Wow... this is sad news for a woman so young. I didn't collect August's scenes simply because I prefer women with smaller breasts but I can understand why she was popular - she was stunningly beautiful. The second surprise for me is that since I live in a part of the world that isn't known for producing porn stars it was a shock to me to learn that her hometown is only a couple of hours away in a small community whose biggest claim to fame is a world-renowned Catholic university. The same article linked at the top has been updated. She died of asphyxia due to hanging. They don't make it clear if it was suicide or not; they might not know for sure. The bottom text of the article is about a recent controversy she was in. Though it's tempting to fill in the blanks, I'll refrain. It's sad that she died in the prime of her life. 23 is really young. I just saw this news a couple of hours ago - completely shocking and incredibly sad. I've seen people here talk about how they wind up disliking porn stars based on how they represent themselves on Twitter. I don't find that to be the case at all. I'm fine with people having various moods and expressing that on Twitter. August showed off her sexy side on Twitter, but also showed herself as a real fun and witty human being. I liked her a lot and had non-porn conversations with her on Twitter - like about women's MMA. Dead at 23 - I can only imagine how painful this news is for her family and friends. My heart goes out to them. RIP, August. You were awesome! | |

^^The general consensus is that it is suicide and what is even sadder is that the catalyst for her decision to end her life is because of online bullying by not only trolls but a group of performers who attacked her. Yeah, the bullying was pretty vile - and what makes it worse is to see forums where "fans" of August are encouraging online bullying of the people they blame for bullying August - no wonder Trump is president - a lot of people don't seem to learn a damned thing no matter how obvious the lesson. | |

^That's the thing with social media. It doesn't require the posters to actually be social. In fact it is probably the best place for the most anti-social individuals on the planet because they never have to confront the people they attack from behind their keyboard. I think there should be a 10 to 15 minute window where you can delete whatever tweet or post you have written before it actually gets posted online. I don't know if this would help people from making complete asses of themselves but if it only helps one person than it's worth it. I don't want to defend all the people that started attacking the people who attacked August because that's not helpful but I sort of understand why many of them did it. Too many of us develop a kind of relationship with our favorite performers where we feel we know them and that is bound to affect the way we deal with them. I'll finish by saying that it's one thing for an unknown troll to say vile/hurtful things but it's quite another when it's one of your own peers. I don't know what was the ultimate catalyst that pushed August to do what she did but I doubt that being attacked by other people in the industry was helpful. The best example is Jessica Drake who says she was expressing her opinion when she posted comments to August Tweets but the problem is that what she said was based on a level of hypocrisy that is hard to match in the porn industry. Jessica Drake has spent her entire career working for the only company that requires a condom be used in each and every one of their scenes so she is the last person that should comment on condoms and who you work with because her health will never be affected either way. Jessica was one of the loudest voices against condoms in the industry. Now that takes a serious pair of brass balls to push an idea that you yourself are completely against by virtue that you require a condom in each of your scenes. Long live the Brown Coats. pat362 makes the important point about how "social" media turns out actually to be anti-social because those who post can much more easily objectify other people as they are not physically present. It just doesn't bring out the good, and allows for the bad, when it comes to those who are short on empathy and self-control. Perhaps the only good thing about it is that it serves as a way of finding out who the nasty people are, assuming of course that they aren't cowering behind a false identity. But as good things go, it's pretty low on the list. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. | |

My god, the passing of August Ames still hurts. I didn't of course no her, but she seemed like a real genuine and kind person (via some of the interviews conducted with her). She of course was stunningly beautiful, but I always sensed she was much more than just beautiful. I feel like I have been sucker punched and the pain remains. Beyond sad. | |
