Ransomware - the new threat Another good reason to skip tube sites is the threat of Ransomware. According to an on line article, (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/pc-virus-v...-else-004529732.html) "In the past year, hundreds of thousands of people across the world have switched on their computers to find distressing messages alerting them that they no longer have access to their PCs or any of the files on them. The messages claim to be from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, some 20 other law enforcement agencies across the globe or, most recently, Anonymous, a shadowy group of hackers. The computer users are told that the only way to get their machines back is to pay a steep fine." "Victims become infected in many ways. In most cases, people visit compromised Web sites that download the program to their machines without so much as a click. Criminals have a penchant for infecting pornography sites because it makes their law enforcement threats more credible and because embarrassing people who were looking at pornography makes them more likely to pay. Symantec’s researchers say there is also evidence that they are paying advertisers on sex-based sites to feature malicious links that download ransomware onto victims’ machines." These files will lock down your computer till you get it fixed. Don't pay the ransom - they won't unlock it. Just an FYI if you haven't heard of it. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee. Some real eyeopening stuff, JB. An I gotta add that the timing and absolute flawless ease of comprehension to which you put this together boosted the whole message beyond it's intent. Good job. While I haven't experienced exactly the aforementioned, I'd like to throw out there some equally crazy stuff going on with my computer: Since files are mysteriously disappearing from folders in my collective archives, and I'm unable to access so much stuff anymore because I'm told I "have to get permission" (Damed! permission from who?) This, as well as a myriad of other similar stuff going on, has left me with being convinced my administrative rights have been high jacked. (ring-a-bell anybody?)  | |

I had this police virus about 6 months ago, it was a pain in the hole as it basically locked windows down but I removed it using method 3 in the following link, booting my pc with a kaspersky rescue disk. http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-police-trojan/ If that hadn't worked I would have just formatted the C:/ drive, its things like this is the reason I only put windows and application files on C:/, not data. | |

I got one a few weeks ago from a photo link, this exactly happened and took all my skill to remove it. Spent 3 hours going through the registry and other stuff eventually removed it, I do not get viruses cause I do not go to sites like tubes etc, however I was a dumb ass and followed a link to a picture example that was embedded before I could notice. Noscript plugin for firefox is like a condom for the internet. It basically blocks all Javascript and only allows what you want to allow to run. As an added benefit is that it blocks most ads. Spybot search and destroy has a blacklist feature that blocks most unwanted malware from installing. Never had a problem with viruses or malware but I have dealt with it when fixing other people's computers. | |

Hi, I went the whole way with method 3 but the infection was dealt with by malwarebytes once I was able to get access to windows (which is the really infuriating part of the virus) Although it was a bit of a pain it did the job and the instructions given on the link were accurate (unlike a lot of software instructions) and most importantly it did the job. At least I have the kaspersky recovery disk now in case I ever get hit by this crap again. | |

I use Norton. How will these solutions interact with my Norton? I hate setting up a protection solution and buying two years of coverage just to change to another one. I'm hoping the solution would not disturb my continued use of Norton. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee. Been hit twice, first time my gf, no antivirus etc on her pc...real pain to fix but fixed it...brought norton... 6 months later my pc locked out...couldn't find a way of fixing it (great job norton) so brought a new harddrive (know I could of wiped it but one day ill try and get my files back) | |

I hear you loud and clear. My PC currently is in the same troubled waters. No lock-ups, or freezing of the sort, but just all kind of unfamiliar stuff going on that just ain't right. My big concern is having to do with my administrative powers seemingly stolen. I base that on evidence I perceive having to do with "users," and sharing. I can't get rid of the devils because I'm denyed permission" ....Can you believe that? I bought and paid for this PC yet, and God only knows how many other trespassers are using it. All of which I suspect is the result of a disturbing number of folders I had in storage that I'm now finding are now mysteriously empty. | |

The only guaranteed way to get rid of malware is to do a clean reinstall of windows. Copy any files you want to save to another hard drive and then do a fresh install of windows or whatever OS you are installing. This will erase everything on the hard drive you are installing windows in. After installing the OS get an Antivirus, I use ESET but you can always download Microsoft security essentials which is free for anybody who owns windows. Make sure it is from microsoft.com and not any other site so you don't download a fake Anti virus. Then scan the hard drive you backed your files in and delete any .exe files. If you don't want to be infected again, never install anything that that does not come from a well known legitimate site. Turn off Java or use Noscript plugin when visiting new sites. Once you get infected there is no way to make sure you got rid of everything. Most malware are designed to stay hidden and disable popular anti virus software. You have to assume that your computer is compromised and anything on it like passwords can be taken. After reinstalling change any passwords you may have used. | |

Thank you very, very much, Holliganzo, for that sound advice. However, Being the novice that I am, my suspicions actually has also been along the same lines of what you've so thoughtfully posted here... its just that unless somebody who's trustworthy, and really knows what he's doing, personally gets a handle on my problems and do whatever necessary to get rid of these vermin-intruders once and for all. I've had my Operating system restored and stripped clean more than once, only to have the intruders re-appear. Unfortunately, seemingly most PC attackers are smart, an' i'm further convinced they simply set-up-housekeeping once they get a foothold in the right places .....and at sometime during this invasion overrun your virus program and take command, thereafter easily getting a free ride anywhere they wanna go. | |

Once the problem is dealt with you can uninstall anything you needed to put on the pc to repair it go back to using norton again (although I have to say I'm not particularly a fan of Norton) | |

Well DBAN (Darik's boot and nuke) http://www.dban.org/ will thoroughly clean a hard disk but its not something that you would do lightly. It erases all data on a hard disk and overwrites it, once thats done you reinstall windows. Be warned it can take ages, the one time I've personally used it it took about 10 hours iirc. | |

Many thanks, Reveen, for bringing up this important and timly piece of information..... I'll likely forward this to my computer friend who's been servicing this computer, as well as previous ones I've owned. As with all computer savvy and technically gifted guys, however, working his day job and answering the call of selected others slices his time into far too many pieces. He's good, though, so I hang in there and wrestle with the others for those pieces. The problem's now compounded , unfortunately, because of my recently having to move outside the limits of his traveling distance, I'm afraid my only future option for his help will have to be done remotely. | |

A less frightening version of this is the ads one sees on porn sites. It has a flash video of a fake progress bar depicting the user's computer's file being deleted and words like, "warning your computer has been infected, virus detected, files being deleted" are displayed below it. On clicking it, either malware enters your pc or loads o popups open up. This has gotta stop too. [ SIG Spam Removed by PU Admin ] | |
