Download managers I keep reading about these in reviews but before I found this site I'd never heard of them. I am still a bit unclear about what they do and what the advantage is in using them, but as they seem so popular I assume they are worth having? Would someone be kind enough to explain them to me please, and recommend the best one to use and where to download it? I am worried about downloading rogue software. Thanks in advance...

Download managers have a couple of advantages. The most important one: you can stop a download at any time (netsplit, power fail or rebooting the computer) and continue the download where it stopped. Many DL managers allow multiple connections to a site, thereby optimizing the dl speed. Multiple connections means you can either download more than one file at a time, or concentrate on downloading one file via multiple connections for maximum speed. In addition, you can set a maximum download speed and restrict the bandwidth, so downloading won't slow down your machine. Also, dl managers usually offer a batch system, allowing you to add files to a list and the dl manager will download this list step by step (following your set preferences). Some of the free dl managers are also a torrent client, so you don't need to install an extra client if you wish to download from torrent sites. I'm using Internet Download Manager myself. This one is NOT free, I payed like 20 bucks for a registered version and I never regretted it. You can also get a free trial version of IDM that has a couple of functions disabled. Other dl managers are: GetRight or FlashGet or Free Download Manager. Both are ok, but make sure that you download it from a reliable site. Usually, the big PC magazine sites are offering a download section for tools. hope that helps...

First of all a download manager can really speed up things. And if your're downloading larger vid-files, it's almost essential. Been using IDM for years - and it's very easy to use: http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/ You can download it from above and try it for free - but guess it's - to me - the best spend $24.95 in a software... Thanks for all the replies, I'll give Internet Download Manager a try I think, and download it from CNET so I know it's safe. Thank you!
