The US govt, our partner in crime.

There have been past threads about cybersecurity threats.
And it's been mentioned in the past that the US govt loves to snoop, on its citizens as well as anyone else who uses a computer, telephone, or takes a breath (anyone living on this planet).

Here's an update on how the US govt probably has complete access to all Yahoo email accounts.
Without a court order. Why should the US govt need a court order to access private citizens' data, as long as the companies supplying the technology want to remain friendly with the US govt?

And what company wants to be considered "unfriendly" to the US govt?

Hey,

I’m writing to all the Yahoo users on our list with some critical security information. I wanted to make sure you are aware about the massive security breach at Yahoo. Recently it was leaked that Yahoo compromised the security and privacy of hundreds of millions of users by installing a secret program that searched all incoming emails at the request of US intelligence officials.

I strongly recommend that you delete your Yahoo account immediately.

This is what we know so far:

Sometime last year, the US government served Yahoo with a secret order asking them to install a program that would search all of its users incoming message for a specific piece of information called a “selector.” It is unclear what the exact selector was, but the New York Times reports that the US intelligence agency was searching for a “signature” tied to the communications of a state-sponsored terrorist organization.

There have been conflicting reports about what kind of program was installed, with initial reports stating it was probably just a modified version of Yahoo’s existing scanning system that searches all incoming email for malware, spam and images of child pornography. But sources have since told Motherboard that the program was more like a “rootkit,” or a piece of malware that grants a hacker nearly complete and undetectable control over the infected system.

Rootkits generally allow an attacker -- or in this case the government -- to take complete control over a computer or network in a manner that is difficult to detect. This also suggests that the government had much greater access to Yahoo's data than was previously reported. A rootkit could grant total surveillance capability over all data coming into or out of Yahoo's servers.

Delete your Yahoo account, now. Please sign our pledge to continue receiving important updates from Fight for the Future.

This is an absolutely unprecedented privacy violation. Surveillance experts and former government officials are saying they have never seen such a broad demand for real-time digital surveillance.

Even former Yahoo Chief Information Security Officer, Alex Stamos, is appalled by the program. When he found out about it in 2015 he immediately resigned his position, telling coworkers that he had been excluded from the decision to implement the program. He also cited flaws that seriously endangered the security of user data and left the program vulnerable to hackers.

You deserve to have the safety and privacy you expect. It’s time to dump Yahoo. Click here to sign the pledge and join thousands of users who have deleted their account to protect themselves and the people they care about.

Thanks for all you do,

Jeff Lyon

I should add a note that Yahoo is my main email address.

I am not going to delete the email account just because the US govt is a snoop.

You, or the average citizen, can assume that the US govt can access almost any computer, telephone or electronic data that you produce or consume.

Just a thought, to keep in the back of your head.

I do know that cellphones can be monitored legally because the airwaves they use are public domain (meaning your neighbor can listen in on cell and wireless calls legally). However, I don't like the idea of the government snooping on us.

I use my yahoo account mainly for junk mail so they can read it all they want. I don't like it, but what can I do about it?

Before Obama became president, he campaigned for restricted government spying on private citizens.

Once he became president, he changed directions 180 degrees.
And went for greater, more comprehensive programs for government access on private citizens, both home and abroad.

The same for civil rights.
He was for civil rights before he became president. In fact, he was a lawyer who taught classes on constitutional law. He called himself: "a constitutional law professor,"

After he became president, his ideas on the constitution protecting the rights of citizens changed: Then he believed that those in power have the duty to protect their citizens with increased powers of the government.

Your thinking changes when you gain power.

I think the reality is the candidates get the full briefing of what is going on in the real world and it scares the fuck out of them. It used to be they had programs run by the CIA that dealt with the crazies of the world with the President not knowing. Perhaps that time was better when we didn't know. "Dogs think people are Gods. I'm still surprised when I run across folks using Yahoo! Mail. It might as well be Hotmail in my book. I've been running Gmail for over a decade (actually I use two Gmail accounts right now). I technically have a Yahoo! account, but that is simply because I need for access to some Yahoo! Groups.

All that said, I have no guarantee that Google hasn't done the same thing. So far, Apple is the only corporation that has made a big point about standing up for its user's privacy rights in regards to the government. Ironically, it was crap security in Apple's iCloud that lead to the so-called "hacks" behind "The Fappening" awhile back.

The short of it is that I'm not doing anything illegal, so I assume anything I do electronically isn't secure. It shouldn't be that way, but my default assumption is that it is. So don't go making bomb-threat jokes to your friends, lol "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

If you're a law-abiding Internet user
you are not afraid of wiretapping the government and the FBI.

I do not want the government in my business, period! My father was the same way and refused to answer the Census. "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)

The problem is that it's impossible to be a law-abiding citizen because there are too many laws to BE a law-abiding citizen. Everything from your toddler dancing in a youtube video that Prince decides (-ed) was copyright infringement, to tax avoidance by shopping around at different online retailers, and all in a mixture of local, state, and federal jurisdictions. Not to mention the internet would almost certainly get you with the state-lines argument. FWIW, I would almost guarantee you've broken quite a few laws today, but it's not worthwhile for anyone to come and arrest you for them.

But just because you're not being held responsible doesn't mean you haven't broken the laws. Edited on Oct 24, 2016, 11:37am

The problem is we ( us citizens ) keep trusting two parties who really do not care about us. Bush's, Clintons,Obama,.
All have opposed something before they were for it and all have been for something before they were against it.
The two Bushed all lied anyone with a brain knows Iraq had nothing to do with 911, other countries did but we didnt attack them. Bill Clinton lied under oath, lost his license to practice law and was impeached. Hillary is the dodge master there are so many videos of her opposing abortion, for building border walls ( and her hubby saying it too ) its ridiculous. Obama by far the worse so far told us Hillary was not right for this country when she was running for president against him, he she was careless and did not know what she was doing then he made her secretary of state and now supports her for president ? What ? Trump, I have no idea people say he want to close border makes him racist. Yet , Hillary, Bush SR and JR. Bill Clinton and Obama all wanted to build a wall. Now that Trump does they are all against it?

Bottom line you are living in the Twilight Zone if you think Presidents make the country better. I have been voting for many many many decades and what is consistent is all politician are deceitful and lie.
This election is comical, Hillary has her hand so deep down that cookie jar only a fool would ignore it. And Trump has his hand down the ladies pants so far he can read the labels.

Reality people fear what Trump might maybe do based on speeches.
Yet they ignore what all past presidents and Hillary have done with stacks of evidence.
The fact Dems are standing by Hillary shows why the country is broken and people are stupid. Really her husband is impeached and she has broken laws that would place you and I in jail for life. Yet all that people fear what Trump might do is careless and reckless. And 4 years later if Trump is president everyone will be surprised what he did or failed to do. When people run for office no one tells the truth everyone lies get used to it.

The key is the first time a President lies stop listening to him, when a politician like Hillary lies. Stop supporting her. If we punish those who lie to us there is a place for change.
But if you are going to vote party no matter whom it is how stupid they are and no matter what laws they broke or how they treated people? Well this is how they continue to violate our privacy time and time again is we keep letting them in and reward them when they lie. Obama approved the Patriot Act and how many stupid people voted for him again LOL.

Politicians lie stop supporting them when they do !!!! Since 2007
