Mind your manners, Brits. As Americans, we look to the British to set an example of how we are supposed to behave politely. But apparently not all Brits are examples to be followed. One question in my mind is whether the Brit, if forced to serve a 2-year jail sentence in Dubai, will still be paid his regular salary from the United Nations. I read about a U.S. federal judge who was sent to a U.S. prison, for breaking the law. But he still received his regular salary (not his retirement pay, but his regular salary) while in prison. The fact he was in prison instead of serving on the bench did not make any difference in the salary he was legally entitled to. I think it would take a measure from either the U.S. Congress or the U.S. Senate to stop his regular salary, even though the man was in prison instead of on the job. I thought to myself: "Wow, that is some job protection." >>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<< Posted Nov 12 2010 9:02AM British man arrested for giving 'the finger' in Dubai airport By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY In a story that serves as a reminder to watch your manners when passing through Dubai, The Sun of London reports that a 34-year-old British man has been arrested and jailed for giving "the finger" to an airport worker there. The Sun says the incident began when a female airport employee would not let Paul Anthony use what the paper describes as a "customer services desk phone." An argument ensued in which Anthony is accused of "cursing" at the woman in front her of colleagues. Then, as he passed through border control, he "thrust his middle finger in her face," the Sun writes. The woman called authorities, who arrested Anthony. He was convicted of "indecency and insulting the employee," according to the Sun. Anthony was released after serving three days in a Dubai jail, but now faces a month awaiting his appeal against his penalty of a two-year jail term and deportation order, the Sun says. The man is a United Nations worker who had planned a six-day stopover in Dubai on his way back to the United Kingdom from Asia, according to the Sun's sources. "Brits have often fallen foul of decency laws but no one's been arrested this quickly," one unnamed source from the Dubai courts tells the paper.

One moment's indiscretion can in certain situations lead to a much, much longer period of unpleasant consequences and regret. The world can be scary place, sometimes because the one feeling the fear is the greatest threat. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

None of that surprises me in the least. Our elected officials in Washington get the same kind of breaks, as well some other sundry outrageous perks that defy logic. The fact that after only one term in office they maintain a salary for life, as well as enjoying a cost-free health plan thet's superior to anything we peons could even dream of affording.

Seriously?! My more recent experience is that Americans treat British people as citizens of a third-world country who should be treated as inferior. Maybe I've just had a few bad experiences. I somehow offended an American recently by using the word "toilet". It's a word we see printed on signs everywhere, so I'm not sure where the offence is in that? I think a lot of people are scarily unaware of how different other countries can be and how easily offence can be caused. A few years ago the Japanese Embassy in Paris opened an informal clinic to calm Japanese people visiting Paris who were badly shocked by how impolite and rude the Parisians are. I was born about 60 years ago. And when I was growing up, in the movies, the British were usually portrayed as elegant, polished, and with a stiff upper lip. Not every time, of course, but the British gentlemen and lords were the height of civilized behavior. That's just the movies, of course, and real life is far different from most movies. And there was also the rise of the cockney hero, a lower-class workingman who made good one way or another. But that's what I was referring to when I said the British set an example of how we are supposed to behave politely. Americans (the U.S. version, anyway) were never noted for their manners, in the movie version or in real life. But if you are going to give examples of real life, from recent times, you can find a wide range of both mean and generous behavior from people all over the world. But if this newspaper report was accurate, this Brit was an idiot. Not matter how angry he might have been, when you're at an airport, you are facing heightened security. And to curse and give the finger to a female airport worker because he is blowing off steam, exposed him to arrest. I believe he could have faced detention if the incident happened in the U.S. or Britain, though he would have a less serious legal threat of imprisonment held against him. To put it a different way: You have the right of free speech. But try going to an airport and then start yelling your head off. See what happens then. Edited on Nov 14, 2010, 07:57am
