Ever been in a porn set? Has anyone actually been in a porn set? I often wonder how do they make porn. Any difference than making a regular movie, other than the obvious sex part? Do they need to remember lines? How does the director direct the porn stars? Any documentary about this? | |

I have been on set with Gracie Glam, Proxy Paige, Allie Jordan, Tweety Valentine and Sativa Verte. I have never been on a mainstream set so I can not compare the two. When we are shooting for certain sites the models and talent do have lines to remember. Usually when the model is in the make up chair the photographers assistant goes over the lines to the skit they will be preforming. We do have a story written out for them but sometimes they kind of go off on their own and make things up. If it fits with the story line we just let them do it but sometimes we have to reel them back in. The photographers do direct them because they have usually been doing it a lot longer than the models. One thing you hear constantly while they are shooting is "point your toes" the models seem to forget that one. I hope this gives you some of what you are looking for. They had a documentary about the Porn Industry in California on HBO (I believe) not too long ago and, as I wrote in another place, it turned me off to such an extent that I couldn't enjoy my "fantasies" for a couple of weeks. The so-called Managers are pimps, the "directors" in this day of Gonzo just tell the models: okay, I want five minutes of missionary, five minutes of cowgirl, five minutes of reverse cowgirl, five minutes of anal (if she'll do it) ending up with a cum shot to the face for the climax. The job must be brutal for the guys, there they were, all sitting and standing behind the scenes, attempting to get/keep themselves hard .. a pathetic sight but necessary since most of the directors (and the public) appear to want instant sex nowadays. No time for a gradual warming up! Save yourself the trauma  and steer away from porn sets and from "behind the scenes" clips. They show all too graphically that it is all about money. We knew that all along, of course, but didn't need to be reminded.  | |

Though the word "documentary" might be a stretch, Showtime had a reality series (there's the problem!) about Seymore Butts called "Family Business" that ran for at least three seasons I think. I have yet to watch any of it for a number of reasons, but mostly because I usually enjoy watching his videos and I don't want to have another 'favorite' ruined because I made the mistake of taking a peek behind the scenes. This may also not be exactly what you're looking for since he does mostly gonzo POV stuff that is not exactly the mainstream but it still probably reflects a lot of American porn, at least stuff in the Valley. Interestingly the show's title is pretty literal as he does work with his family in the business of selling his videos and he's supposedly pretty close to them, though he has yet to get married or find a long term partner. I didn't watch Family Business with any regularity for the same reason you mentioned. I don't like looks behind the scenes and should have never watched the documentary I was talking about earlier. Too disillusioning. I remember one thing though, that Seymore was doting on a little boy. Must have been by a short term partner. | |

Seymore's son was from his relationship with Taylor Hayes, if I remember correctly. Family Business had a lot of good BTS footage of porn sets. Seymore also would get contracted by Adam & Eve to do BTS of their big-budget shoots. I watched one of those movies. ALS Scan did their BTS of the Club Sandy shoot with Tanner Mayes a while ago. One of my favorite films is Kamikaze Hearts, which centered on the relationship between Tigre Minnett & Sharon Mitchell. Tigre had moved to behind the camera role from having been a performer and Sharon was in the midst of a wicked heroin addiction. It's a dark film, but there was something so deep about the 2 women at the center of it that I loved it. Sharon went on, of course, to not only kick her heroin addiction, but to become a doctor and to set up the porn industry's main HIV testing clinic. She's fucking awesome. There was also a documentary on PBS on Shawna Grant that I saw a bunch of years ago. And if you see John Stagliano's marathon 2 hour plus live shows, there's a lot of BTS material. My impression from all of that stuff combined - the porn biz is like the regular film biz - there are hacks and ripoffs and assholes and there are cool people - some very pro and organized and some rather fly-by-the-seat of their pants and their passion. In the end, people make porn and people are a varied lot - I kind of like 'em. | |

Yes, I think you're right; he has a son (should be in his teens by now, uh oh) from his Taylor Hayes days, when she was one of his earlier Tushy Girls. It seems pretty much every one of his serious relationships--women who do more than just fuck him on camera--usually end quite badly and with a total break-off, I seriously doubt he could ever contract a performer because she might walk out on him and never come back. Still, he has a steady stream of talent coming in so I doubt he has much need for a steady relationship.
I kind of like 'em too, plus I'm only watching them so there's not too much to complain about. To be honest I enjoy watching about 90% of what's in BTS footage, be it humorous, boring, or just plain crazy, but that remaining 10% is the stuff that cancels out whatever made all the other stuff somewhat watchable. I am talking about the creepy, depressing, or just plain nasty (I'm talking about personalities here) that can really hurt how you look at a performer or maybe just the business in general. I remember watching an ALS video once and like the vast majority of their videos it was BTS of a photo shoot, and then, basically out of nowhere, the model--pretty, sweet, and one of my favorites at the time--dropped a little bomb that has stuck in my perverted mind ever since. Now what she said could have been a joke, but it would have been an awful and really mean joke and she didn't even sound like she was joking. My point is that from now on every time I happen to watch a video of hers (she is a hottie) I keep thinking back to what she said and it flashes in the back of my mind like a great big neon sign. Hey, enjoying this video? Well, in case you forgot, here's that little thing she said to fuck with you every time you try to sit back and enjoy one of her videos! Ah ha ha ha! I used to work in a building that was used all the time to film porn movies, going into work was always interesting There is a documentary from 1999 called "Pornography - The Secret History Of Civilization", I havent seen it myself but a friend recommended it to me saying while a bit light on facts in some places, was actually quite an objective look at the industry. The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? Well, I've never been on a porn set, but I have seen photos from behind the scenes. It struck me as being very much like a non-porno movie or TV-show set. A LOT of people behind the scenes.
