technical help

I apologize for being away so long, but I have been extremely busy with my online business.
About two weeks ago my computer caught a virus and I had to have it reformatted. When I got it back, I found that all my videos did not play properly. I have tried Windows Media, GOM player and also Real player. I got advice that VLC might solve the problem, but I could not get it to work at all. I have tried deleting each program and reloading and nothing helps. If I leave the screen on its smallest size, the videos are more or less ok. If I expand them, I get stuttering and distortions. Something has changed in my system. I won't bring it back to the tech who worked on it for two reasons. One I don't think he is very competent and two he did not react well to seeing the porn I had on it. Any ideas?

Try installing the codecs, and maybe using a different player like : KMplayer or BS player who install codecs. Sounds like the codecs are messed up try one of these players and that should give you a direction on what is up. Since 2007

I tried KMPlayer and can't see a way to view files on my hard drive. It looks like it is for files on the internet and for games. I will try BSplayer.

KM player at install has a way to not use that player.

ummmm try some older versions of kmplayer. here

It is pretty common for virus to mess up codecs and other multimedia.

Not sure on your operating system, but do a google search for removing codecs. Since 2007

You may have a point, but I just got it back from being "fixed" due to a virus. The last time I tried to get new codecs, I got a lot of unwanted programs and adware. KMplayer did the same when I tried it today. I have found by accident a fix of sorts. If I make my monitor 800x600, the videos in the small size fill up my whole screen. In that size the videos play better. Not HD, but ok.

Yes sure sound like codec, just and fyi when you install anything free read the install carefully they add stuff you may not want or need.

There is a program called CCleaner to thats free and no adware, it has a registry cleaner in it that may also fix the problems. Often times tech remove the virus but leave messes behind because things changed in the registry if they did not fix it files may be corrupt. Since 2007

If the videos are playing, even if they are stuttering when you expand them, it is unlikely to be a missing codec. If it was, the videos wouldn't play at all and you would get an error message of some sort to let you know why.

The stuttering makes me think there might be some background process running on your computer taking up a big percentage of your CPU usage.
Start playing a video and then open the task manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click Start Task Manager) click the processes tab and have a look at the CPU column. This will show what % of your processor is being used for each process.

Are there any processes taking up more than say 60-70% of CPU usage?

I tried reloading the codecs and found only that WMV can now play MP4.
None of the processes were using much of the CPU. When I tried Realplayer it was using 64% and the rest were very tiny numbers. Thanks for your help.

I have XP, but it is not old. It is from 2012 and is an HP that came with Windows 7. I hated it and had it downgraded.

Hmm bro it sure sound like a corrupt codec.
ummm well shit, wish I knew ia real easy solution I have seen this occur before and usually reinstalling the program I use for video works out ok. I had a virus a few years ago, and reinstalled codecs and was fine.
Try if you can o switch the players default rederrer . I know KMplayer and VLC alow a very easy switch. Since 2007

If he did not react well to seeing your porn I would say he's not very competent. Sorry, but if I paid someone to fix my computer it's to fix my computer not act as some sort of moral compass. He's got to have seen porn before you and if he really has a problem with it would have found another line of work.

Anyway, I hope it's working better with reinstalled codecs though I don't know why that would have mattered for full screen play. That sounds like a memory or CPU issue as I would think codec problems would have prevented you from playing the videos at any size. I have a Mac so I probably can't help you too much. (Solutions on Macs usually involve just installing new video programs until you find one that works, particularly for WMVs, though VLC handles most them reasonably well.)

Good luck, and keep us up to date if anything helps/changes. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I've become exhausted with my anger over how so many people can be so deeply offended by others harmless private activities that they feel compelled to do something but yet when they see real, unethical, even criminal, behavior they don't report it to the authorities. Our society can get its priorities so screwed up that we never tire of howling about people's healthy interests in consensual sexual activity but yet can't be bothered to report, say, the rape of a child even after witnessing it.

Hey mbaya,

The tech reformatted your drive, but left the videos intact? Did he back everything up and reload it after formatting, I assume he didn't make an image - or was it on a different drive he didn't do anything to? If he did give you a fresh install of Windows, I would try checking/updating your video card driver. I think it is unlikely to be a codec issue if you can't play wmv files. WMP is notoriously sketchy with some mp4 files, but I wouldn't think it would ever have a problem with wmv. I had an issue with my old XP computer once when it would crash every time I loaded an HD video, and it was just because the driver somehow rolled back to a generic Microshaft one. The videos were on a different drive. How do I check or update the video card driver?

I found how to do that and tried it. I was hoping that was the solution, but no. I tried the update option from Microsoft.

The first thing I did was delete and reinstall a new player. I think I will have to bring it to a different tech.

mbaya,

If you know what video card you have, search for the driver to it online. The MS driver search function doesn't always find the best driver, for example on my computer MS thinks a generic VGA driver is fine when I ask it to find a driver, however it is not fine. If you don't know the make/model of your video card, you can probably look it up from wherever you bought the computer (Dell service tag, Amazon, etc).

Do you have another computer you can test the videos on? Maybe copy a few to a jump drive and test it there if you can. Does the computer play videos from an external drive or jump drive which were not effected by the virus? If he did a full reformat/reinstall of the boot drive, then I would suspect all of the codecs, etc. would be gone, unless he took an image of the drive and reinstalled from that (which would be stupid in my opinion). I still suspect it is the video card. If your device manager shows anything like a "Generic MS" driver, or a driver I would try to find the real one. There is a program called Belarc Advisor that does a free search and should find your card.
And other real cool stuff about your PC.
You could then try Sluttys idea too. Since 2007

Thanks everybody for all your help.

I just got it back and it was the drivers. I made the tech uncomfortable but I needed to verify with him the quality of the videos. In his culture and in his country they just don't watch those videos.

Figures, but at least you eventually got the job done, I hope. Though I'm sure we've all seen our share of women we'd be more than willing to swing a hammer for, and we're not even contractors!

He even fixed the drivers at no cost. However, it was one of the most uncomfortable things in my life when he watched my video to check the quality. He was so nervous that I thought he was about to jump right out of his skin. He broke out into a cold sweat. No fun at all.

If someone wants to watch porn, I say fine. But if he is afraid that he will go directly to an unpleasant afterlife, that is another thing. He is from Morocco and a devout Muslim. I asked him if he has seen this on other computers and he said yes. But, he swears he never opened up the files.

I actually felt sorry for him. Business is business and we had to make sure that replacing the drivers fixed the problem.

I do all my own building and upgrades and fixes guess I am lucky in all these years never had to take my PC in for a repair as I do it myself. But would be odd having a guy watch a movie you spank the monkey to lol.
Me I just watch the movie to read the credits LOLOL Since 2007

I remember reading about a problem with a new DSLR camera on ALSScan's blog a few years back. It was brand new but there was something wrong with the sensor and it would produce noticeably poor quality images. Alex, the ALS webmaster/owner at the time, had to email them some free images which of course were obviously not coming from a church photographer. He mentioned how the technician was quite grateful he got to help them. Oh, and I think the camera was eventually fixed too.

I have a fairly vocal hostility to social networking (I think I've once told someone I wish Mark Zuckerberg would be droned ), so I have the same reaction whenever people ask me what I do on the Internet.

I'm lucky in that I'm in the same boat--and with a Mac I'm not going up to someone with the actual title of "Genius"--but I would be pretty nervous about a woman who I just met having to watch some of what I have.

There's basically no reasonable or comfortable explanation for much of the material I've collected over the years (and backed up, no less!). "I was curious" and "I'm sorry" would be futile in the face of the sheer quantity of it all, especially of some genres that probably don't need to be seen repeatedly. At best I figure it'd be like going on trial and having to sit through a videotape of your crimes in front of a packed courtroom. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it?
