Of polls and weekly draws and inbreeding!

As I was sitting, reflecting (well, I don't have much else to do except worry about my wife) I was wondering what good our polls do if they do not accurately reflect how the average Porn User feels. I mean, if we are lucky we get 30 people to respond to an interesting question .. hardly a meaningful sample.

On a happy personal note, but still on the same subject as you will see shortly I, for one, am very pleased at the excellent chance I have of winning our weekly draw when only a couple of hundred tickets are out against the 9 or so I hold in my electronic hand but as delighted as I am about my wins I can not help but think that this is not what the founders of Porn Users had in mind when they first started the weekly draw ... that it be won by a handful, over and over.

Same as I am constantly tickled pink when it comes to the intimate and friendly atmosphere in our beloved Forum, yet disturbed at the same time because there are only so few of us.

I think I would rather take a chance on the occasional turmoil in this august group if there were increased participation. One positive side effect would also be that, the greater our number ... in the polls, in the forum ... the more web masters/owners would look in to see what's popular and what isn't and we could exert some real influence.

I would be happier if thousands of tickets were out against my 9 and I would be a lot more excited about the results of our polls if a couple of hundred people had voted, rather than 30.

Therefore a question to Khan and management: Is there any way that the many registered members of PU/TBP who have stayed at the fringes could be informed by general email of all the extras that we few enjoy at the moment and be invited warmly to participate a bit more?

This post was brought on because I found to my shock, the other day, that there are actually folks who have been faithfully using TBP as a guide and gateway to porn sites, yet who are blissfully unaware of all the neat fringe benefits their registration brought with it?

What are your opinions on the subject(s)?

I've had my say and will keep quiet now because I don't know of anything I could add to the observations above. Have at it, mateys ... or not!

I've voiced in the past that I would love to see a lot more particiption in the forum but I've yet to see an increase in the number of new participants. Who knows. maybe 2012 is the breakout year. Long live the Brown Coats.

The simple truth is, the porn experience changes when it is studied and analyzed, as is with forum polls, reviews, forum participation, etc.

The weekly drawing, to me, is not worth it.

Excellent thread, sir messmer.
If I were to stress but a minute disenchantment to this great site, it would be my puzzlement over the appearance of a seemingly lopsided difference in the degree of popularity of the divided sections ... with the forum and polls foremost at the weaker ends.
As I've mentioned, my appetite for pay sites are limited to too few to make me a candidate for most of the reward areas; and those I do join and subscribe to I promptly and happily present a review.... hence, overall, my somewhat disappointing standings in points and the trust ratings department.
My main interest lies solidly in the forum, and its there I spend most of my energies.

Somehow I've forgotten about the weekly drawing. I guess it's only through email that it's done. That's OK, but I need to check more often, I s'pose. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

A very good thread, M!

To take your points in order:

Polls:

Basically, no matter how many potted options you put into a poll, it will not reflect everyones views on a topic.
That is why you nearly always get a significant proportion of 'Other' responses.
In my view, their function is to get a general surfer's global feel on a topic. Whether that is a meaningful sample is debateable, probably not.
I would look at them more as a transient snapshot of opinion.

Entries into the draw:

As I see it, as the purpose is to promote regular participation, it still works on that level.
Accordingly, I have no objection to seeing regular contributors featured in the winner lists regularly.

Forum:

The level of participation in this forum is very high. It is in the top 3 of fora I regularly visit. You always get far more folk registering than ever bother to participate. Why this is I do not know, but it holds true over every forum I have ever visited. I suspect it is that the forum has momentarily attracted the attention of a casual surfer long enough to bother to register, but after a week or so they forget about it.

As regards generating forum activity. The best way I have found is to start a potentially controvertial thread.
(Like you have done in this instance! )
It is the virtual equivalent of lobbing a grenade into a room!

The danger of growing any userbase exponentially is that the sense of community is lost.
A corollary of this is what happened to an Italian motorcycle club I once belonged to. It started off as a bunch of friends with a common interest.
It worked very well indeed.
Pretty well everyone knew everyone else, got on with each other & there was respect & good natured ribbing.
I suppose at that time membership was around the 250 people mark.
The Membership Secretary then took it on herself to go on a huge recruitment drive.
To give her her due it was very sucessful, I think membership peaked at around 1200. The unforseen consequence of that was, whilst there was still a common interest of sorts, the sense of community was totally destroyed.
For example, one meeting that we attended my wife spoke to a guy polishing his bike. His only response was a condescending 'Do I know you?' Obviously his intent in joining the club was merely to show off his expensive motorcycle, rather than interacting with folk with a common interest.

This forum is unique in it's politeness & civility. I would hope to keep it that way.
As with all the problems on social networks with people being anti-social, it is all too easy to 'say' offensive things to people which you never would face to face.
It is a difficult medium, in that you can't see facial expression, tone of voice or body language; so at times things can be read not as they were intended.
Allowances have to be made for that.

As to influence on Webmanagers, difficult to say. I think all you can do is give feedback & allow interaction, both of which are in place here.

As we well know, you can't force people to participate, only encourage.

I find encouraging people to participate to be just about the hardest thing to achieve with a website. I think there will always be a vast majority who will never post anything or even vote in a poll no matter how much they are encouraged. In that sense the subject matter counts against this forum. People are just that much more reticent about interacting with anything adult related. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I guess the silent majority applies to PU like it does to many other things. The really strange thing is that PU unlike most other forums is really open to discuss any subject so it's not like people are limited to only talking about porn. Who knows. maybe 2012 is going to be the year we see more people start to post in the forum. Long live the Brown Coats.
