Name recognition in porn

I was just thinking how the biggest names in porn today, such as Met Art and DDF, still don't seem to get the same name recognition among average guys as companies like Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler. I imagine that if most of my friends were polled, they would sooner think that Met Art is a museum in New York and DDF a pesticide like DDT, rather than realize that they are giants in today's world of porn. Why so little name recognition in pop culture?

Also, I bet if you polled the same group, they would know porntube.com and xhamster.com right away. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

Probably true but most of these people, if they don't know porn, probably don't make it past the first page or two of a google search for "porn". It's only once you get tired of the endless searching and mediocre quality on tube sites and start looking into pay porn that the top of the heap start to emerge and rather quickly. Since most people aren't into paying for porn I'd say that porn name recognition doesn't really matter much to the general public and companies like DDF are better off spend their advertising bucks at a more select demographic.

It was so long ago, I don't remember how I finally discovered "The Best Porn". Glad I did. It not only has lead me to the great sites Like 21Sextuary and DDF, but also sites that are not out to rip you off. I'm sure I wasn't looking for a porn review site, because I didn't know they existed. It may have been that a site I belonged to had a notice that they were reviewed and recommended by TBP, so I took a look. Warning Will Robinson

All I can say for sure is thank the overlords of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro for watermarks--I would be lost trying to figure out where half the smut I watch originated! (I guess if it doesn't make you go blind, seeing all that pussy, tits, and ass can scramble your brain. )

The thing is those three magazines are practically anachronisms in the age of the web and digital everything. I don't have much desire for print porn, not even for bathroom reading or those interesting Playboy interviews. And I won't miss them, despite growing up in one of the last generations to have its The Treasure of Sierra Madre moment discovering an abandoned porn mag in the woods or an old building (there are a lot of these stories and they're always hilarious to me). I mean Playboy has become more of a clothing brand and logo to naive underage girls seemingly forgetful that it was founded by this guy.

Now, despite porn being "everywhere," who can or will honestly recognize any of the bigger names in Internet adult entertainment? It's one thing to know about Playboy or Hustler, but how many will publicly admit or even understand "Hell yeah, EverythingButt!"

You now have at least a site or two for basically every consensual taste or turn-on imaginable or practical, but conversely a greater curtain of silence around who's really into what anymore. For example, everyone who knows me understands I like women; a simple majority of them know I have nothing against porn or its entertainment value (or just privately assume it since I'm a guy); more than a few know I regularly watch it; but very few know I'm genuinely into the dirtier stuff or what that even constitutes. The reason why Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler have a much bigger name recognition than any porn site is that they all precede the internet by decades. Playboy is 61, Penthouse is 48 and Hustler 40. How old is the oldest porn site? Is it even active? Long live the Brown Coats.

I don't know about the oldest porn site but probably only a few minutes older than the first site since we seem to pervert every form of communication we've ever invented. So I can only assume we eventually did something like this with the telegraph. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? You guys have a way of making me feel old; sometimes. I remember my friend taking me to his families garage, where his older brother kept his Playboys, and there was Marilin Monroe. It would be many years later before I would buy my first copy and then discover Penthouse. It was Penthouse that gave me the taste for more exotic settings and the pleasure of having a fantasy story line to go with the photos. Maybe that is why I prefer photos over video.

Well Playboy and Penthouse had the market to themselves for so many years. A few other magazines showed up, but the choice was few. Compare that to the multitude of porn sites.
Its hard to get noticed in a crowd. Warning Will Robinson Edited on Apr 13, 2014, 09:52am

I also think it was part of growing up in the pre-internet era that someone would find that legendary first Playboy, Penthouse, or Hustler, and show it off to all of their friends. Nowadays, looking at porn online isn't a shared experience, everyone usually does it alone. People are less apt to talk about their favorite sites, so there is less of an impact on pop culture. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

LPee23, I personally prefer that it's not a shared experience, at least in any public, real world sense. Who really wants to go a creepy theater or store to enjoy some porn? Now you fill your niche, at both greater quantity and quality, without having to look someone in the face.

And if we really want we can still share the experience on sites like this and others but with at least a modicum of anonymity and security never truly possible in the brick-and-mortar world. And I prefer it this way for a lot of things outside of adult entertainment too. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Oh, I'm totally with you. The only person I feel inclined to share porn with in person is my wife.

Then again, I have gone to strip clubs with friends and colleagues, and it's just been fun, not awkward at all. At the same time, strip clubs can't deliver on my personal tastes like porn can.

I'm not saying that the anonymity that the internet has given us is a bad thing at all - I love it. I'm just saying that the experience of finding your first Playboy or whatever and sharing it with your friends is not so relevant today with so much online porn, so therefore porn is making less of an impact on pop culture. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

It kinds of sucks in a way, because I consider finding that first Playboy and/or hardcore mag and then sharing it with friends to be one of those "Eureka!" moments of growing up. It was like that scene in Raiders where Indy found out where the Well of Souls was--you knew you had found something, you just weren't truly sure of its awesome power. An off-topic side note I'll drop in that may or may-not lift a few eyebrows.....
Owning and collecting Playboy Mags dating back to the 1950's .....hidden in my attic, away from the prying eyes of intruders.....all of which worked very well until the inquisitive 11-yr-old son of my then live-in girlfriend promptly searched them out.
It was only after my girlfriend and I parted ways that I discovered from each magazine, the centerfold, as well as other rare nude photos of that era's high-profile female figures .... had been all ripped out. ..... rendering my whole thirty-year collection worthless.
Some advice ...... never trust what a boy of early age will sneak-around and do. Edited on Apr 21, 2014, 02:51am

That's sad to hear, graymane, but kids are like truffle hogs when it comes to sniffing out porn stashes--it's like a sixth sense with them or something (them and girlfriends, wives, mothers...okay, basically anyone who you don't want finding it!).

Of course today a Playboy is practically literature compared to what's offered online, and a hard drive looks way less incriminating, at least until some kid plugs it in and immediately finds the porn. Although we're well known amongst enthusiasts of the niches we inhabit, rare is the 'square' who recognises abbywinters.com. Over the course of several years, I've casually met just one person who knew the site off the bat.

I've got a few shirts with the name and logo on it, at first I was worried I'd get weird looks if I wore them out, but after some time I can confirm they've never pulled so much as a sideward glance (so far as I know).

I think that is because, while there are definitely some good online porn sites out there, none IMHO have succeeded in revolutionizing an entire industry like, say, Playboy. When Playboy magazine started it was revolutionary to sell photos of bare breasted women to a mass market.

But there is, IMHO, no one porn web site that has revolutionized the industry in quite the same way. Instead it is the hi tech industry that has revolutionized the industry so as to permit the free distribution of explicit photos and videos. And the big players in hi tech--the search engines and smart phones, etc--certainly ARE household names.

In porn, "most successful" doesn't equal highest name recognition. I would bet that if you took a poll of average Americans of who the top porn star is, it would be someone that's not even in the top 20 of a sales-based list on an adult DVD site.

Playboy, Penthouse & Hustler blasted their way into mass consciousness over time with lots of mainstream news stories, while I can't recall MetArt, DDF, Twisty's, etc having ever been mentioned at all.

Playboy was at the vanguard of the Sexual Revolution that grew until it was flourishing in the 1960's, but it was never just about nude women. It was a lifestyle magazine for sophisticated urban males.

Funny how the Blue Fantasies web site started off with the same basic concept some 13 years ago or so, and then, through changes of ownership and management, turned into a nude model site until it finally stopped updating while it was a subsite of Twistys.

Playboy, meanwhile, took a long time to shake its concept of all-American-girl with perfect teeth and tan and stick-out titties. Now the Playboy content looks more like the other stuff you see on nude model sites, though the photo quality is usually superb. Seems that they learned from their students how to choose and present the models, but kept to their high image standards. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Ugh, "lifestyle" for "sophisticated urban males"--no, thank you.

I guess it could explain why I've always had so little interest in Playboy and its brand of rich, blonde beauty. It just sounds so vapid that it practically makes Larry Flynt seem like a philosopher king. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? It does make one wonder: If you're sophisticated, why would you need to pay for monthly advice from a smut peddler? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

@Drooler

I frequently read Slate.com--or skip through it looking for something to read, since at least half of it is insufferable bullshit about TV shows and cheap clickbait--and they have a blog called the Gentleman Scholar. It's an advice column that mostly covers minutiae no more pressing than how to "properly" wear dress clothes (as if there aren't enough goddamn pointless unwritten rules to worry about already) and other trivial concerns of the white collar office world.

Obviously, I'm not a fan--which is like saying RagingBuddhist isn't always a happy camper --or even advice columns in general, but to me the word "gentleman" is so often used as a polite way to say that you think you are better than others. And asking for advice on such a subject reads like a how-to guide of hubris. Sometimes people need to realize just putting on a suit and tie doesn't magically transform you into a better person. It may make you a better dressed person, but even that is overrated.

Again, when people are honest about what they really do, like Larry Flynt has generally been, and don't try to come off as something more sophisticated simply because they don't show those uncouth genitalia or have a column called "Asshole of the Month," then I have a lot more respect for them. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice.
