Favorite movies? Hello guys! How is everyone? Just checking in from the humid PU HQ and a little summer lull. So let's do an ice breaker! What are your favourite movies? I'm partial to a good indie arthouse movie and any movie released by A24 recently. American Honey is one of my favorite films. | |

I haven't been to a movie cinema in a long time. Here are the reasons why: 1. I don't like the digital projection as it looks washed out when compared to film projection. 2. Movies cost a lot of money these days from $11 to $17.50. These prices do not include 3D and premium surcharges. There are a few places which offer $5 for a few of their films, but most of them I don't want to see. 3. Commercials being played on the cinema screen now takes up to 30 minutes. I didn't object too much to the ad slideshow they used to do but now they actually run ads I can watch on television. I will stick to DVD and cable channels like TCM for now. I do want to see Godzilla: King of the Monsters as well as Shazam! However, I'm not a huge fan of Marvel movies from the Mouse House. I also like indie features for the most part. The problem is many are trying to emulate Quentin Tarantino because his early indie movies were huge hits with small budgets. I really do hope John Waters makes another movie as well as Mel Brooks. I may go to an actual theatre once or twice per year. The two most recent movies I saw in the theatre were Rocket Man and Apollo 11. I have an odd (and annoying to some) trait of watching movies I like several times and sometimes many times. Some of the most-watched are quite old, and no, I wasn't alive when they were released or at least I was too young to see them then. Run Silent, Run Deep 1958 this is one of my favourite sub movies. For the time the effects were cutting edge but they look a bit silly now. But the story is great. The Shoes of the Fisherman 1968 this is a polarizing one in that it got terrible reviews and is, admittedly, a terrible movie, though I've likely seen it over 100 times. It's a 'Church procedural' about the election of a new Pope and the chaos he inherits. Godfather 1 and 2 Apollo 13 The Big Lebowski (quite possibly #1 for me) No Country for Old Men (giving Lebowski a run for the top spot) Fargo Hell or High Water Casina Goodfellas Apocalypse Now Das Boot I reserve the right to add to this list as I think of more. | |

It sounds like me and RA are closely related. I don't know any of those older ones he listed but Godfather 1 and 2, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men (maybe my favorite), Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now are all on my list. I also would throw in Scarface and Devil's Advocate. Crazy Al Pacino is one of my favorites. And the big sleeper Carlito's Way. One difference, I like horror movies, mostly older ones like Halloween (even like the Rob Zombie remakes), Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon and Hannibal is my favorite trilogy. One I remember talking to Khan a lot about, anything with The Predator in it, especially after watching Predators and seeing their origin. Here's a couple of horror movies I watched from recommendations. I might have mentioned them before. Babadook, thought it was a great "scary" movie not gory movie. And the one no one but me seems to like, Jug Face. I also rewatch movies. I think I've seen The Christmas Story over 30 times. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I haven't been a theater in over a year and since most of the stuff that is coming out tends to be superhero, sequel remake and what not then I don't know when I will again go to the movies in a theater. I like many of RA's selection and he and I must have a love of submarine because 3 of his titles are submarine movies. I would add The Enemy Below to the list of Submarine movies well worth watching. I'm a romantic at hear so some of my selection will have love stories in them. It started with Eve starring Deanna Durbin, Robert Cummings and Charles Laughton. I'd Rather Be Rich starring Sandra Dee, Robert Goulet and Maurice Chevalier(basically a remake of It Started with Eve) Forbidden Plant starring Leslie Nielson, Anne Francis and walter Pidgeon. Basically Shakespeare The Tempest but with spaceships, invisible monsters and robots. Most John Wayne movies(even the bad ones). Most Humphrey Bogart movie where he's the hero. Not so much when he's the bad guy. Most Mel Brooks movies but especially Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Most Spielberg movies. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

By the list below, you might notice I'm not much of a fan of new movies. I couldn't even tell you what the last movie was that I saw in a theater but it had to have been some time in the early 90s. I love my pause button and the lack of a stranger's head in the way or someone talking about what they did last night. AND there's no trash on MY floor. The Blair Witch Project seems to get a lot of unwarranted scorn but I think a lot of people forget that it was the first major success for a 'found footage' movie. I've only seen it twice though. Not because I don't like it but because it scares the fucking shit out of me. (On a side note, The Exorcist scares me too. I recall first seeing that in the early 80s and being utterly terrified. But at the time I was a devout Roman Catholic so The Exorcist wasn't a horror movie - it was a documentary. As another aside, several years ago I went to the theatre to see a new 'found footage' movie: Apollo 18. Jesus what a terrible movie. Utter crap and not even in a way that might make it a cult classic. One question haunts me: if the fictitious Apollo 18 was the last mission to the moon then how the hell did someone find the footage?) | |

As a child, teenager and early twenty something in India, I did not watch many movies. Bollywood was becoming popular, but I didn't like the Bollywood style of movie. I like those dorky comedies like Austin Powers, Superbad and Napoleon Dynamite. One that is coming out that I want to see is Good Boys. If you have not seen the trailer for it look for the "Good Boys red band trailer". I have not had this much anticipation for a movie before. | |

Yeah it was a film that for me I thought was totally unique when it came out, true lots have the the found footage or reality amateur self shot films, some decent ones and some just awful and unwatchable. Blair witch project I too got scared out of my wits which is unusual as seen loads of horror and rarely get too scared. I hate predictable films which lots of horror films go down and play out like all the rest, so anything that breaks the mould and tries something different I like. Have you seen any of the Wes Anderson films, like like Rushmore or The Royal Tennebaums? His early films dabble in that dorky/somewhat-off style, but he has that unmistakable, detail-driven look and twee-inspired costume design. | |

More movies on my top movie list I forgot to mention: Pulp Fiction Fargo The Big Lebowski Blood Simple Basically, I like movies where I would want to spend time with the characters. Most movies these days forget about the characters in favor of being too stylish or too into the effects. The Dude, Jules, Marge Gunderson are some of the many characters I could spend all day with. I utterly detest musicals. Except for one: Hair. I can't explain it but I love it. I recall seeing a professional troupe from NYC perform it a few years ago. Amazing! I occasionally listed to the soundtrack still too. (And in a way I guess you could call The Blues Brothers a musical too so maybe there are two on my list of favourites. | |

There are some who hate the movie version of Hair as it does not follow the play. Milos Forman took a play with a very limited story and had to flesh it out. They also complain the hippies are shown in a rather unflattering way as they are flawed and make mistakes. I love this movie because Mr Forman used mainly unknowns for the roles. The movie is joyous as well as flawed in how people are portrayed just as in real life. The Blues Brothers is called a musical by those who made it. I don't classify it as such as it feels like so much more. Again, a joyous movie filled with wonderful characters I would spend a long time with. Jules is dangerous if you are on his bad side. But both he and Vincent are actually quite interesting and seem like good people. They just have a job where they do hits on people. "Dogs think people are Gods. ^ All good points. I think I've only seen the movie version of Hair once and that was a long time ago, though, as I said, I regularly listen to the soundtrack. I still listen to the Blues Brothers soundtrack too. | |

I won't reveal any of my top favorite movies because they're all chick flick comedies (no shame, but also a little bit of shame), but I've loved Black Swan since I saw it in theatres. As far as newer movies, I LOVED Crazy Rich Asians -- I'm a sucker for a romcom! | |

For something off the beaten path but still really visually stunning in places and amusing in others, the documentary Encounters at the End of the World by Werner Herzog is a fave. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. | |
