Audiophiles, I need your help!

Having just viewed the poll on sound systems, I thought, "Why not ask my fellow PUs?"

I've got a bunch of vinyl LPs, but no longer do I have a system to play them on! This is indeed a very sad state of affairs.

Making matters worse is my ignorance of what's available that is of good quality.

Anyone know? Something under the 100-watts-per-channel range would do, but nothing too tame, either.

Something decent to spin, say, "Live Cream" on. Thanks. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I'm not exactly sure what you're after here. A complete stereo system with a turntable? If that's the case, your options are only limited by your budget. It'd be hard to recommend anything unless we know how much you're willing to shell out. I would definitely suggest you do a lot of online shopping/comparisons. Also read user reviews for anything you're leaning towards.

If you've got serious budget concerns, and your computer soundcard has a line in jack, I would just go get a decent turntable and preamp so you can digitize the vinyl. That gives you the option to listen on the computer, load up mp3 players or make discs to play in any existing CD players you have. But even that setup depends on what kind of money you have to spend. If you do go this route, I can tell you that you might want to avoid the USB turntables - none of 'em I've seen have gotten good reviews. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I used to DJ a few years ago and know a bit about what turntables are great for a moderate user. If you want some advice on which turntable to get, just let me know and I can try my best to guide you in the right direction.

If this is what you are looking for, I can give you some suggestions to start right now:

Most turntables nowadays do not use a ground (some do though) and a standard 2 channel RCA jack. Therefore, you can just directly plug these in to any audio in, in any type of standard receiver that accepts audio in. Hell, you could even plug it directly in to your tv and listen to your turntable through there. However, if you just want to play some stuff without getting a standard receiver with amp and speakers, you can just get most 'boom boxes' (built in reciver, cd players, and speakers) at a decent price and most have a line in rca connection. They actually can be quite loud and I think that would satisfy your needs.

If you are looking to get these vinyl tracks to mp3, that can be done with most turntables just using windows media player by converting your dual rca jack to a single smaller jack that most line in's on the back of your computer comes with. Just make sure you get the single jack with double lines because that's stereo and and the single one is mono. I can go in to more detail if you are interested and a step by step guide if you need info on how to do this as well.

Any more questions? Don't hesitate to ask, I'll help ya out. Sexted From My iPad

This one is for Drooler, in recognition of his interest in music. I have no expertise on sound systems, but maybe this article on polka music and the Grammys is worth viewing.

Jimmy Sturr, winner of 18 Grammys for best polka album in the past 24 years, will no longer be eligible to win a Grammy for best polka album. The category has been eliminated from the Grammy awards.

There is an accompanying photo of Jimmy Sturr with the article. I don't know if there is a tear in Jimmy Sturr's left eye or not.

No more polka album Grammys for Jimmy Sturr

By JOHN ROGERS, Associated Press Writer

June 05, 2009

LOS ANGELES - It's enough to make any serious polka fan shove his plate of sausage aside, fling his lederhosen in the closet and go out and shed a few tears in his beer.

The waltz is over for America's Polka King, Jimmy Sturr, not to mention every other squeezebox-loving, ompah-dancing fanatic who followed the Grammy Awards each year just to learn whether Sturr would collect yet another trophy for best polka album of the year.

Moving to ensure that its awards show remains what it called "pertinent within the current musical landscape," the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced Thursday it is eliminating its best polka album category.

Although posters to Internet sites catering to polka fans (yes, there are such places) were outraged, Sturr, who is hailed by fans the world over as the King of Polka, was doing his best to take the news in stride.

"Sure I feel a little bad, but I'm grateful, man," said the 58-year-old musician who has won the best polka album trophy 18 of the past 24 years.

"The Academy did a lot, not only recognizing me but recognizing polka music," he continued. He added that the recognition gave him a chance to fuse polka with pop, country, rock and folk and broaden the music's audience as he worked with musicians such as Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss and Bela Fleck.

Still, he wasn't completely satisfied with the Academy's explanation that polka was attracting too few entries in its category.

There are millions of polka fans worldwide, Sturr noted, and hundreds of working polka bands in this country alone. They have taken your grandfather's music, he said, and merged it with Tex-Mex, rock, Tejano and other forms to create a distinctly American sound.

As Grammy-nominated player John Gora noted, one of his most popular polka covers is the rock band Genesis' "Follow You, Follow Me."

"And Phil Collins liked it," he said of the Genesis frontman.

For his part, Sturr said he suspects that if there were 20 people on the committee that recommended dropping his category, "19 of them have never been to a polka concert. "

Others speculated that Sturr's amazing record of Grammy wins helped do in the category.

"I think the fact that it was so dominated by one artist, that kind of killed the incentive for a lot of people to enter," said Carl Finch, whose Tex-Mex-Tejano-Conjunto-Polka fusion band Brave Combo upset Sturr to take the award in 1999 and 2004.

Sturr, meanwhile, says he has no plans to stop entering the Grammys, and will nominate his next album in whatever category he is allowed to.

That will be the folk music category, said Bill Freimuth, the Academy's vice president for awards.

Finch, however, worries that that kind of pigeonholing won't go down well with polka fans, who he says are already fed up with all the lederhosen and accordion jokes they must endure.

"It's not that the polka world's not used to it," he said of polka not getting enough recognition. "The polka world expects it. It's like, 'Yeah, the man did it to us again.'"

I have to disagree with one thing that GCode said. Unless something changed in the last year or so, turntable outputs aren't up to the same level other components are - that's why I mentioned the turntable with preamp. I know you can buy more expensive units, but the one I bought was around $30 and it does quite well for ripping. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Hey everybody. Thanks for the replies so far. I'll get into more specifics.

My primary interest is playing directly from vinyl. I have a stereo amp from the '70's, but it's so old that the internal wiring and circuitry seem beyond hope. Spent lots of time struggling to revive it. It puts out super distortion or nothing at all.

So an amp/receiver, turntable, and speakers are what I'm looking for. (And I do mean a component system; not a cheesy all-in-one.)

Any suggestions on brands and models? Thanks again. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Okay... maybe to get the ball rolling... and without a real price range in mind... I've always seen Kenwood and Yamaha as good bang for the buck brands. For the last 25 years or so, I've upgraded the components to a Kenwood and Yamaha system that still rattles the walls. It's not top end by any means - but the neighbors still complain like it is. Price needn't be the starting point.

And the next time I see someone parallel parking their audio system, I'll know it's you. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Thanks especially to RagingBuddhist and GCode for your suggestions. I'm thinking about an Audio Technica professional direct-drive turntable; it would run me $250, but it's got nice features, like pitch control, strobe, and a pre-amp. And though it's not top priority, it also allows computer input in case I want to churn out some MP3s off the vinyl.

I might not go so high on the power amp, but the speakers of course need to be solid. Still looking around.

Thanks again. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

For speakers, I'm a big fan of Creative Soundworks systems. My satellite/subwoofer system is about 15 years old and looks like the first generation Bose Acoustimass system. I compared the two side by side and, considering the Creatives were less than 2/3rds the cost of the Bose and sounded the same, I went with the Creatives. I just checked their website and, even though my system is long gone from their catalog, I'd say their lineup looks just as promising. Check out their Newton series. I have both a Numark and Stanton turntable. Both of these ripped to my computer just fine. The stanton turntable actually has an extra output exactly for this. Sexted From My iPad

Honestly Drooler, when it comes to turntables, almost any non belt driven table is fine. Just get a really good cartridge from ortofon or shure and almost any direct drive turntable would be perfect for what you want. I've found Vestax, NuMark, and even Stanton tables with a great catridge are just as good or even better than getting a Technics or higher end models. A good table that I've had great experience with and is good for the price is the Stanton ST-100. This is a straight arm but they have a S-Tone arm model too. Almost any TT model by NuMark is solid too. Sexted From My iPad

There's a lot of people getting rid of their high quality 80-90s hifi systems with very good turntables to get newer smaller MP3/internet ready systems, so there are some bargains to be made if you are willing buy used/second-hand?

Well, Drooler - my collection of LPs (about 700) - vinyl - is very precious to me - and I think that the main thing here is the gramophone/ or whatever its called in english -
In my opinion europeans have over the years been pretty good here - so I'd say go for Lenco Research Acustic (Swiss)or maybe the best os all (oh, yes, it's danish): Bang & Olufsen.

Browse through this:

and this e-bay:

AND any good hi-fi system/reciever/amplifier will be able to do the job....

Oh yes, BTW: The second Cream-album "Disraeli Gears" makes things hit the fan, too.... "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" Edited on Jun 10, 2009, 10:12am

A grammophone is (well, was, mostly) a phonograph to Americans. I think it probably means especially the turntable, which is almost literally the heart of the whole thing.

I guess that "phonogram" would have been structurally a more perfect match, but we in the USA might think it was some kind of post-singing-telegram kind of novelty. ;) Like one of those gift cards that plays a song when you open it up, or one of those prankish little tune-playing things that goes off when you pull a few sheets off the toilet paper roll. (As if it's saying, "Hey, everybody! Someone's in here right now, and they just took a shit!")

Thanks for the tip-o-grams on turntables and such. And knowing that there are still Cream fans around, well, now I don't feel so old. Actually, I feel like putting on "Spoonful!" I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.
