Anyone remember the first days of their internet porn usage? I remember quite well, and it's pretty hilarious now that i think of it, how i got my old computers back in 2003, infected with all kinds of Backdoors and Trojan horse viruses for downloading porn and just by browsing different free porn sites:D I mean now for the last 3-4 years i haven't had any problems anymore, probably because i have now the PC security thing and web-browser security covered. I also have memberships to different paysites, but i still do visit some free sites and i also know now what free sites are the absolute dangerous ones. Other people have similar experiences?

To tell you how much I didn't know about computers when I first got one, I was printing out pictures because I didn't know how to save them to a hard drive. Even I have to laugh about that now. I won't say I'm ready to get a job in someone's IT department, but I've come far enough to have built about a dozen computers and can troubleshoot things to the point where I've been up and running damn near consistently for 15 years now. And, like qvtta said, I definitely know what sites to avoid! Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

These were the early days of dial-up, and I still lived at home. I remember when we just got Windows 3.0 for the first time, and it was a totally different world from MS-DOS. I quickly found internet porn, and shared with my buddies. I'm going to share a totally embarrassing story here - especially embarrassing given the contrast between my tech novice at the time versus my understanding now as an engineer. I was going through a bunch of photos that I found for free - right click, save, right click, save... I must have missed "save" once when clicking in the menu, and the results caught up with me later. The next time I powered on the system, I was greeted with a 5 second showing of a full screen shot of a hot chick spreading her pussy for all to see! I thought, holy fuck, what just happened? It kept showing for 5 seconds every time I restarted the computer! Now what had really happened was that I had saved the picture as the background - so it showed for 5 seconds during start up before the wallpaper (which was different from the background in Windows 3.0) covered it over. So I couldn't figure out for the life of me what the hell happened. Here's the best part. I played dumb, and when my sister found it and told my parents, I suggested that it might be a virus. And they bought it!! I was totally off the hook! Plus our PC was showing this spread pussy shot on start up for 4 months straight before I could figure out how to take it down! Those were the days. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off. Edited on Feb 11, 2014, 05:28pm

That's a good one, LPee23! Browser pop-up menus still have "Save Image As..." and "Save Image As Background..." perilously close to each other (and too many email programs still make it way to easy to hit a "Reply All" button). Those two choices can be very different, especially if it's not your computer! And as pedantic and corrective as I can be in person, my only "good" excuse I can ever seem to come up with is the look and a meek "Uh, I don't know" response. Sure, I might have been dumb and careless enough to not hide my porn, but I'm not dumb enough to actually be unaware of looking at porn. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? You boys are youngsters. With a dial-up delivering 7K per second, downloading a low rez image was like watching pubic hair grow. Modems sped up to 14.4K and the wait was still painful. I wrote off internet porn and never went back. Until.......... About ten or twelve years later, I was visiting Joe in Rochester and we set up a new puter for him.He was a total newbie with many questions. After several days he asked, "What about porn?" "Don't bother" sez I. "You'll be old before you'll have ten pictures" Three weeks later, I'm back in California speaking to him on the phone. He reported that my advise on porn may have been a bit outdated. He sent me several hundred links and changed my life. DSL and later cable modems made it all quite doable. Hundreds of times I have accidentally clicked "set as desktop background and gotten a surprise the next time I powered up. I've always been a single user so I have no embarrassing tales to tell unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck. Edited on Feb 12, 2014, 12:09am

I had similar security issues back around 2000. I had so many spyware, malware, viruses, that it would take 10-15 minutes for the computer to boot. Probably my funniest though was that desktop stripper Virtual Girl or something like that. I remember allowing it to install just to see what it looked like. I of course forgot to remove it and my girlfriend at the time was working on her homework. The look on her face was worth the embarrassment as Aria Giovanni appeared along the bottom toolbar and preceded to dance and strip across it. My girlfriend thought it was some woman I was chatting with. No joke. She went off on me for about 2 hours. I also would have those full volume ads pop up and make anyone in the house think I was having sex with the heavy moaning. I kind of miss those days My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I remember the first video I ever saw of a woman peeing. Her stream was a tetris-like shower of very large white pixels. It was actually funny, and I wish I still had it! Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

Damn this thread brings back memories! The slooooow dial up connections. The photos that took forever to download. I remember the first 'video' I ever saw online was a 3 or 4 second long GIF. I thought that the world had changed. As an aside, I remember swapping some VHS tapes with a co-worker back in '96 or '97 and he expressed the wildly insane opinion that someday we'd be able to watch and download ENTIRE porn movies over the internet. I laughed and told him that I'd like to try what he was smoking. The worst part of that story is that he was an in-house investment portfolio manager with a lot of experience in raising capital. He jokingly suggested that he and I should get into business. I can only imagine if we had. There might be a whole line of ass-themed movies, like "The Admiral's Ass Cravings," or "The Admiral Rows the Little Man in the Boat, and then eats ass..." Okay, I'd need better titles...

I guess that means videos were out of the question until you could figure those out! I actually (somehow) knew I just couldn't be saving pictures to the computer's internal HDD because it was used by the family (on individual basis, when no other member was around ). So...I saved to 3.5" floppy disks, not exactly an efficient or subtle way to carry out dirty hobbies. First, floppies are tiny--a "high density" 3.5" holds a whopping 1.44 MB--fortunately a "full size" image back in the late '90s wasn't so massive as it is now, nor were there really any consumer displays to really make use of so many lovely pixels. And second, they are slow and loud little bastards that would make a modern user think the computer's having a serious hardware problem, or just being a moral scold and ruining the disk. Clicking sounds on a dying hard drive are nothing compared to the dull, metallic, spring-loaded sounds that a normally functioning floppy makes when writing/reading. To add insult to injury, they were quite cheap, so I had a small plastic storage case of disks at the time, though eventually erasing them was maddening because I was paranoid I had missed one. Also, on the Macintosh Performa we had at the time there was no physical eject button for the floppy drive, so if there was a problem with one--as inevitably there would be with such frequent use--you had to stick a straightened paper clip into a hole below the drive to force eject it. If you were smart you'd have a bent paper clip along with the floppies, though it kinda made me feel like a peeping Tom carrying around a set of binoculars knowing what was on most of the disks. --- On a side note, one of my earliest memories of just hearing about the Internet for the first time came from a Popular Mechanics cover in 1994. It was a typical cover for the magazine; ridiculously outlandish to the point of sci-fi fantasy, like all their other covers with paintings of flying cars and massive engineering projects. May have even made me subconsciously believe for a good part of the 1990s that a bunch of gigantic glass tubes would have to be built before we could give up our (superfast!) 56K modems. Though that cover looks like something that would make the more gullible of us think the Internet is a literal series of tubes, the article had a point. Once the technology and infrastructure were in place it would be possible to stream full movies, basically like we so easily do now with YouTube, Netflix, or RoxyRaye.com (okay, that last one wasn't exactly predicted on the cover). Along with streaming movies, shopping, banking, education, and video games could and would be online--and eventually through smart TVs or set top boxes (like Roku and video game systems are now). They even said the most practical way for high speed was fiberoptics, not cable and definitely not through your phone line. They don't really talk about downloading information because everything would be online, available instantly. The only downside, though not explicitly mentioned, is the rise of tech mergers and the negative effect this would have on cost to consumers (the article had the view that mergers would help bring it all to consumers more quickly, a sort of tech utopia that doesn't see the need for net neutrality laws). For a 20 year old article, it reads creepily prescient today. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. That's a great story. Your parents obviously think well of you. You couldn't do that with magazines (just to move the timeline even further back). My mother found my 'zine stash in the early '90's and told me that she wasn't going to allow that "smut" in her house. And these were Playboy models revealing a bit of pubic hair while looking as horny as chilled pineapple. My first internet porn was very small and halo-riddled picture files downloaded at snails-in-molasses dialup speed. They disappeared with the hard drive crash of the period, around '99 or 2000. This is a great thread, BTW. I've been enjoying all of the funny stories, and they're quite well told. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Feb 13, 2014, 03:27am

Mine was given to me by a IT guy in Sunnyvale, it was a 5 second black white animated of Ginger Lynn Masterbating. I had that until a 2005 when I lost a drive with it on there had it from like 1985 was made for Dos. Since 2007

I remember the day I got my first personal computer, a Gateway 286 with 2 megs of RAM and a 40 meg hard drive. And it had a modem. Windows wasn't around then--this was a MS-DOS machine. I think this was in the late 80s. A friend came over and we spent several hours dialing into various bulletin boards, downloading crappy porn images. That was my first online porn. Later in the 90s, I used to waste a lot of time on UseNet, downloading pirated images. I noticed watermarks on a lot of them, and even checked out a few websites, but the quality was still too low for me to use that as my main form of porn. Plus, the signal to noise ratio was pretty low on UseNet. My first online porn site membership was to TeenDreams in the summer of 2006. I haven't bought a porn mag since, and have been exclusively digital since then. I still have a couple of boxes of porn mags in my storage unit, but they are going to dumpster very soon.

This thread is making me feel ancient. My first online smut (you couldn't really call it porn) wasn't from the Internet but was from local BBS's and from CompuServe (pre AOL days) downloaded with a 300 baud modem. As best I could tell, it was scans from popular men's mags converted to ASCII Art. Do a Google Image search on "ASCII ART" and you'll get an idea. Just keep in mind that back then, they were a whopping 80 characters wide. You had to print them on your dot-matrix printer (the best ones even had true decenders) because most home computers only had a display of 40 characters wide. I remember when the Internet came along we used to keep "Show Pictures" turned off on the browser so the page would load. After the page loaded you selected which images on the page you wanted to load ... and then waited ... and waited ... and waited. Images were usually 16 color with the really high quality stuff being 256 color. As has been mentioned by others, animated GIF's were the ancestors of movies. A number of years later, I recall being in a webmaster chat room when a guy was beta-testing 1st generation live streaming ... what today would be a webcam. It was almost comical because the image was tiny and only refreshed every few seconds. We told him the model had better learn to move in slow motion. Anyway, the early stuff I don't try to remember much more than I try to remember my Jr. High School days. I think I found the internet in about '98 back when AOL rocked the house and a 56k modem was high speed. Of course it didn't take long after that to find the naked bits on it either. I joined a few sites that I'm sure are long since gone. Vids were super choppy and maybe only a few minutes long ... and waiting for them to load was like a Heinz ketchup commercial. The pics were maybe a few hundred pixels and pretty crappy. The thing I remember most was that the sites just threw a bunch of stuff out there. Boy / girl, solo, beastiality, whatever they could get their hands on to put up on a site that looked like porn. It definitely was the wild west back then.

My first computer "porn" was an ascii print out that looked something like Raquel Welch, on a long roll of paper. Well, it was 1976 and I was 15 years old, so it was pretty exciting! The first film I downloaded was in about 1998, off usenet. It was 89MB, took 2 days to download in about 80 segments - a 4 minute clip of a Color Climax film. I didn't bother with films again until the advent of broadband. I've just come back from a business trip, and have downloaded all the updates from SexArt & TheLifeErotic from the last 10 days, well over 12GB in total, in under an hour! How times have changed. Which makes me think - how can the membership/unlimited download business model continue to work? If you can join any site for 1 month, and download years of material, and never rejoin, how are they going to make money? The situation will only get worse as the libraries on the sites get larger and internet connections get faster. In the end, something has to give or we will be able to download a lifetime's worth of porn in one month's membership of one site. Even without all the piracy, you can see how the business is dying. Maybe they will only give unlimited access to their libraries to members with annual subscriptions.

Parsnip, don't forget jook's thread from last month on the economics of porn industry. I don't know if I'd agree with you that they are "a complete disaster" like you said in that thread, but there are issues when you combine unlimited, or practically unlimited, downloads with high speed Internet connections. It's a delicate balancing act; how do you reward long-paying members without pissing off and possibly losing shorter term customers? I for one would certainly have some second thoughts about bothering to pay for membership to a site if I wasn't going to get the privilege of accessing all their released material upfront. I'm not talking about legitimate pay-per-view bonus content like live webcams--which hold about much interest with me as the Olympics or Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition--but regular photo and video sets that have been arbitrarily deemed "restricted" to longer subscribing members. For the time being I think sites are going to have continue offering one-for-all levels of access restricted only by time until they can figure out a fair way to sell subscriptions and still turn some sort of profit. I'm now in the middle of a huge file cleanup, renaming and consolidating everything I can to make things easier to find and to save space. In the process of going through a bunch of old offline drives, I found myself looking at some early mpg videos and laughing because I'd filed them in a folder called "Huge Files". The oldest in that folder was from March 2000 - a whopping 44 megabyte file at a grainy as hell resolution of 352x240 and a 700kbps bitrate. Hard to believe that was cutting edge at the time. I go to sites that have classic videos that I remember buying on VHS many years ago. The sad thing is they don't spend any money upgrading them and they are as grainy if not grainier then the VHS tapes I bought originally. It is nice to see those classic films again, but the quality brings tears to my eyes. I remember my first venture into internet porn, I did not know you could download. I think it was in the third site they had instructions up front how to download and I realized what fool I had been. Warning Will Robinson Edited on Feb 24, 2014, 02:37pm

Talk about grainy? The first full-length porn flick I saw was the classic Deep Throat. It was a copy of a copy of a copy (or something like that) played on a reel-to-reel video recorder borrowed from a TV studio, hooked to an old 19 inch television. Oh, the nostalgia... I did something similar this summer. I managed to eliminate a lot of stuff that was so poor quality that it just wasn't worth keeping. I managed to consolidate 22 external drives down to 12. The physical space saved there was worth it. Of course, these days I've been downloading a lot so the drives are filling up again.
