Character limit on reviews

Does anyone else struggle with the character count on reviews? I'm currently writing a review and have been trying to edit it down for about 20 minutes now to fit into the allowed character limit. It's getting vaguer and vaguer, particularly as it's a review of an entire network.

If it comes down to it, just continue any section that you don't have room for in the section below it. If the bottom line runs over, continue in a reply. I've had to do that. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Ah thanks, I might do that in future. It was the bottom line that was overrunning. First it was over the character limit, then it was too many lines. Hope one day they'll consider increasing the character limit, as I like to try and include both technical details and opinions, which 5000 characters doesn't always allow me to do.

Actually, the character limit has been extended several times already. We have no immediate plans to extend it again but will keep your preference in mind for the future. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I know what you mean, Marcus. In my case it's always the "cons" I have the problem with. I hate to continue on into the "bottom line" with them so I slash and burn quite a few cons before I submit anything. Great review, btw, just got finished looking at it.

In a way, the character limit does help you write a better review. When they're running long, it makes you go over everything to weed out stuff that really isn't necessary. I don't think I've ever written a review and posted my first draft. I tend to put it aside and come back to it the next day to see how it reads. Most of the time, I'll do that two or three times and wind up surprised at what I can cut out. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

There's an easy solution to that, messmer - Stop joining crappy sites! Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I have to work to keep below the 5000-character limit too. It can be a struggle but I understand why there needs to be a limit. It is definitely easier now since the limit was increased.

Thank you Khan. I think my Bella Network review has been the first I have REALLY struggled with. Maybe the network sites could have a more generous character limit than solo ones as there's the possibility of having more to write?

Thanks messmer for the feedback on the review And thanks RagingBuddhist for reply #7, made me laugh out loud Seriously, though, I do agree that it forces users to weed out some of the chaff, and I do normally find it quite easy, but with Bella Network I really struggled.

Maybe another suggestion would be for a separate box on technical specs (video size, number of photos/galleries etc) and then the bottom line? Just an idea.

Are there any others these days, RB?

Kidding aside, do you know of any good sites that use Epoch for a biller?. I still have no idea why I cannot join JAV HD because after three attempts Epoch still will not allow me to complete the transaction. No notification, no error message, it's just not being forwarded. This is something new to me and has me wondering if Epoch has all of a sudden decided not to accept re-chargeable credit cards?????.

So, any ideas when it comes to a good site that might use Epoch so I can see if my card works with them? Don't bother to mention the following:

AO30, Anilos, 21Sextreme, ALSScan, ATK Galleria, ATK Natural & Hairy, ATK Aunt Judys, Score HD, Bangbros., Naughty America, Reality Kings, Karups, Brazzers, Nubiles, Young.And.Legal, Kink.com sites, Art-Lingerie, Vintage Flash, Video Box, Videosz, Pornstar Network.

Some of the above I find too bland to go back to, while with others I am a subscriber at this very moment, and with others yet I am waiting for some time to lapse before re-subscribing.

Waiting with bated breath (and it can be softcore, hardcore, picture and/or video)

m.

If there were no character or line limits, my reviews would be much longer, because I tend to ramble.

Some people have a flair for stating things concisely. I admire that.

But I often have been confined by the Pros, Cons, and Bottom Line sections.

And I have sometimes used RB's solution of continuing my review as a reply to the original review. Edited on Mar 10, 2013, 05:27pm

Being honest here.

I think the existing character limit is OK.

It is sufficient, provided you keep things to the point.

If you get on a rant or are getting verbose, you will still have a problem.

Otherwise you should be OK!

Another thought is you can write a reply to your review and add any additional info there. A true neck-lover.

It as happened a couple of times where I had to alter part of my review because I kept going over the character count in one of the sections (usually the con one). I think RB's suggestion is the best one so simply continue in the bottom line section. Mind you if a site is so bad that you are now writing multiples negative comments in the Bottom Line section then you could always limit the con's to the more griveous ones and add a little notation like: Site is Utter Crap. Long live the Brown Coats.

I'm definitely the wrong one to ask. I've been fed up with mainstream porn for years and find myself going back to the same few sites over and over again. Fortunately for me, I'm a hoarder and happy enough going back over the ton of stuff I downloaded years ago. I almost always find myself looking at something I haven't seen in a long time or even forgot I had.

No idea what to tell you there, other than writing directly to Epoch, asking them what the problem is.

That's one hell of a challenge. You've ruled out just about all of the heavy hitters in the industry. But I certainly understand your frustration with what is being offered these days.
The answer lies in what you think you might like to watch and that, of course, is a matter of personal preference. You also might be limiting yourself on choices if you insist on only using Epoch as the billing agent. I don't think that any of the few sites I go back to even offer Epoch billing. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I think if we make reviews too long people won't read them and the point of having them may be lost.
I like Medium reviews to read. As long one often repeat the same thing just said different. Since 2007

^I agree with you because I will often skip reading some sections on long reviews because I don't want to spend the next 10 minutes reading everything that's on there. I appreciate hard data but I think that some editing is not necessarily a bad thing. I know that I try to do that whenever I can but I'm not always successful because I'm not as good as most of you at writing reviews. Long live the Brown Coats.

It was just a thought, RB. I would like to try a subscription to any quality site I have not previously subscribed to that uses Epoch, just to see if that one will go through. I don't even insist on "fully dressed, yet wearing fine lingerie, mature women who strip to the buff" any more. As long as I don't feel that I have wasted my money. But you are right, I shouldn't have asked because everyone's taste is so different.

Don't sell yourself short. There's definitely no reason to compare your reviews to others. Looking at over a dozen of your reviews, just about every one that got a reply was to thank you for a good review - and I didn't see any that asked for more details. Not everyone is interested in little things like bit rates or the names of the photographers. If I wasn't stuck on joining the same few sites over and over again, I could easily see me checking out a site based on the information you've given. Again - don't sell yourself short! Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Yeah, I do agree, but I'm not sure how much more concise I could have made my Bella Pass review as I only wrote a paragraph on each model, plus the technical specs, plus a paragraph or two on the network. I've never really had a problem reviewing solo sites within the limit, but really struggled with Bella Pass.
