slow download speeds

In review after review by PU members I see the complaint "slow downloads." I've had my share of troubles with this issue, and am curious what other people consider slow downloads.

My standard DL is 2.5 MB/sec. If I get less than 1 MB/sec, I consider it "slow." "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

MY ISP PROVIDER STATES I'M SUPPOSED TO GET 12.5 MB/s DOWNLOAD SPEEDS MAX.
BUT AT MOST SITES, I WAS LUCKY TO GET 4 MB/s.
LATELY, MY ISP CONNECTION HAS BEEN SLOW, AND I'VE BEEN LUCKY TO GET 1-2 MB/s.
I EVEN BOUGHT A NEW CABLE MODEM/ROUTER, BUT THAT DIDN'T HELP MY DOWNLOAD SPEEDS.
THAT'S THE REASON I'VE STOPPED LISTING THE SITE DOWNLOAD SPEEDS IN MOST OF MY RECENT REVIEWS.
BECAUSE MY ISP CONNECTION (SPECTRUM, FORMERLY TIME WARNER CABLE) IS MESSED UP.

Are these download speeds, or the speed of your connection? "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

@Onyx,

THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION.
I'VE RUN SPEED TESTS AT
http://www.speedtest.net/

I'VE BEEN GETTING ANYWHERE FROM 5 Mbps TO ABOUT 30 Mbps WHEN I RUN THE SPEED TESTS, FOR MY DOWNLOAD SPEEDS.

I'VE ALREADY CALLED MY ISP, AND THEY WILL SEND A TECH OUT THIS WEEK, TO CHECK MY CONNECTION.

I'M PAYING FOR A 100 Mbps CONNECTION.
I USED TO GET 100 Mbps AND FASTER SPEEDS AT THE SPEED TEST SITE, BUT FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS, THE CONNECTION HAS BEEN MUCH SLOWER.
THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT A NEW CABLE MODEM/ROUTER FROM AMAZON, BUT IT DIDN'T INCREASE MY DOWNLOAD SPEEDS.

BUT I WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE ISP TECH GUY CHECKS IT OUT.

This thread kind of went awry. I should have asked "Do people consider any speed less than 100% 'slow?'"

I don't consider a site slow until I get less than 50% speed. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

That the whole thing is relative is the reason I asked. I've seen lots of comments on sites that say, "slow downloads." I've read many of those comments, but was wondering if the community at large had a feeling about what constituted "slow downloads." Hence my asking.

Onyx, it really doesn't matter what I'm downloading, slow is slow. It's a little less frustrating with a couple hundred MB, but still frustrating. If you're doing DLs at 50% speed and have x files you want to download, the time is still doubled to download all x. Granted, a really fast, efficient connection takes out the "ARGHH" factor when downloading 4K or VR porn. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

THERE CAN BE BIG DIFFERENCE IN A CONNECTION THAT IS 50% OF YOUR MAX DOWNLOAD SPEED, AND A SITE CONNECTION THAT TAKES SEVERAL MINUTES OR MORE BEFORE IT ALLOWS YOU TO LOGIN TO A SITE. OR CAN TAKE HOURS TO DOWNLOAD A VIDEO CLIP THAT SHOULD ONLY TAKE A COUPLE OF MINUTES IF THE CONNECTION WAS GOOD. OR THAT MAKES A STREAMING VIDEO BASICALLY UNWATCHABLE BECAUSE IT WON'T PLAY, OR STUTTERS AND STOPS TOO OFTEN WHILE YOU'RE TRYING TO VIEW IT.

THE COMPLAINTS I'VE READ AT PU DON'T USUALLY MENTION THE SPECIFIC SPEED THE POSTERS ARE GETTING, JUST THAT THEY ARE HAVING REAL PROBLEMS USING THE SITE.

WHICH IS A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE FROM A COMPLAINT THAT SAYS THE SITE IS NOT GIVING ME MY MAXIMUM RATED DOWNLOAD SPEEDS.

THE COMPLAINT THAT THE SITE IS NOT ALLOWING A PERSON TO ACHIEVE MAX DOWNLOAD SPEEDS IS VALID.

BUT MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS I'VE READ ABOUT SLOW SITE SPEED CONNECTIONS MEAN THERE'S A REAL PROBLEM ABOUT USING THE SITE, BEYOND THE INCONVENIENCE OF A SLOWER DOWNLOAD OF A
4K OR VR VIDEO.
A 4K OR VR VIDEO DOWNLOAD WOULD BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AT SOME SITES, BECAUSE OF THE POOR CONNECTION: NOT ONLY WOULD IT TAKE MANY HOURS FOR A SINGLE FILE DOWNLOAD, IF SUCCESSFUL, BUT THE FILE ITSELF WOULD HAVE MANY FAILED ATTEMPTS TO DOWNLOAD, BECAUSE OF SITE-TIMEOUTS, OR OTHER ISSUES.

SLOW IS SLOW.
A PUDDLE OF WATER IS JUST A SMALLER VERSION OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.
NOT QUITE THE SAME THING.

SOME SLOWS ARE VERY SLOW.
OTHER SLOWS CAN BE VERY FAST.

I wrote my last post when I was really tired. I really shouldn't do that anymore.

@lk2fireone and @onyx, you've basically answered what I wanted to know when I started this thread. Thanks. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

Dumb question - how does one test the MB / sec speed? Speed test reveals I get what I pay for - 1GB download, 1GB upload, or close to it. When I pay attention, it seems like I get about 8MB / sec download per my download manager. But how do I test the per second theoretical speed? Or am I not phrasing that properly?

This is a far cry from what I used to get with Verizon FIOS. The maximum download / upload speed up until 6 months ago was 50MB / 10MB, and I would often not even come close to that. After 2 years of kvetching to Verizon, they upgraded the equipment in my section of the building so I get my present speed. For 2 years, my complaints fell on deaf ears.

I also realize now that some of my reviews in the past complaining about a problem with download speed and streaming was my problem, not a problem of the site.

Thanks. The download speed reported is 518.25 Mbps. Can you explain the rationale for dividing by 8?

Btw, this is roughly half the speed reported by the Verizon speed test site. I ran the tests one right after the other.

By convention, if the "b" is lowercase it means bits. If it is uppercase it means Bytes.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea what the difference was and this solved a mystery for me. I have 300Mb service but when I download I use Internet Download Manager and 'only' see downloads in the high 30s. I assumed I was being throttled somewhere. So I did a speed test and I'm getting 312Mb/s and that translates to 39MB/s, which is what I'm getting.

I'm guessing that you didn't expect to make someone's day brighter with that post, did you.

It also depends on your wireless card. My desktop only has a card that is capable of connecting to 2.4 GHz networks, while my laptop can connect to 5 GHz networks. The 5 GHz network is more the double the speed of my 2.4 GHz network, but the range of the signal is far shorter - I must be seated within about 10-15 feet of my router in order to fully utilize the 5G speeds.

I try to establish a download speed range then go by that. My ISP lists my internet speed as 60 Mbps, but their tech reps have told me for a year that they're steadily increasing the speed. With the 60 Mbps:

I could download from Microsoft or Steam at 9-10 MB/s. I used this as my high-end range or top speed.
A very small amount of porn sites downloaded at 9 MB/s.
The majority of porn sites consistently downloaded at 7-8 MB/s.
A very small amount of porn sites downloaded at 6-7 MB/s. I used this as my low-end.

I didn't consider it slow unless it went below 6 MB/s. Having said that, I received a postcard from my ISP a few days ago that said my area has been upgraded to 100 Mbps (with no price increase). I've used it on 4 sites and all 4 are downloading between 12-13 MB/s, which is a nice boost. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

Mine wasn't quite that slow, but I do remember downloading at 5 k/s. Those were the days of preferring pictures over videos. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

Where is the great era of the analogue modems at 28,8 or 33,6 kbps? If you wanted to view a picture it just took ages and the pictures seemed like coming in line per line. A video just took ages to download ha ha ha.

I have cable connection and I can download up to 23 Mbps. The only site that frustrated me so far was kink.com. Their download speed is very variable and often very slow. I never had this problem with other websites.
