Tecnical Question re screen resolution I'm not very technically savvy, and I looked for some information here but found nothing. Is there a direct correlation between a clip's bit rate and the screen dimension? Some clips might have a 1200kbps bit rate and dimensions of 720x480, or something like that. I realize that the higher for both numbers the better, but what does each mean and are they related at all? Could you have a high bit rate (1700kbps) and a really low screen dimension and vice versa? Thanks M

We've started a few threads about this topic; "What do you consider 'HD' Quality?" and "Bitrates!" are probably the best ones thus far. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? They are completely unrelated numbers. You can have a high resolution/high bitrate video, a low res/low bitrate video, a high res/low bitrate video, or a low res/high bitrate video. You start with the resolution, that defines the maximum amount of detail that can be in the scene. A 1280x720 video has almost 3 times the number of pixels as a 720x480 video, so it can provide that much more detail. An uncompressed video achieves the maximum video quality, but for a 720p video runs at an insane 664mbps, or 100 gigabytes per 20 minute scene! All the compression schemes lose quality, and there is no definitive answer as to how a scene looks at a given bitrate, there are too many factors involved. Generally speaking, the higher the bitrate, the closer the video is to the source material. You can mix and match any bitrate, any resolution you want. They generally go together, though. You can have a low res / high bitrate video but because you cannot achieve better quality that the resolution dictates, it's a waste of disc space. You can also have a high res / low bitrate video but it's going to look like crap, there's no point to it.

Just for fun, here's the most insane bit rate I ever got in a 30 minute clip: 1280 x 720, 20224 kbps! Size of the file: 1.85 GB! This was only yesterday. Needless to say, it didn't stay on my hard drive once I watched it. :-)

It can get tricky to get started with video editting, but files like that are a call for doing just that. I've gotten a few files with an 8,000+ bitrate and thought that was way over the top. Re-ripping 'em down to a "mere" 3000 saved a lot of space and allowed me to keep the file. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Sometimes the numbers given is maximum bitrate, or other times it's just flat-out wrong. What you describe is an 8mbps file, and at 720p should be pristine for a porno. Anything less you see more and more compression artifacts. With hard drives at 8 cents per gigabyte, if it's a clip worth saving, I'm lucky to say I can afford the 16 cents to keep it in pristine quality. ;) But that's just me.

If you really want to know the true facts about a video file, download a program called 'mediainfo'. It gives you max res, vid res, sound bit rate, video bit rate, codecs used, etc etc. It's great to see all the info provided. As far as the question asked, all can be mix and mashed. However, I found that the best compression that creates a great polished video is videos at 1280 X 720 at around 4000 kbps. The files are not too big and they give great detail while providing awesome playback on huge lcd screens with the whole screen being used as well (no letterbox on top or bottom). However, I have come across many different res and bitrates that still give off good playback. For instance, a scene at 640 X 480 but using 16:9 in the compression at a bitrate arounf 2000 kbps will usually fill the whole screen with no letterboxes and still look good. It's really all about the compression process and codecs used that provide the overall outcome. But, I've found something in the middle (1280 X 720, not 720 X 480 or 1920 X 1080) with a bitrate around 4000-6000 kbps look extremely great. My 2 cents... Sexted From My iPad

Thanks all. This was helpful. The reason i asked was that I recently joined Hustler and found that the video quality is mediocre in many of the files and wanted to better understand the technical stuff before I make any comment on it.

Did you download media info and check out the details? I really think you should and see what this program can do. It's free and really helps to better understand video attributes in all aspects. Sexted From My iPad

I did, but these days I'm such a Luddite that without the technical knowledge to back it up it isn't a big help. Sad to say, but I think I'll just have to report on raw numbers and then make a subjective judgment as to the quality. I appreciate the tip though. Thanks. M
