Bonus Photoset Material There are quite a few websites which post bonus photosets from other sites. A nice idea in principle. I have never seen a zip function on these though. They are of little value without it. Do they really expect members to bother to download a photo at a time these days? Cap'n. I've subscribed to a couple of sites where the bonus material from other sites could be downloaded zipped. Wish I could remember which! But I do remember that I never downloaded any of the sets because they were usually only offered in their smaller size. I found that rather than promote good will towards a site, these sets (small sized pics or no zip function) only caused resentment. At least they did in me.

There are some web sites that do not offer zip files for their photo sets. The usual given reason is that this discourages piracy. I doubt that not offering zip files stops a lot of piracy. And it can make it much harder for subscribers to download their photos. I personally like zip files for photo sets, and much prefer the sites I join to offer a zip file option.

Undoubtedly. I was really referring to the apparently quite widespread practice of offering bonus photosets without a zip option. Counterproductive, if anything, I would have thought. Cap'n. There's always a strong response about the importance of zipfiles, but I have to say that in my experience it's a relatively small proportion of members who actually download them. Both my currently active sites supply zipfiles, but I have mixed feelings about it as they double the storage requirement and increase my workload. Also zips don't really fit with the style of my main site (SGC). Getting back onto Captain's original topic, I have invited several sites in the past to do a guest update swap but never had any webmaster ever reply to the suggestion. After pursuing it for a long while (it seemed like a good idea to me) I gave up on the whole thing. I'm guessing that the main reason for not giving a zipfile would be it would bypass any chance of commission sales (ie the photos could not be a referral link to the source site). ^I'm not a pic guy by nature but I make it a point to visit the photo section of any site that offers them and they lose points if they don't offer complete photosets in zip files. The reason is that no one wants to download a 100 pic photoset one pic at a time. On the other hand. I can understand where a site whose content is meant to be enjoyed on video would prefer not spending extra money for something that is not popular. Long live the Brown Coats.

On the other hand, not referring specifically to the original question, there are many sites where the quality of the photos is very poor. So whether those photos have a zip option or not, I think very few people would want to download those photos.

^That is very true. My statement was more in the case where the quality is good enough to make it worth saving. Long live the Brown Coats.

With bonus material, I figure whatever they're giving me is a, well, bonus, so if they're not wrapping it up in a pretty zip package and giving it to me to take home, I have no complaints - individual pics are fine, so long as the material is presented well.

Yes, but the fact that they are not bothering to make proper use of it's promotional value is self defeating. Many folk will not bother looking in the first place, when they realise there is no quick download option. It is a similar situation with a lot of static 'bonus' websites. The material there is often poor quality or of very little value anyway. Sometimes more is less. Cap'n. So if the bonus material is displayed well, that's okay? Or does it have to be in a zip file? Most bonus material (in the case of material from other websites) is only of value to the displaying site if it refers members to join the other site. Sticking it in a zipfile blocks that - so there would be no point for the site providing the photos. Most bonus material I've ever been offered has the strict requirement that each photo must be a live link to the source website. That also excludes zip files. Sites don't do it as a free donation, they expect something worthwhile back from it. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

If it is displayed well that is OK, but not as good as the zip option. Sure, I realise it is promotional for the other site, and thats the purpose of it. When you click on the individual photos to view them larger size, that doesn't link to the site anyway in my experience. I don't see that having a zip function effects that either way. For me any 'bonus' material is of limited appeal anyway, as they are heavily edited sets in any case. To return to my original point though, not having a zip function makes it appeal even less. I'm surprised by the questions about whether or not photo content in a site should be in zip files. OF COURSE it should be zip files! Does anyone really have to explain WHY? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.
