Do you see the stigma associated with legitiment porn lessen or worsen?

You're attending a family reunion wherein most of the relatives on either side are gathered to reignite the old and eagerly update the new happenings in their lives.
You approach a circled collection of aunts and cousins, as well as a sundry assortment of member invitees, all of whom are involved in animated chatter about events shaping their interests.
The chatter ebbs when you join in by piping-up with "hi ladies and gents, what's going on?"
Marie, who's bookkeeper at her local church, excitedly turns away from the present subject of conversation and with a broad smile blurts out "oh, Bob .... its so wonderful to see you again."
All heads turn in your direction when she continues with "I think we all would love to hear about what we've been missing that's going on with your great porn collection."

Everybody becomes frozen with anticipation awaiting your answers. So for the next hour you regale them with all the new stuff that's surfacing, as you see it, in the wonderful world of porn.

What? you say that never happens with you! ' Why do you suppose that Is?"

I say to you, guys , having read that .... "Will negative attitudes towards porn ever abate to the point where it doesn't create some level of uncomfortable tension among the masses in a normal environment?"

Short answer: "Not in our lifetime."

Slightly longer answer: Too many stigmas still associated with porn. It's not just another collection like stamps, coins and kitchen cozies. Most of the public still at least subconsciously attach any number of mental #hashtags with porn - pervert, sexual deviant, misogyny, having problems with the gf/bf, stalker, peeper, masturbation, etc. "Porn" is still a loaded word that ain't coming out of the closet any time soon.

Watching porn automatically is associated with masturbation and society is uncomfortable with any discussion of this sex act. It will be many generations before our society feels free to discuss this sex act sex openly. Warning Will Robinson

Exactly what I expected your answers to be like , guys.
Thanks for your informative input,

Although this thread may smack of a no-brainer, its my loaded opinion because of the abject absurdity of this ongoing, skewed belief that this basic need being labeled "perversion" only empowers the real belief that societal intellectual growth remains at an abdominal standstill.
How this bad-mouthing, mental garbage associated with labeling this practice of one submitting to this powerful impulse having reached this awkward dimension defies imagination.
Hence the label "perversion" and all its synonymic brethren going the way of this mental deficiency, and the putrid development borne of this acceptance needs to be "headlined" from time to time to put this sordid anathema back in perspective.
Welcome to my world.

I don't expect to see the opinions of the general public to change toward the more favorable when it comes to porn. I don't think the current porn industry deserves to be looked at in any positive light. In the 70's and 80's porn could wear the mantle of artistic creators because the bulk of the porn being produced had some actual artistic value. It was still hardcore porn but you could probably have edited out the HC part and retained a moderately decent movie. I'm not saying that it were all masterpieces but enough of them were good enough that most judges would not have had an issue with someone calling their porn movie an artistic creation. That more or less disappeared in the 90's for a variety of reasons and we saw a huge decline of artistic porn being replaced with just plain porn. You might call it the rise of gonzo porn. You still had a few studios producing artistic porn but most started to concentrate on the less expensive to produce gonzo style. It's only gone downhill since then to the point where most of what is now called artistic porn would have been discarded two decades ago as being crap.

For those reasons and the utter disregard the industry has toward it's performers makes me think that porn is now in the unenviable place of being a pariah to society. Long live the Brown Coats.

The Bible doesn't help. If you have read it, there is the story of a dead husband's brothers taking his wife, per an old Hebrew custom, to be their own, but the brothers cast their seed on the ground when taking her to bed. God saw this as a sin and they died for it. It actually is a good story, if you haven't read it. The wife finds her own solution to this dilemma. Which I found interesting because it involved committing another sin, that somehow God ignored. God has His own way of picking and choosing those who will suffer for their sins, according to the Hebrew and Christian Bibles.

Even if a person is not a Christian, this topic is passed down through generations as uncomfortable to discuss because of the power the Hebrew and Christian faiths held for so long. Internet porn has helped. Society can't ignore that porn is plentiful and popular. After-all internet porn created this forum, which is the second place I have felt free to discuss our use of porn openly. The first was my psychologist. Thank God for her. She was my first psychologist, and fortunately was a very wise person. I suspect she was wise before getting a degree in her profession. This forum is a small, but an important step. It has made a small crack that I hope will widen. I still feel it will take several generations before a comfortable discussion of this topic, in the company of family or friends will occur. I know there are people out there who you can discuss it freely. I frequent a gay coffee shop next to my laundry-mat, and I notice those around me feel free to discuss things us straight people would find uncomfortable. We could learn a lot from the gay community, if society freed itself from homophobia. Warning Will Robinson Edited on Jan 04, 2015, 05:57pm

Porn will always be limited to the "adult" world, plain and simple, it's not appropriate for the dinner table at a typical family gathering with kids around. For this reason and others, it will never be acceptable as part of a casual, "polite" conversation.

Then again, among many of the guys I hang out with, it doesn't have much stigma at all. Back when all those celeb pics were leaked last year, the topic came up with a couple of "respectable" guys at work, and before I knew it one was pulling them up on their iPhone and showing the other where to download them. The three of us stood around and flipped through them for at least 10 minutes.

I also still get together with a close group of guys from high school from time to time. Way back in the day, we used to go to the local Quickie Mart, get away with buying Hustler and Penthouse. So porn was never off the table as a conversation topic for us. Just a few years ago, we all went up to one of their cabins to party . It was a crazy time. The guy who owned the place flipped on some porn OnDemand, and it was pretty nice in the background of the party. We had this whole discussion about it, how guy X can't stand women using dildos in porn, and guy Y thinks the kinkier the better, not unlike some of our discussions here. It actually wasn't awkward at all. So, in the right company , talking porn can be awesome. But, that is with a very select group. We're not going to see it be polite dinner table conversation any time soon. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off. Edited on Jan 07, 2015, 01:51pm

I think in the scenario you mention it is taboo to talk about porn for the same reasons that any talk of sex is taboo in certain contexts. I'm not sure how specific it is to porn. If, for example, a couple had recently been on a cruise, they might talk a lot about their cruise at a family gathering. Such talk, however, probably wouldn't include a discussion of all the hot sex they did (or didn't) have on the cruise.

I actually do think the stigma associated with porn has dropped a lot and will continue to drop. But something can lose its stigma and still be a private matter. I see sex remaining a private matter for the foreseeable future. It's like money in that respect. There's no stigma associated with having a job and earning money, but one usually doesn't discuss one's salary details openly in a large gathering. It's not stigmatized but it's private.

Like the others, You bring up excellent points, David.
I think I have to conclude the consensus so far is running pretty much nose-to-nose in line generally with what you've just so thoughtfully conveyed.

BTW .....seeings you've been with us since '08 ,,, I would appeal to you to drop back in to see us more often.

Sorry to popup old subject. But it will be relevant for a long time I think.

My 2 cents.

The taboo is not about porn.
Not even sex.
It is about our private thoughts and fantasies.

Very few people can share who their inner self is.
So many cannot even say their true feelings to beloved ones. Even life expectations can be too personal for many to be shared.
Also in many cases candid leisure themselves can be perceived as not serious enough to be shared.
Therefore it is impossible to share thoughts socially considered so private.

I know hobbyist photographers who cannot do female shooting (clothed, candid pictures) because their wife cannot stand.

Everything that is too personal is difficult to share. Except in a safe environment (anonymous like this forum or under secretive seal of psychologist or with close and loving and open minded ones).

That won't change before meankind increases empathy and acceptance of difference.
