How do you avoid porn 'hoarding'?

I’m asking this question in all seriousness because I want to stop hoarding. About four years ago I did a major cleanup of my collection and dumped tons of stuff. I did that 18 months ago as well and just did another one last week. Deleting porn that I never watched, wasn’t interested in or stuff that did nothing for me meant I cleaned out probably 6TB from my collection just last week. One big advantage is that I haven’t had to buy an external drive in a long time.

(As an aside, while hoarding is just part of who I am, I think my age plays a role. When I was a high school kid in the early 1980s and had a collection of a dozen Penthouse magazines there was no way I’d ever get rid of any one of them. Porn wasn’t easy to come by so I needed to guard it. Then, I discovered a used book store that sold porn cheap and the cigar smoking guy who ran it didn’t care if I was underage. He took my money and slipped my choices into a brown paper bag. But I still couldn’t get rid of anything. Same thing when VHS movies came along. Same with DVDs. But I’d like to think that things should be different in 2018 with the availability of internet porn.)

My approach when I join a site is to download a lot even knowing that I may never watch all of it. My list of models I like is long so I’ll download just about anything of theirs that I can find. Then I catalogue it, back it up and it becomes part of my collection even if I have no idea if it’s any good.

The way I see it there are two approaches I could take to end my hoarding. The first is to be far more selective in what I download. To be honest, I think this would be too difficult for me to do and I’d quickly slip back into my old habits.

The second approach may be to ‘quarantine’ what I download and sift through it more carefully and delete what I don’t like or have no interest in before I catalogue it and back it up. Maybe the quarantine would be a few months or even six. This has a better likelihood of success, but honestly it’s still just 50/50.

So if you aren't a hoarder (and if you are generally inclined to be one) how do you manage your collection? Any tips?

Now that I think about it a third option is to just say ‘fuck it’ and keep on hoarding and follow that with a major cull every 18 months or so.

Advice, as always, will be appreciated.

I have no idea how you stop hoarding porn when technically speaking the only you can do that is to stop joining porn sites and downloading content. I'm assuming that is not an option you are considering so what you're interested in is a way to manage all your porn without going insane.

The first thing you might want to do with future downloads is to be a little more picky. While I can understand your desire to download all the content a favorite performer has done. I suspect that a lot of that content is stuff that you won't ever watch or watch only once because it didn't turn you on. You can easily save a lot of HD space by being pro-active prior to downloading.

The second thing you can do is to start a spring cleaning of your HD using the above system of deleting stuff you have never watched or only watched once but didn't really enjoy. It's tedious and very time consuming but you sometime discover stuff you have forgotten you had all the while finding stuff you never wanted.

I have about 4TB worth of porn and I'm ultra picky about the stuff I download and even I have stuff that I need to delete because I know that I will never watch it again. Long live the Brown Coats.

I'm being selective about what I upload, but I do have porn I could delete. It just doesn't take up that much space so I don't bother to throw it out. So as the years go by, I'm downloading less. Warning Will Robinson

I too tend to be a porn hoarder. One of the things that helps me is simply joining fewer sites and downloading less material. I originally did it to reduce my monthly porn budget, but I stopped joining sites willy-nilly and downloading all sorts of extraneous scenes. I really enjoy a lot of different types of porn, but don't join many sites, and when I do, I make a decision if downloading anything is worth the inconvenience of spending the time agonizing about how and where to store it (or shuffle it between my externals). More often than not, I join, look around, enjoy streaming new stuff, then move on. I only download new stuff in the genres I keep coming back to.

I just went through a lot of my collection. I looked at all the stuff out of my core interests and dumped it all whether I liked it or not. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

I don't think space is the main problem with the "gotta collect it all" mentality.

Instead I believe the problem is that it causes a type of anxiety. Can I see everything? Consume everything? Am I missing out on something? Am I squeezing all the value out of this subscription?

There's also a twisted pleasure in the pursuit of something that sometimes trumps the thing itself. And the thing you don't have is always more appealing that what you do have. You could have 1TB of videos on your drive that you've not seen yet and still find yourself more interested in downloading videos you've not yet acquired than watching what you already have.

Some sites are priced so they encourage a join for a month and download all you can approach. This is unfortunate because it can lead to a downloading grind that is more work than fun and I think ultimately costs them money. I've gotten to the point where I prefer annual memberships when not unreasonably priced.

What I would suggest is to find the core set of sites that are consistently producing content you like and get annual memberships to them. Hopefully this is a small enough set and have reasonable deals so you can swing it.

For me, this helps a bit. You might still want to collect everything, but at least you shouldn't feel any rush to do so. I think knowing you are not on a clock and that you have access whenever you want provides peace of mind that is worthwhile. Edited on Mar 28, 2018, 03:47am

Years ago I collected porn tapes (VHS) just to have them. I had a huge collection of thousands that I never watched or was interested in. I decided to go through the collection and ended up getting rid of a huge majority of it.

I now only download what I really like and actually watch. I still have a decent collection, but nothing like before.

Hmmm... for a new guy here you really have me figured out! For me, the hunt and 'catch' of new porn is more important than having it. I like joining new sites and seeing what they have.

Also, as you suggest, I do have a regular slate of sites that I always like their content so I join them often. I don't use annual subscriptions since there are probably 20 or more sites I join regularly and annual memberships would break my budget.

You have to admit that hoarding today is better than it was in the days of VHS tapes. Jesus, if I had the amount of porn on VHS that I am now able to fit on external drives in a briefcase I'd need to rent a warehouse!

At one time, I think I might have been the worst porn hoarder. I can be obsessive about these things. I've been known to be an even worse music hoarder. Video games too. I have something like 180 games on Xbox One and Xbox 360 that are backwards compatible. It's the impulse buys. They will have once blockbuster games for $4.99 digital and I'll buy 10 different ones.

But in 2012-2013, I was living in a rental home. The house we had bought had several fairly major renovations that were needed, mostly in the kitchen. I had 3-4 externals hooked up to my computer at the rental, came home one day and smelled a burning plastic smell. Turns out, the rental had a leak in an overhang area of the roof and it was leaking down into the wall which was where the electrical wires were. I salvaged some content but 95% of the content on those 4 externals, about 12 TB, was gone. I made a decision to switch to USB-powered externals. Once I was back in our regular house I bought 3 Western Digital My Passport 2 TB hard drives, a Toshiba Canvio USB external and a few months later I added a 4 TB Western Digital My Passport. I moved what content I had on two other externals to the new Passports and in the process started deleting everything I didn't think I would want.

Since then, I've not bought anymore externals and even turned the Toshiba one into an external for my Xbox One. It has limited my space somewhat and what I do when downloading from a site now is I download directly to my PC's hard drive. It has a SSD that Windows and work software is on and a standard HDD that I move music to and from and download porn to. I then, about once a month, decide whether to move it to one of the externals or delete it. I don't even keep the externals plugged into the PC until it's moving time. I have a folder on my PC of roughly 100 of my favorite scenes to watch.

That has helped the porn hoarding a lot. Can't say much about the video game one since Microsoft is having a damned Spring sale right now on digital games. And I've even found a way to lighten my music hoarding.

Almost all of my favorite music is from the 70s, 80s, 90s and a few since 2000. I have all albums of my favorite bands from pre-1990. But there will be some newer bands that sneak in. I'm a huge Tool, Rush, King Crimson, King's X prog fan and was recommended Soen and Rishloo. So, while looking for their content, I noticed the Apple Music offers of 3 free months. They had these two newer bands so I signed up so I could listen to them before buying.

I have an iPhone and my SUV has Apple CarPlay, not that I ever knew what it was for but the salesman made a huge deal about it. I connected my phone to the car's entertainment center and I suddenly had Apple Music in my car. So, now, I paid a year subscription of the Apple Music, just $99, which is cheaper than Sirius, at least for me and I have access to tons of albums to stream in my car or on my phone. Including the one that shocked me, King Crimson, they had been adamant about not allowing their music to be streamed but must have given in to Apple and even have their Expanded Remastered albums on it. So, all of my hoarding except video games is under control right now. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I'm a gamer too. I have a Steam account with hundreds of games I buy at their winter and summer sales because they're really good bargains. I stopped even looking at the sales because even if I played computer games non-stop all day and night, it would take me years to work through the games I have.

I think Jade1 really nailed it. There's a difference between collecting and hoarding. Collectors look for things that really enhance a collection. Hoarders just want everything.

It really comes down to asking oneself if the things you download will actually improve your collection and give you pleasure, or are they downloaded because you're afraid you'll miss out? If you answer, "I might miss a great scene by (model)," maybe you should rethink whether you're collecting porn to enhance your life or doing it to express some deep seated fear of missing out on something. Just in general I think it's easier to amass a large collection digitally.

There's a difference between having hundreds of Steam games and having hundreds of PS2 games taking up multiple shelves in your house.

There's also a difference when purchasing. When you buy something using a credit card you don't feel it in the same way as if you used cash. There's something about opening your wallet, taking the bills out, and actually seeing them leave that is much more visceral. Without the physicality (or perhaps visual) you simply don't have the same sense of the transaction when it is all done digitally.

In terms of video games, I too have many unfinished or unplayed games. In particular the type I have trouble with is what I'd call my nostalgia category. For example if a game I played on console years ago and really enjoyed is ported to PC many years later, it's hard for me not to want to re-buy it again. (I'm looking at you JRPGs) But in practice I rarely do ever replay them again.

For newer games, I'll usually play them enough to get a sense of what their mechanics are. But unless it is really exceptional I'll rarely finish it. Partly this is because games today are over long and partly it's because I've basically played every genre at this point and so it's kind of a been there done that before type affair with better graphics.

I was spoiled when I was younger because there were a lot of brand new game experiences all the time back then. The first RPG, ARPG, the first multi-player game, the first RTS, the first FPS, the first online game, etc. Today most of the genres and formulas have been pretty well established and the main change is that they've cross-pollinated with each other so that there are many hybrids that don't fit neatly into any one genre.

The last game on PC I think I played thru completely was Divinity Original Sin 2 http://www.divinity.game/. Edited on Mar 29, 2018, 10:36am

I was on the Alpha testing team for Divinity Original Sin I. It was a fantastic game. I have the second one, but don't have a modern enough computer to play it. But I bought it anyway for when I upgrade (I've been talking about upgrading my computer system for about four years now).

Financial experts often talk about the fact that people will use credit or debit cards to buy things they wouldn't if they relied on cash. This is a special problem with internet transactions. I personally use cash for most day to day purchases to watch my expenditures, and don't keep my credit card information on file anywhere so I have to go to my wallet and pull out the card to make an online transaction. This has significantly reduced my online spending. Often I'll surf over to a porn site, check it out, and go to the join page, and while retrieving my credit card, decide against buying.

My real space crunch comes from the fact that I own over 500 books, many of them roleplaying games, that I've collected over my life. I'd be envious of being able to have most of my hardcover books be as small as a PS2 game. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

I've never considered myself a hoarder but at times in the past I've probably been borderline addicted to porn. Here's a few basic rules I try to keep in mind to keep my dopamine levels in check:

Never use a download manager. It just encourages jumping from site to site without going through what I got and it chews up a lot of drive space for the small amount I'll end up keeping.

Mange your time. I budget a certain amount of time to going through a site, downloading only what I want. Then I try and edit that content down again before getting a new membership. I try not to do a “feast or famine” approach, just figure out what you can reasonably do without sacrificing the real world.

Limit your space. I mainly collect pics and edit down the zip files to about 20-40 pics per scene so hard drive space isn't that big of a deal to me but I still keep a top limit as to how many photo sets I'm going to keep. If I were big into vids then I would certainly limit the number and size of my external drives. The more you have the more you worry about losing it all and the more time you have to spend on backing crap up.

Take time to curate your collection. If you never look at it then there's no point in keeping it. I also chose a time when I'm in a not so great mood to purge because then my mind set it is “when in doubt, toss it out”. I almost never regret tossing anything and I know it will be replaced with something new pretty soon. I don't keep many vids once I've watched them a few times. Being easily bored helps at this.

Don't get hung up on value. This is hard for me because I naturally want to squeeze everything out of a membership. I just remind myself that a monthly membership is usually less than the price of a movie ticket and soda so if I don't see all that I want to I'll just keep the membership an extra month or come back in 6 to 12 months to see the rest and soak up the updates. Porn is a commodity that isn't going away any time soon.

I hadn't seen that, but that's a good quote. I suspect that is a partial reason for drug use and suicides among rock stars.

If you've gotten everything (you thought) you wanted and yet you are still not happy, that is not a pleasant realization. Because where do you go from there?

Well, you certainly have something to look forward to because I think DOS2 is significantly better than the first game.

It's one of my favorite games of all time. I still replay it. I was SOOO disappointed with Dragon Age II. I don't have a good enough system to play the third one.

I tend to play the same computer games over and over. Baldur's Gate I + II, The Temple of Elemental Evil (especially with the Circle of 8 modpacks), Dragon Age Origins, Neverwinter Nights, and my pick for best CRPG of all time, Planescape: Torment. I think I am addicted to the "downloading" itself. I have about 10 TB of porn and I think I may have viewed 10% of it. I end up getting hooked on a new model/star for a while and watch all her stuff and that's about it. I am also afraid of losing older stuff when sites dump old vids. I sort by either site, star or category, so I am going to take some advice here and maybe sift through it and delete scenes that do nothing when I watch them. Well, this is going to be like detox, but I thank all you who made suggestions to rearadmiral!

I think the best approach is how some folks clean the clothes out of their closets... They dump anything they haven't worn in over a year. If I haven't looked at a piece of content for anywhere from 6-12 months, I delete it.

The tricky part is that I have to delete it without even looking at it. Because if I start rewatching it, I'll find it harder to part with. And really as much as I love porn, I can't always afford to lose an entire weekend to sorting through old files.

Maybe that sounds harsh? But I have scenes that I really love from five years ago and even though I don't watch them every day, I know exactly where to find them without any hunting around. And I do watch them again every few weeks or so. Therefore, if I haven't done that with a video or photo set, I can trust that it just wasn't that special.

I have a tendency to cycle through different genres/niches for porn, as my tastes change. But the suggestion to dump anything that's sat unwatched for a year is a really good one.

I think it takes some consideration of what you get out of porn. Is it the acquisition (similar to the "gotta get them all" of Pokemon) or is it the enjoyment of viewing that drives your collecting? The answer for each of us is different and should be the basis for what's worth keeping and what you should cull.

Thanks for sharing. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

Since Jan I've been very busy going through my whole porn collection and culling all the vids I deem wouldn't want to see again and archiving the others in simple directories Good, Awesome and Awesome+, then I have a directory for niche stuff like public nudity and lesbian. The reason for this is I just had some much porn scattered around on various drives not ever really looked at and it all seemed quite hard to find decent stuff as I'd always downloaded stuff I just never really wanted all that much, now I'm going keep it more strict on my preferences of would I watch it again.

I'm so glad I've decided to do it as I've got rid of loads of stuff taking up space which I know I'd never watch and just kept to get my moneys worth of a site, I realize I'd rather now stick to just vids I know for a fact I'd watch more than once, that;s the criteria now I'm sticking with. As others have said, for me it's about the hunt for and downloading scenes that look good from the preview clip and photos. I tend to join a site, download scenes from my favourite stars, then scenes with girls wearing lingerie (my particular fetish) and then scenes with hot cumshots or creampies. At some point before archiving the content to an external drive, I'll review it and weed out stuff I know I'll never watch in future.
I tend to archive my content on to drives that I'm no longer using and would estimate my collection to occupy between 3TB and 4TB of disk space spread over about 10 hard drives.
No doubt at some point when I'm no longer using my 3TB drives that are currently in my NAS device, I'll dig out the assorted archive drives and copy the best from those onto the 3TB drives.
