Disabling antivirus

I had a good experience with Trueanal and Swallowed. However, they suggest disabling Norton if you have any trouble with downloading.

Honestly I never thought much about this. Did you have any experiences with sites that advise you that an antivirus program should be turned off?

If I did go through and turned off protection then I'd definitely save the downloads directly onto a separate external drive and then scan it with anti virus before opening any of the files.

Ditto what Wittyguy wrote.
Some viruses/malware are easy to remove from your computer once you are infected.
Others can be difficult to remove.

But: the truth is, most professional anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.) do not catch all or even a large number of malware infections.
In 2015, I read an article that said Norton only caught about 50% of the malware infections that are scanned on your PC.

So better to be safe than sorry.
Some malware programs can steal your passwords, credit card numbers, etc., other programs can crash your PC or wipe the drives clean.
Good clean fun for idiots who like to screw you up.
And the rational is: if you're stupid enough to let them steal your money or your data, then you deserve what you get.

That's what I've read from scammers several times.

It many years ago a site, I don't remember it being a porn site, recommended I disable my Norton. I said no. It's there for a reason. Warning Will Robinson
