more in the nature of produced films that aren't celeb sex tapes or amateur productions.

I think Deep Thorat is probably the most well known although Behind the Green Door falls closely behind. It's more recent but I would have to say Pirates is also up there. While it is a newer production it seems to be fairly well known.

It's also pretty interesting what we consider taboo. We can have a celebrity dry humping the ground in a dance video wearing basically nothing but as soon as the flesh of one single nipple is out it's OBSCENE NUDITY. Would Emmanuelle count?

My grandpa used to go watch what he called, "girlie picture movies", my grandma called them "dirty picture movies".

I mentioned Emmanuelle more in the "most famous" sense. I remember seeing it when I was really young. All I remember about it is a woman in a wicker chair touching herself. Also remember my mom, aunts, grandma telling us cousins not to dare watch it. Seems like everyone knew about it and if I remember right we watched it on HBO. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I remember back in the 1970s that Emmanuelle and Story of 0 were shown in mainstream, regular movie theaters.
They were considered softcore porn, as I recall.
But they were the only porn movies that I know of that played in regular movie theaters, and not just in porno theaters or art house theaters.

Both of those movies had high production values, and I still remember them fondly.

I don't think either movie would qualify as "The most famous porn movie of all time", but I think they were famous at the time of release, and still famous today.

Oh! Good point, I always forget about that film, but it was a HUGE deal and released both with and without its explicit scenes. Sadly, Digital Playgrounds isn't producing films with production quality like that anymore as far as I can tell.

Stupid Instagram with its damned nipple ban, ridiculous...

Agreed. One can't argue with Emmanuelle's success — it spawned how many sequels? It did seem to aspire to be more than simply "porn" though, so maybe that's why it isn't on everybody's mind as a famous porno. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

If we're bring up softcore, I still enjoy watching "Flesh Gordon". A good spoof on the original Flash Gordon serials of the 1930's. My understanding is they cut the hardcore scenes out to make it more mainstream. I don't think that worked. It still a hoot to see the Royal Flush, the Rape Bots and the Power Pasties. For myself the most amazing porno of all time was Fashionistas. This was Belladonna at her prime, Rocco S and a all star cast. A close second would be Without Limits and third place would probably be The Young like it hot. I just personally was not impressed by the Gold Age of Porn classics. They are ok. But I also understand they were basically mainstream movies and made a ton of money. Again these are my personal opinions. I think Titania and Kelly the Coed were also major break though movies. 1Ti 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
