Are you Uber disappointed that it's leaving some cities?

I just read the other day that Uber is leaving London, England, and now it's also leaving Montreal up in Canada. I personally have never taken an Uber, but I still kind of don't like the idea of competition being eliminated from what amounts to a monopoly is most jurisdictions.

Of course, I am a bit torn, because I think being a cabdriver can be a bit of a hard life. Because even though I am sure that there are periods during the day or night where it can prove quite lucrative, I bet you spend lots of time just sitting around waiting for your next fare - not making a penny.

Oh, well, it seems like regardless of my opinion one way or the other - or even that of the many folks who actually use Uber - it's not going to be profitable for them to operate in some locations. I think that they're fighting to stay in London, but Montreal is too small a market and they're just going to leave without anymore of battle than they already had when they first started business there.

What do you folks think? And is it something that you've used a lot? Will you miss it?

I didn't realize that if I kept hitting the submit button more than once that it would post it multiple times...

Sorry, Amanda Admin!

It's easier for me to hail a cab in the city than to use Uber. I also don't know the rates Uber charges as my fares tend to run $10 to $15 depending on where I'm going. "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)

I'VE NEVER USED UBER.
BUT I VERY RARELY USE A CAB.
CHEAPER AND EASIER TO DRIVE MYSELF.
DRIVING IS ONE OF THE LAST GREAT FREEDOMS.
WHEN I HAD OPEN HEART SURGERY, BESIDES BEING STUCK IN A HOSPITAL FOR WEEKS, I COULDN'T DRIVE A CAR AFTER I WAS RELEASED (WHILE MY CHEST HEALED FROM THE SURGERY).
IT FELT LIKE I WAS A PRISONER, UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AGAIN.
YOU DON'T APPRECIATE YOUR ABILITY TO DRIVE, UNTIL IT'S TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.

I'm not a big city guy, but my daughter who lives in Chicago orders Uber for me when I am there and it is luxurious and easy without the awkwardness of a cab ride and the cash tip. Definitely 100% better than a cab.

I hate cabs so much I've walked 3 or 4 miles in big cities rather than get one. Uber is like having a chauffeured limo pick you up and deposit you without the awkwardness of a cab. My experiences with Uber have been excellent. My experiences with cabs NOT SO MUCH. Jay G

It's more accurate to say that Uber is being pushed out of London than to say that it is leaving, which implies a consensual issue. I see that uber's new CEO, "Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over the in the role a month ago, will meet the Transport for London boss, Mike Brown, on Tuesday, 10 days after the regulator said it would not renew Uber’s private-hire licence."

I suspect that Uber will eventually have their license in London re-instated, if for no other reason than the tens of thousands of people who got income as Uber drivers. Let's face it. They had to be giving rides to a whole lot of people, so I suspect that, like with San Francisco, the issue was one of the taxi drivers not meeting the demand for rides.

Here's a good article on the situation in Montreal:

"Uber ends service in Montreal as regulatory crackdown continues

Uber has announced that it’s ending operations in Montreal, just days after its license to operate in London was revoked by city authorities. It’s the second blow struck by regulators in so many weeks, and it sends a dangerous signal that Uber’s business model might not be here to stay.
The company will end service in Montreal on October 14th, thanks to a new set of regulations that were to be imposed on its drivers by the provincial government. For the last year, Uber has operated in Quebec under a pilot program, which required some training and vetting of drivers, and the payment of a small tax to the government. The Quebec government offered to renew the pilot program for another year, but with additional training and vetting requirements for drivers. Uber deemed the terms overly restrictive, and announced this morning that it will end service in the province.

Montreal Uber GM Jean-Nicolas Guillemette highlighted a new rule being introduced, which would require 35 hours of training for anyone who wanted to drive for Uber, in addition to a new background check to be conducted by the police. Previously, 21 hours of training and a private background check were required.
Guillemette said that 35 hours of training is “too much,” and that Uber already trains its drivers on an ongoing basis. He highlighted that the majority of Uber’s drivers are part-time, and pointed out that many other part-time side gigs like AirBnb don’t require any training.
Uber’s decision to pull out marks the end of a tumultuous few years for the service in Montreal. The ride-sharing service expanded to Montreal early, but has been plagued by regulatory problems since the beginning. While the provincial government only started legislating against Uber in the past year, there’s been an ongoing battle between Montreal’s taxi office and Uber ever since the company showed up. In classic Uber fashion, the company denied that its service was ever illegal, and it paid for rental cars and impound fees as its drivers were taken off the road.
It seemed as though the government and Uber came to an agreement last year, with a number of restrictions to bring Uber drivers closer to the status of taxis, and the enactment of a program to share Uber revenues with the government in order to help the taxi industry modernize.
There is a glimmer of hope left for Uber and Quebec. Guillemette told reporters this morning that Uber would stay in Montreal if Quebec reconsiders the rules. Mayoral elections are scheduled for early November in the city, and candidates’ opinion on Uber — which is popular among residents — is likely to become a huge topic for discussion." Governments love governing and that usually means making rules, and then rules on top of rules. Those who jump through hoops or pay off politicians benefit and the public suffers.

Freedom is something government by nature detests and it seems here that this is what the battle is all about. Taxis are a great source of money for government especially if they can keep supply low and demand high by organizing monopolies. Those who are owning taxis and paying off the politicians rightfully hate the competition of a free market with fewer restrictions.

Reminds me of how the English government used to declare the land all owned by the government and those who dared hunt and fish for a livelihood were "poachers" who would be hanged. Only the wealthy were allowed such activities. "The more things change the more they stay the same." Jay G

I work as a cab driver here in the UK so I would be quite happy to see the back of Uber although I don't believe that will happen. They are allowed to continue operating in London while they appeal the decision to revoke their licence so I suspect they will work with TFL to address the concerns that led to the refusal to renew their licence.

I don't work in London and Uber are not operating in the Town where I work so I'm not directly affected by it one way or the other.

Cab drivers in London are probably very different than those in America. In the USA the payoffs to the government are huge and expensive for the driver.

This, in turn, allows them to have a monopoly business where they can be routinely rude and unpleasant to customers. Not all drivers are rude, of course, but I have had so many bad experiences that I have walked two or three miles rather than gotten a cab in Chicago. Jay G
