12% Admit to Watching Online Porn; So Are the Rest Just Lying? I originally thought of posting this a couple weeks back when the forum was a little more active. But now that it's quieted down... The Pew Research Center released a study earlier this month about online video viewing habits (a study they do every few years), and interestingly found that among the types of videos viewed, "Adult" content accounted for what only 12% of those polled admitted to watching. (Here's the full PDF, if you're interested.) Granted this study was conducted over the phone with about a thousand people, so how many were honestly answering that, yeah, they watched or downloaded porn videos from the web is unclear. The study hilariously says that such a low percentage "may reflect a reluctance to report the behavior among some adults." No kidding. I'm betting way more than 12% view "Adult" videos online, because I seriously doubt their local cable access channel will ever show any! And this is the real draw of the Internet: the big, discreet, "anonymous," peep show that lets us indulge in our deep, dark fantasies--a point that the puritanical never quite understand, unless they truly do want to control our thoughts--and never, ever have tell anyone about it. I don't think we'll ever get an accurate picture of who's viewing what online, certainly not when it comes to "Adult" content (making the other categories childish?), and certainly not as we remain, at least in public, a nation of hung-up prudes who supposedly fantasize about nothing more than a safe, conservative marriage partner. ^I agree with you that 12% is way too small for that to be correct. Of course the people being polled over the phone lied. I'd probably lie if I was asked that question over the phone. I'm thinking that the number has to be near 50% if we poll across the different age groups but that number is probably significantly higher with certain age groups. Now if the question is how many pay for it then I fear the numbers will be very low. At least if they specify all the time. Long live the Brown Coats.

Pew Research is conservative leaning, and they produce lots of bad statistics. Other groups have studies this topic, and the number generally comes out to be 33%. Also, one third of porn viewers online are women. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

I think it means that 12% of the respondents were intoxicated at the time of the phone interview. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

"[C]onservative leaning" and "lots of bad statistics" could describe a lot of groups. Even so, 33% still sounds way too low for me. Sort of like how more than 50% of people will believe they are above average when asked by a pollster, a statistical impossibility if there ever was one. My view is that we all do a deed to get our respective rocks off, one way or another--some of us are just a lot more open and honest about it. And I guess this is why I'm so skeptical of all the high and mighty authorities who claim to be so much more virtuous and pure. Right... "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I think that 12% actually sounds high. I never watch that filth and I'm damn sure that no one I hang around with here would ever do it either. Disgusting!

Someone calls me up and asks if I watch porn over the Internet and their name is PEW I'm damn well saying I don't! Could be the cyber police for all I know. But then, if I don't recognize a number on my phone I don't answer so that question would never be asked. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee. I find it very hard to believe that only 12% watch adult material. One thing to consider in this, may be peoples definition of porn, or 'adult' material. I did not read the pdf, but would be interested in seeing how the question was worded. Hell some may think watching a striptease video isn't adult, or a blowjob video. Some may even think straight sex isn't porn. Or again, it could just be people not wanting to admit it. Webmaster/Owner www.SeeMeTease.com amateur modeling site

A lot of people do a lot of things that, when asked, they would deny. This is a prime example of such a potentially embarassing question. My gut feeling is, the actual figure would really be nearer to 60-70%. Cap'n. Even among women, 12 percent would be awfully low. "Whoever has the vagina is in charge." - Megan Fox

I imagine the number of women is increasing. When I still cruised porn shops I saw a lot of women, either with a man or in a group. Only once did I see a woman alone. That was more then ten years ago. With the privacy of the internet I would bet there are plenty of women looking at porn alone. So they must be close to sharing the same percentage as men. I suspect the percentage isn't all that similar, biker. Of my female friends, maybe half -- maybe -- look at porn, and for some of those it's just an occasional thing. Whereas most guys I know are pretty familiar with the field, and some are downright addicted. Still, I'd bet the figure is much larger than 12 percent for women -- at least triple that, probably. I will concede. I was making a guess from my own observations. I wonder who lies about it more? Men or women. Warning Will Robinson

^I would suspect men but only because the number of men who actually watch porn is significantly higher than it is for women. Long live the Brown Coats.

Reminds me of my high school years. We were standing around waiting for the bell to ring after gym and one of the guys mentions that masturbation makes hair grow on your hands. Of course one guy takes a look at his hands. We laughed damn hard at the poor guy. Another moment more and I would have looked at mine. But for the grace of God. Warning Will Robinson
