New way to make money off Spam? I got just a new email in my inbox. Haven't seen one like it before. Maybe they took a note from graymane's Officer Ron Owen to think up this approach. There are a few things about the email that are suspicious: 1). The email is dated November 1, 2011. But the offense (driving too fast) was supposed to take place November 2, 2011. So I haven't committed the offense yet. 2). The offense supposedly will happen in New York state. I haven't been in New York in around 20 years. .................. .................. It is well past time that ISPs & or the Police should really take more action on fraud / fishing attempts like this. Surely if that had arrived as a letter to you, & you informed the authorities they would have to take action? Cap'n. There are so many fraud/fishings attempts that I don't believe the ISPs and Police pay much attention to them. It would take a huge amount of time to hunt down the people who are behind them. And the laws to punish them for this are not really very specific, especially when you realize a lot of the spammers are out of state or, more commonly, out of the country. I read many years ago that some spammer, located in Nigeria, I think, said that if the people are stupid enough to fall for his spam, they deserved to be taken. And he also said the people who fall for his spam are also rich enough that they could afford to lose some cash. It can be big business, or at least lucrative, to steal from your fellow man. The article on this spammer described him at a teenager who wore gold bracelets on his wrists. So I guess he was making good money off his spam/fraud/whatever you call it.

The funny scam I saw this year was am e-mail claiming to be from the Nigerian government, offering to pay compensation to those who had been scammed. All they have to do is send their identification and bank details... I guess the idea was if someone was daft enough to get scammed once, then they are more likely to fall for it again. I've had several copies of that New York speeding ticket. The scammers have been getting more and more adept at making themselves untraceable, and of course if they are based in a country which does not subscribe to international laws, or has extradition treaties with other countries, then what can authorities in the US or UK etc. actually do about it? I think it's really responsible the Nigerian government is willing to pay compensation to those who have been scammed. Where's the email address that I'm supposed to use to send my identification and bank details to? Is it to the Nigerian embassy? I've always wanted to send an email to some official embassy.

^I never got those. Mine always came from a exiled prince or the family of a loyal general who wants to share all his wealth with some deserving soul like me. Long live the Brown Coats.

I keep getting emails from Twitter and Facebook, notifying me that there are messages I haven't responded to. Except that I'm not a member of Facebook or Twitter. Those of you who are might think twice before you click on any of the links provided in the email.

Part of the problem of social networking sites, particularly Facebook, is that they want you using them a lot, and if you don't then they're are going to bother/remind you that you haven't logged on in a while. I signed up for a Facebook account a few years back, but haven't done anything with it beyond opening it and they periodically send e-mails reminding me of pending friends and that I haven't logged on recently. With sites like Facebook around, which has a constantly changing privacy policy, it's a wonder people care about keeping anything to themselves, much less away from a company with an unnerving amount of your and your friends' personal information. Yes, they probably do send emails to slumbering members but I am not a member of Twitter or Facebook. Yesterday, I got the same sort of reminder from AOL! AOL??? I thought they were long gone. In any case, I've never done business with AOL either. Somebody has something unpleasant hidden in those embedded links, I am sure. I know one thing, I'll never find out what it is.
