WB’s New ‘Superman’ Film Reportedly Will Feature A Black Clark Kent & Could Be A Period Piece

When it was announced that JJ Abrams was set to produce a new “Superman” film with acclaimed writer Ta-Nehisi Coates set to pen the script, the reports said that the film would actually include a Black actor as the superhero. But without much more information, fans were a bit confused. Does this mean Henry Cavill would continue as Clark Kent and a new actor would take the role of Calvin Ellis, a Black character from the comics that is another version of Superman from the multiverse? Or is this new film going to be a full reboot? Well, according to THR, we are getting a better idea about what’s going on.

The report claims that the “Superman” film that is being written by Coates and produced by Abrams is currently in the early stages of finding a director. And it appears that Warner Bros. is interested in finding a Black director for the film, with Abrams most likely sticking to his producer role. Who the studio might hire is still a question, but the hunt is on. However, what we do know is the film is likely going to be a full reboot of the character and will exist in its own universe.

THR says the script that Coates is currently working on probably won’t be ready until the end of the year, but the plan, as of now, is to have “Superman” exist in its own universe, not connected to anything from the Snyderverse or even “The Batman.” In fact, the report claims the film might be a 20th Century period piece. But is this going to be a story about Kal-el, aka Clark Kent? The answer seems to be yes, as the script that Coates is crafting is said to feature the classic version of Superman, hailing from Krypton and coming to Earth.

Honestly, this is definitely the way to go, as it means the “Superman” film that Coates is working on isn’t just about Black Superman. It’s Superman, just played by a Black actor. And it appears that WB isn’t interested in being beholden to what Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder did with the character in the past, which means Abrams and Coates can craft a story that isn’t shackled by continuity. It’s hard not to be optimistic about this.

Obviously, if the script isn’t going to be finished until the end of the year, filming won’t begin until well into 2022 at the earliest. So we’re still quite a ways away from seeing this new “Superman” film. But if WB does this right, we could be in store for something special.

Recall how Halle Berry's blackness was toned down by a sizable snow white wig when she was Storm in the first X-Men yarn?

As a comics fan, I find it hard to be optimistic about any new DC movies. A few were good, most weren't. I don't care if Superman is played by a white actor, a Black actor, or even a woman. If it's a good script competently directed it should be a decent film. JJ Abrams being involved diminishes my hopes for this project. The last comic-inspired movie I enjoy was Wonder Woman with Gail Godot.
Thought the story was good, enjoyed the special effects.

But I don't really like most comic book movies.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) with Chris Evans was also a fine movie. But the follow-up movies with Chris Evans were not as good. The plots were confusing: America was not longer the hero of the movie, because the government had too many villains and hidden agendas that were evil. So Captain America, instead of fighting German Nazis, was fighting American Nazis and other secret societies. Also the fantastic inventions of the first movie (the submarine, the jet airplane, etc.) were powerful and interesting. I didn't care for the inventions of the follow-up movies, didn't have the same impact or inventiveness as the first movie.

Just my opinion, of course.

You just like movies where superheroes fight Germans. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

Here's my take on the subject of re-imagining films icons.

Why do we have to have a black James Bond? Why do we have to have a black Superman or a black Batman? I've been hearing that B.S for decades and I've yet to hear the reason why. I know that people know the name James Bond, Superman or Batman and this way the producer doesn't have to come up with a new name for their character but here's where I see the problem inherent in re-imagining a well established character.

The audience for those movies already know what the character looks like and while they may accept the new version. Other than the race of the character. What is different if he happens to be black? Is he going to have a different back story? If yes, then he isn't actually going to be Superman other than in name? Is he going to fight racial injustice then how exactly is he going to do that? Are we going to have a scene where a black Clark Kent gets harassed by a bunch of racist men and he then kicks the shit out of them or how about a scene where he gets pulled over because he's driving a nice car while being black but later saves the life of the racist white police officer who stopped him then repents and is no longer racist.

Excuse the following expletive but FUCK ME. I am beyond tired of film producers using their asses to come up with idiotic ideas instead of actually creating something new that we can talk about for years to come.

Is the character going to be any better if the gender or race is different and that is ultimately why news like this make me both sad and angry because the answer is obviously no. Long live the Brown Coats.

"Into the Spiderverse" introduced Puerto Rican/Black Miles Morales as Spiderman to replace white Peter Parker. Black Falcon has taken over being Captain America. In the comic books Black Roddie Rhodes was Iron Man for a time.

Comic books have tried to be at the forefront of major social issues. They haven't always done a good job of dealing with those issues, but they tried.

I'm sure non-white kids would like to see someone like them be the main hero instead of just a sidekick for a change.

I agree with pat362 that it would be nice to see some new things in movies instead of just reboots, sequels, and extended universes. But reboots, sequels, and extended universes are pretty much sure ticket sellers, so they will continue to glut theaters for a long time.
