Downloaders This is one of those questions I felt was too dumb to ask. However, I'll discard my ego for sake of sanity. I never used a downloader mostly cuz I can't figure them out. However, I'm having lots of problems using my browser, Chrome. I intermittently only get partial downloads and it's starting to happen more frequently. Verizon FIOS suggested I try a downloader and a different browser. I use a Mac if that matters. Can someone offer suggestions? Like, recommending a downloader and a browser? And not to push my luck, give brief instructions on how to use it? stoopid jook

Browser: Basically use whatever you want. Firefox, Opera, Chrome.. doesn't really make a difference. Downloader: I'm using InternetDownloadManager (IDM). It comes as a free version, but if you want more functionality, you can buy a licence for like 30$. IDM has an integrated plug in for your browser, which means that whenever you click "download", a window pops up and you can start the download via IDM. It's as simple as it can be.

I use PCs (Window PCs). I use Firefox as my browser. The reason I started using Firefox years ago was because I read that Internet Explorer was very easy for hackers to attack. Firefox is easy to use. It's free. So I've continued to use it. The browser is intuitive: Easy to use. If you have any problems using it (can't get it to do what you want), there are help pages on the internet. I use Down Them All as my download manager. Like Firefox, Down Them All is easy to use. And free. I only use Down Them All in simple downloading tasks. There might be some instruction manuals on the internet, but I've never bothered to read them. So Down Them All can probably do many tricks, that I don't know about. I suggest downloading: Firefox DownThemAll And giving them a try. I believe Firefox (and Down Them All) were originally written for Windows. But there are Mac versions of Firefox. So there is probably a Mac version of Down Them All. If you do try them, how about posting a brief note on how they work for you? PS: The correct name for Down Them All is: DownThemAll! Edited on Nov 28, 2016, 09:51am

Thanks! IDM appears only to work with Windoze. I tried downthemall. It worked! But alas, another browser to get accustomed to, though it was one of the first browsers I used in the Pleistocene epoch. I'll probably only use Firefox for downloads since I'm so accustomed to Chrome and Safari. I'll reply back here when I've had a chance to use downthemall more. I just tried it out with one video and it worked fine.

Try using Firefox for a while on a regular basis. It's very easy and simple to use. The learning curve is exceptional. If you have any questions on how to use it, you can go to the Firefox for Mac support page, and can find easy to use instructions for any problems you might have with firefox. Try firefox, and I believe you will grow to like using it. (I'm not a firefox shill, but I like the program a lot. It's easy to use, and free.) https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/produc...paign=need-help-link I'm not a Mac user, I buy Windows since it's cheaper. But I assume that the Mac firefox should work similar to the Windows version. Firefox is easy to use. Stable. Free. Infrequent crashes. When it does crash, just restart Firefox and you're good to go. I'm a technological troglodyte so if I say something is easy to use you can take that to the bank. I can't comment on browsers because all I use now is Chrome and I find it works well. As for a download manager I recommend Internet Download Manager, as mentioned by bibo. I don't know what functionality the free version offers but I bought the licence and I suspect that it was worth it. It offers a lot of functionality and is easy to use. It will also capture most streaming video, including YouTube. And they update it regularly at no additional cost.

There you go again RA, making me open my dictionary As far as I can tell, IDM only works with Windoze. I'm a Mac guy. I'm still having issues. I am trying downthemall, but it only seems to download 2 or 3 files at a time, albeit large files approaching 3gb. I did find a well-reviewed DM for Mac - FOLX. But alas, I get error messages. From what I can tell, the premium version (not free) may only work with premium sites. I'd spend the money but not without assurance it works. The other distinct possibility is my Internet connection. There's no reason I should be having this problem with 3 browsers and that is, only getting partial downloads at times. But I guess I have to live with it until I either fire Verizon or get a new computer or both. And both of those options are distinct possibilities.

It sounds like you are using Verizon's internet - are you using a portable hotspot or using your phone as a hotspot? Either way, Verizon is bound to be wayyy slower than Comcast or other internet providers, especially when downloading hour-long 1080p porn videos. One thing you can try is switching your DNS servers to Google's or Open DNS's. They are usually much faster than whatever DNS servers are available through your internet provider. There are simple instructions to do this on a Mac.

Super, thanks for the comment. No, I don't use a hotspot. I use Verizon FIOS which is supposedly superior to cable. However, the download speed limit in my building is 50mb, though that's pretty decent. Speed tests show I get about 45mb. Don't get me started about Comcast. I used to use them. Then again, it seems there's a universal law that all cable / optical companies compete to see who can offer the worst customer service. I won't belabor that discussion, though I could go on and on. Having said that, I think there may be a problem with FIOS handling the downloads. It's not only large downloads. I recently had an issue with a 540p download. "One thing you can try is switching your DNS servers to Google's or Open DNS's. They are usually much faster than whatever DNS servers are available through your internet provider. There are simple instructions to do this on a Mac." This is beyond my technical expertise. I don't even know what it means, haha. Who would I ask about this?
