Warning for those who surf porn galleries

I'd like to share a bad experience I've had recently surfing porn galleries that I've been surfing for years. You know, the kind that often bring you to various websites or more random porn galleries as you click them.

Suddenly a window pops up pretending to be "Windows Defender" and claiming you've just hit the motherload of viruses and that, somehow, your firewall is off and you need to click its buttons to solve the problem. The "Defender" quickly seems to take over your computer, demanding that you go to a site where it will ask for credit card or other financial information.

Don't go there! From my decades of experience with computers, I've learned to never trust any messages, emails, or popups. It's a "Ukranian" ruse, designed to steal you information, then your identity.

Talking with the computer experts I work with, the easiest method to deal with this threat is to shut of or logout of the user where this happened, open up a new user or restart in safe mode and then initiate a "System Restore." Problem goes away. Your firewall was never compromised...they just want you to panic and go to their website and give your information. NEVER TRUST THREATS THAT APPEAR ON YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN OR EMAILS, they are designed to get you to panic. Jay G

There's a scheme that's almost parallel to yours. You get a message that you have acquired a virus and then they send you to the "only" place where you can get a program to remove that virus. And btw. I think the danger is not in opening an email but in the attachments (doc and exe) and links contained in emails. If the email is not from a friend I never click on those suckers.

Messmer got a (the) point here: All those porn sites/and others with sudden crazy warnings about viruses and what not: Do not give a damn - if you got your pc well protected.

It's all a scam from different parts - but again - like messmer states: Take really good care of mails with those exe and doc files - DO NOT CLICK on them - unless your're very certain about the content and who send it... "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

It's the antivirus 2009 or 2010 which is very nasty. These two masquerade as your own antivirus software then tell you that you have a virus and your files are infected. The files they try to get you to delete are genuine files that you need. The virus stops you downloading any extra anti virus software or using the system restore. Like the other mentioned ones it then tries to get you to visit a site to buy some anti virus software, but doesn't let you visit any other sites. It's a killer. All you can do is wipe windows completely and start agin. You can get it on any website not just the adult ones. It's out there, is very nasty, and makes you afraid to visit any site. Once you have seen it you recognise it, but even if you spot it in the early stages I don't think there is much you can do.

The classic scam is the web page that when viewed using IE, claims that everyone can see your C: drive and sure enough, a view of your C: drive is displayed on the page, but it doesn't mean that you C: drive is wide open to the world, it's just IE showing you your C: drive.

Yeah, MSNBC had a great article on this a while back - if you search their site, you might be able to find it - it's not just porn sites where this predatory shit goes on.

I got one of those virus/trojan tht loads a software that is really hard to remove. I was able to get rid of it with some luck and the help of a Tech at Microsoft. Long live the Brown Coats.

This kind of shit is the main reason I stopped going to TGP sites. My computer started acting funny even with a current version of Norton installed. I imagine this would be a huge advantage for owning a Mac... Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

I've yet to see a site by itself that installs anything - it comes from a popup, which is just a script. If you pay attention to what you want to allow and disallow, running Firefox with the Adblock and NoScript addons stops all that crap. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I had the problem running an older version of IE on an XP machine, best I can tell something popped up and installed something without my knowledge. With that version, if you disabled pop-ups TGP sites were pretty much worthless as everything is a pop-up...

I never had any such problems using Safari, but the nuisance of dealing with it the first time was enough to turn me off to the whole scene. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.
