Scoring reviews

I was wondering what some of your thoughts are on scoring reviews? I find that writing the text is easier than coming up with a score. There is no one size fits all answer for scoring, but I am curious to hear your thoughts.

One of the biggest dilemmas for me is scoring sites within different genres. For example, lets say I review an incredible network with hundreds of models, high quality content, and they are doing just about everything right. I will score that site close to 100%.

Let's say that I go to review a solo model site next. They are also doing just about everything right, but they only have one model, and they do not aspire to have more. A solo site like that will never be on par with a top network, yet they should still be recognized if their are on the top of their game. I might score an excellent solo model site close to 100% as well, even though they are very different from networks that score highly.

I try to stay out of factoring the type of content on a site into their score. I might join a site even if they only have a couple of scenes that I am interested in, but I won't take points because the majority of the scenes are not what I am looking for. I assume that there is a fan out there for every type of content, and try to stay unbiased.

How do you guys deal with these issues? Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

I tend to write all my pros, cons, and the body of my review before giving it a numerical score. As I look through the site and what I've written, I'll have a decent idea about what I score I want to give. All site reviews should take into consideration certain immutable factors, like design, ease of use, technical quality, and the quality of the content.

The genre issue is not so big a deal to me. I think that reviews for a site are largely to compare it to other sites within the its niche. I try to gear my score to other sites I've seen in the niche, to give my impression. I try to list why I have that impression.

To use your example, a solo model site can easily outperform a major network with a hundred more models and a thousand times the content. Does the solo model post updates every day, do requests, do live events, have a blog, post candid shots? That's the kind of extras that set solo sites out in my mind. Networks may have more content and models, but exceptional solo sites are hard to do. They require a lot of time to photograph, edit, and post content. Then there's maintaining the website. Comparing a solo model site negatively to a network is a little unfair.

In my opinion, grading within the niche tends to balance those factors. No one seriously expects a solo model site to outdo a network for variety or amount of content. But if the solo model works her butt off to provide great content, bonus features, and extras, isn't that more deserving of a high rating than a network who just routinely churns out good material? "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

I usually do like Loki and wait until I have filled out all the three sections of the review before putting a score. I already have a general idea of what it will be but I thinks it's good to re-read the pros and cons to see if the score I'm giving the site match.

I have yet to find a site that deserved a perfect score because I am always able to see cons even if they are minor so by default the site can still be improved. In fact some time I think that some of the sites that I awarded high 90 scores could get their score reduced because some of the cons are more annoying now then when I did the review. Long live the Brown Coats.
