Medion PCs?

My near 5 year old HP desktop has been playing up recently going through the "windows is unable to start/start up repair process" on numerous occasions so I figured maybe it's time to invest in a new machine. Browsing on Amazon some Medion branded PCs have caught my attention as being reasonably priced and generally seem to have better specs than similar priced and even more expensive models of other brands. Also there is an offer on now whereby if you buy any new Windows 7 PC you can get an upgrade offer to Windows 8 Pro for ?14.99 (GBP) when it becomes available which I find quite tempting.

I'm not at all familiar with the Medion brand, apparently they appear to be a German company which in my mind is usually a sign of a well made product with lasting longevity although I suspect they are thrown together on the cheap in China like everything else these days, so I was just wondering if any other Porn Users have owned or had any experience with this make of PC. I only have a limited technical knowledge on computers so any feedback would be welcomed good or bad. Edited by Staff on Sep 27, 2012, 06:37am

Firstly, never heard of them, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are a bad computer. I'd very carefully examine their Warrenty, because unles you are saving money with a refurbished or scratch & dent computer, the Warrenty is the most valuable part of a new computer that you aren't building yourself.

Secondly, I would not recommend upgrading to Windows 8 immediately - that is a great price, and I'd probably buy the upgrade, but only if I could use it 1 year after Windows 8 was released. New OS's are usually very buggy, why bother paying them to test out their new system? After a year, generally speaking, the vast majority of the bugs will be fixed. There is the semi-confirmed, Windows bi-versional curse.

Going back to the first windows every other OS that came out was worse the the one.

95 Great new leap
98 Buggy
98 SE Good night and day from 98
Millennium Buggy
Win 2000 ( was a rock star still is)
XP was the best improvement since 95
Vista Buggy
Windows 7 ( like XP on steroids.

There were other versions but they were not really releases and were upgrades or servers editions. On 98SE it was deemed a release.

I digress, if one believes in the curse 8 could be the
devil in disguise.

I like Win7 Ultimate and see no reason to leave it for 8.
I think the one thing I disliked about 7 was the email program removed and MS attempt to migrate others to hotmail etc.

As 8 is being released I think you may find great deals on 7 PC's !

I hope Windows 8 is free of the demonic curse, but I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't. The GUI looks somewhat over simplified and cumbersome for classic "power users". I haven't tried the beta yet, so I'll refrain from judging it too much.

The discount for Windows 7 rigs when Windows 8 comes out is a very good point - they usually drop about $100 off the machines, if not more! "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Medion is quite a big brand in Europe...as far as I know mostly distributed from this chain of supermarkets, called Aldi (somewhat similar to Walmart).

There has never been any bad stories about the brand - as far as I know... "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Never bought one myself but they are meant to be real bargains and good machines, yeah sold usually at aldi every so often so you have to be quick and get down to a local store as I don't think you can buy online as far as I know, you didn't used to be able to anyway.

I've heard nothing put praise for them when I was looking for a new PC a couple of years ago. "Women are like tricks by sleight of hand, Which, to admire, we should not understand." WILLIAM CONGREVE

Thanks for that elephant, that fills me with confidence to hear that. I think I'll probably take the plunge and buy one of them. There's a couple of Aldi stores around here so maybe I'll check what they have before ordering from Amazon.

Toadsith I'll probably follow your advice and give the upgrade a miss. As far as I can see the upgrade offer has to be redeemed by February 28th 2013 so it looks like there's not the possibility to hold on to it for a year while they fix all the bugs. I'm not totally sure I would have the confidence to undertake a major system upgrade on my own anyway.

Regarding the Windows 8 curse, it recently hit the news that Intel's CEO said at a company meeting that Windows 8 was not yet ready for consumer release but would be released anyway. Waiting for some time to jump on it seems a good advice.

Yeah, that's a very bad sign. Interesting news though, I hadn't heard about that. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

That curse is not exactly fair as it includes 1 server OS and ignores the rest. If the server OS was removed or it included all the other server OS releases the whole thing falls apart.

Recently Microsoft have been allowing people to install free preview builds of their OS's many months before the final build is sold which allows them to use the public as beta testers and fix common issues. Compare that to the release of Millennium, for example, and you see its a very different story these days. The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I would have to disagree as there are many versions omitted that were server version not on the list. I assume you are referring to Win2000 which was a banking business mainstay until late 2000 and is why I included it, I personally used Win2000 as an OS for many year because it was so stable only problem with Win2000 I had was gaming due to how it handles the memory games did not mix.

I understand your point but if we go back to DOS it's self there are versions more stable both before and after.
I loved Dos5, and 6.0 well not so much but 6.22 was awesome in MHO. I suppose each person has their system of beliefs just like reason to vote for a particular president.

As program designer back in the day of these OS's there were many people using many OS by the masses for other then what MS intended. I am a huge fan of win2000, I just do not see it as a server OS as it was such a power house for datebases and business use. I used to think of Win2000 like
Windows 98SE Business edition it was so good.

Nice dialog though have a nice evening. Since 2007

I have never used Windows 2000 in anger so can't really comment on it's greatness but I do tend to agree with your summation of the other OS's with the possible exception of Vista which I didn't find that bad.

Also being a bit younger my memory of MS-DOS stretches back only as far as 6.22. I remember the countless hours of messing around with autoexec.bat and config.sys to free up enough memory in order to play the latest and greatest games. So much so that the sense of achievement of getting the game to run was sometimes more fun than playing the game itself

Anywho, have you tried Windows 8 yet? The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Nope not yet lol, and the whole fun theory may fall apart.
I have taken some looks at it, I have Win7 Ultimate 64, my views are mixed on 8 from beta looks at it.
I know all versions of windows since the beginning including the old DOS have been hacked and cracked to death.
My guess is maybe 1/3 of all WinOS have been acquired illegally. Company I worked for recently that promoted honesty and healthy life styles LOLOL also shared versions of Office and WinXP on all there machines not legit.
( all 175 machines )
I digress from what I hear MS is stepping up the prevention of copies and really making it more of their 8 plan.
Have you tried it MBF? Since 2007

Sometimes I feel like the only person that found Vista to be a big improvement on XP. I've still got a laptop running on XP and it's always been unstable and glitchy. My desktop PC runs Vista and is rock solid. I doubt I suffer one crash a month. The most annoying thing to be honest is Microsoft updates which frequently demand a reboot.

Favourite, so far for me, is Windows 7. I've been using that on my main laptop for a couple of years now and I love some of the new features (file filters, pinning files to taskbar applications etc.)

I've never tried Windows 8, so I can't comment about day-to-day usage of it, but the screenshots of the Windows 8 desktop look remarkably similar to previous versions apart from the replacement of the start menu (which desperately needs improving in Vista and 7 anyway).

Getting back on topic, as far as I know Medion are cheap but sturdy. Don't expect excellent performance but they are meant to be reliable. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.
