I wouldn't call it a major upset because the main theme of the movie is of a girl sent to an insane asylum to get a lobotomy so that she can't reveal something and she dreams all these adventures to escape that reality. I think you could have filmed an ending where she avoids the lobotomy and that would have made for a feel better ending. Long live the Brown Coats.

Sometimes it might be allowed to argue with your wife, but doing it out in the street might be a no-no. New Orleans has a wild reputation, but Nic Cage still needs to be careful when out in public, or he can end up getting arrested for whatever. I've enjoyed some of his movies. I hope he can straighten himself up and not get into really serious trouble. ==================== ==================== Actor Nicolas Cage arrested in New Orleans AP By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, Associated Press Michael Kunzelman, Associated Press – 1 hr 24 mins ago NEW ORLEANS – Actor Nicolas Cage was arrested after he got drunk in the city's French Quarter and argued in the street with his wife over whether a house they were in front of was theirs, police said Saturday. The couple was in front of a home that Cage insisted they were renting, police said. When she said it wasn't theirs, Cage grabbed her arm, according to a police news release. Cage started hitting vehicles and tried to get into a taxi, police said. An officer saw that Cage was drunk and told him to get out of the cab. Cage then started yelling at the officer. The actor has been booked on charges of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness. He was released on $11,000 bond Saturday. Representatives for Cage could not immediately be reached Saturday. Cage has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans, where he has owned property and shot movies. He has also had financial troubles, despite being one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood. He had been behind on taxes and has said he's had to sell numerous assets because of his finances. He sued his former business manager in October 2009 for $20 million, claiming the man's advice led him to financial ruin. Cage won an Academy Award for his performance in 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas."

I own a few of his movies and I really enjoy his style of acting but I've always thought him to be slightly screwed up in the head. These episodes make it hard to watch him on screen because Nicolas Cage the actor overshadows the charater he's portraying. Mind you he's not the only F..d up actor in Hollywood. I think Tom Cruise is still the leader on that front. Long live the Brown Coats.

New Conan movie coming. I saw two previews for Conan the Barbarian, which opens this coming August. Neither preview, at Yahoo, impressed me. One preview was made of very brief images that showed no story, and did not show much of the actor playing Conan. The other preview did a better job of showing Conan as the hero of the movie. But the visual impression I got was that the movie was like a cartoon, even though real actors were being used instead of cartoon animation. I enjoyed the Conan movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but didn't think they were great or really special. But I will probably wait for the DVD on this new Conan.

I just saw the most recent Conan preview and strangely you still don't see much of the actor in those previews. The preview is almost completely a showcase of the CGI effects than they the main charatcter. If that preview was meant to entice me to go see it in theaters than it has failed because I will definetely wait until it comes out on DVD. On the other hand the 2 most recent Green Lantern previews worked because I want to see that movie in a theater. Long live the Brown Coats.

I believe that the Green Lantern movie long ago came and went from theaters. The new advertisements are probably for the release of the DVD. I'll be on vacation for a week - looking forward to strolling around Seattle, doing nothing, basically, and the only movie I'm really interested in seeing is Fast Five, which looks fun and cheesy.

The Green Hornet had a US release date of January, 2011. That movie starred Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. The DVD release date for that movie was May 3, 2011 (this week). Green Lantern is a different movie, not yet released, starring Ryan Reynolds. With so many comic book movies coming out, it's hard to keep them straight.

I just saw the new Thor movie and I really liked it. I saw the 3D version but save your money because it's not worth the extra cash you'll spend for the experience. The best thing about the movie is that you don't need to be a fan of the comic book to appreciate it. The movie is already a hit and guaranteed sequel because it has made over 130 millions with Overseas box office takes. Long live the Brown Coats.

I try to avoid 3D movies for two reasons: the higher ticket price and the eye strain I experience while watching the movie. I've read that a considerable percentage of the population also experiences eye strain from watching the current generation of 3D movies. But the eye strain factor doesn't seem to get a lot of attention in the popular press.

Gee, maybe we should have a whole (non-adult) comic book thread? Hollywood is sure making some serious bank off comic books these last few years. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? You better buckle your seat belt because there are going to be a slew of comic book movies coming out this year and for the next couple of years. We've already had Thor and to this we add another X-Men movie, Captain America, Green Lantern, Smurfs, and Conan. Now those are the ones that are finished and only awaiting release. You know there is a large chance that the new X-Men movie is going to be a hit and seeing as they picked younger actors then we could be stuck at seeing sequels for a few more years. Thor is a hit so there is already a sequel planned. They may have to recast the part played by Nathalie Portman. She may be hard to get with a baby on the way. I can't speak for Captain America and Greeen Lantern. They both look good but that might not translate into box office gold. Long live the Brown Coats.

Who knew that the Walt Disney Company was really the hidden head of the United States government? That it owned and controlled the strike force of our Armed Services? The truth comes out. ---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- Disney Seeks to Trademark 'Seal Team 6' Source: The Hollywood Reporter Fri May 13, 2011, 4:05 pm EDT The Walt Disney Company is attempting to trademark the name “Seal Team 6, the counter-terrorism unit responsible for killing Osama Bin Laden. Filed May 3 (days after news of bin Laden's death broke), Disney's application covers clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and “entertainment and education services,” among other things, according to MediaBistro. Interest in the elite special forces team continues to skyrocket. The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that the book, SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper, is being rushed into stores this week ahead of its originally scheduled May 24 publication date.

Newest Pirates of the Caribbean sequel sinks at opening. The estimated worldwide total is $346 million, the fourth largest global opening ever. This puts into question whether Disney will make a fifth movie in the series. Why would Disney risk making a sequel when the first three movies only made $2.7 billion box office worldwide (not counting DVD sales, TV and cable sales, and merchandising)? Have any PU members seen the latest Pirates? Is it worth seeing? I saw Thor, and thought I wasted my money. But Fast Five with Vin Diesel was enjoyable.

I haven't and don't plan to no matter how much money it makes. The only movie that I enjoyed in the series was the first. The second one wasn't too bad but nothing to write home about. The third one was just horrible to watch. They can make as many as they want because I'm never going to watch another one. Long live the Brown Coats.

On a personal level, I enjoyed the first Pirates the most, the second less, and was kind of bored with the third. Not sure why I didn't like the third, it just seemed like a jumble and the visuals were hard to follow, not as bad as some of the later Bourne movies, but still jumbled visuals. So I might wait to see Pirates on DVD. Or if I get bored, might see it at the movies. The latest Fast 5 was better than I was expecting, and worth seeing. Much more so than Thor, which I thought was disappointing.

^The main reason why I think Pirates of the Caribbean is the best and why all the other after that one are less so is because of the Jack Sparrow. Pirates of the Caribbean was basically a love story with zombie pirates. Jack Sparrow's character was fun to watch and entertaining but he wasn't the protagonist. Will Turner was the hero who's willing to do anything to get the girl he's always loved back. All Jack wants to do is bargain with Barbosa to get his ship back. The problem is Disney soon discovered that Johnny Depps Jack Sparrow was super popular and that's when thing started to get bad. The decided to write more screen time for his character and that's a problem when your main character is a pirate. He's comical and fun to watch but he'd sell your ass to get his ship back. Since the second and third movie simply increased Jack's screen time and the story(ies) stopped being about many characters and mostly about him. They've simply made this last one about him only and that's why I will not watch it. It may seem a little weird for some people but I usually have a hard time with protagonist that are suppose to be bad guys. I will never watch Dexter because the hero is a psychopatic serial killer. Yes, he only kills other serial killers but that doesn't make him a hero or at least it shouldn't. Long live the Brown Coats.

It certainly was. The problem for most such movies to me is this - at a certain point, when the action gets heavy, it gets impossible to know who's in what car, where they're going, why they're going there or why you should care. This movie managed to keep on top of that all the way with just enough cut-away close-ups so you were able to stay engaged and I always felt like I knew who was in what car, where they were going, why they were going there and why I should care. It was a helluva good action movie - and the Rock/Dwayne Johnson really put it over the top.

X-Men: First Class, which opened today, is getting very good reviews from the critics and from audiences. I liked the first two movies in the series, the third one less. Anyway, based on critics (which I don't put a lot of faith in for my personal enjoyment of a film), and audience reaction (which I also don't put a lot of reliance on as a guide to my personal satisfaction), I might see this one at the movies. One thing I like is the movie is not in 3D, which I don't enjoy and which also raises the ticket price.

^I've read a couple of early reviews and the movie looks really intersting. I'm a huge fan of James McAvoy going back to when he played Leto II in Children of Dune. It's on my list of movies to see. I also want to see Kung Fu panda II. Long live the Brown Coats.

I saw Children of Dune but don't remember it very well. I saw Dune much earlier and remember that better, though that was because I read Dune back in the 1960s, long before the movie came out. I also read most of the follow-up books in the Dune series. But I stopped following the novels after Frank Herbert died and his son took over the series. Dune (the movie) bombed. But I didn't think it was that bad, it differed from the novel somewhat, but the novel was very dense and any movie would have been many hours long if it tried to follow the novel closely. As I recall, Children of Dune was a miniseries instead of a movie. But I don't remember much about the miniseries. I liked McAvoy in Wanted. That was a very good action flic. Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman.

I read all the Dune books written by Frank herbert. I think Frank wrote all the books up to and including Chapterhouse Dune. His son has also written some books but like you I haven't read them. The people who made the Dune mini series also made the Children of Dune mini series. The major difference is that the Childen of Dune mini series is in fact a micture of both Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. I thought that the people responsible for both series did an excellent job considering the budget restraint. I liked David Lynch's Dune movie but his version diverts in many areas from the book. There's been talk of doing another Dune movie but I'm not sure it's possible to film such an extensive novel in a movie unless it's 3hrs long. I actually saw an extended version of david Lynch's Dune movie. It was many years ago on an NBC affiliate. The extended version helped fill some of the holes that were created when David had to edit the movie down to fit within the studios 2hrs or less mandate. His take on the Bene Gesserit, Mentat and Fremen was better than series. I saw Wanted the year it was released when I was down at Disney. I liked the way the movie was shot but I left the theater thinking that this movie made very little sense and yet I still bought the DVd and still watch it from time to time. It is visually interesting but I can't say that it's a great story. James McAvoy does make this movie worth watching. Long live the Brown Coats.

The question is often asked - "Why make a US version of a movie that's already been made?" The trailer for the US version of "Girl With a Dragon Tattoo" could be the definitive answer this question: http://www.wired.com/underwire/2011/06/d...oo-trailer-official/ More cinematic brilliance, more chills, more "Holy fucking shit" excitement in many few-second bits of this trailer than in the 3 European films, for my tastes. American film-makers know how to make things "pop". And David Fincher is one of the best film-makers working today.

Making a US version can also bring in big domestic box office. Admittedly Americans are fairly monolingual and this can be a huge barrier to seeing foreign films. Interestingly, films are one America's last great exports (that and military equipment), and most big films now earn more overseas than they do here, even when they are dubbed into another language to fit the market. There is definitely a wow factor to Hollywood films, along with a healthy dose of escapism for our summer blockbusters. Trailer makes it look like it's definitely a Fincher film, and even as a US remake, it was still shot in Sweden with numerous non-American actors. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? If it weren't for Overseas take then many movies would never make their money back. Case in point is the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It has made a little over 714 millions worldwide but only 178 million in the US and canada. The budget for the movie was 250 million and you have to add another 50 to 100 millions for marketing and what hot so Disney would not be singing as happily if it wasn't for all the money coming from non American box office takes. Long live the Brown Coats.

I wasn't terribly keen on the last two movies of the trilogy. I missed the first one. For one, the subtitles were too distracting and for another they really had to change the story line dramatically in order to make a cohesive 2 hour movie out of an 800 page book. Sometimes this can be done very successfully (The Bourne Identity for one) but most of the time the movie will disappoint those who have read the book. I must say that your preview of the American version looks great. I also can't wait to see to what extent they had to alter the basic story line, and if they were more successful than the Swedes. Definitely will be a must see movie for me!

Must-see for me. My opinion of the 3 Swedish movies: 1st one was OK 2nd one blew dead donkey balls 3rd one was quite good, though not terribly exciting visually - but well paced and well-focused and the 3rd film was very strong in showing how similar in personality Blomkvist & Salander were - it made sense why they were so drawn to each other despite finding each other rather annoying. Both were shown as being completely compulsive with not much concern for other people's feelings.

^The only thing I'm not so sure about in the US version of this movie and if it makes money then the sequels is all the different sexual situations that are in the original Swedish version. Europeans and Americans have a very different approach to nudity and sexuality. It's hard to tell what rating a US made movie will get but the rating board could give this movie an X rating if offers similar types of sexual content. That would be the kiss of death for this movie and any possible sequel. Long live the Brown Coats.

Check out Law & Order episodes that deal with sex crimes or any episode of CSI and it's pretty clear that even on broadcast TV US media can deal with pretty kinky stuff. Fincher's been able to get an R rating for pretty intense sexual fare before, like Fight Club. With a major studio backing him, he'll probably do OK. The first movie is the one with the most intense sexual material. I won't detail it in case it's a spoiler for anyone, but apparently that scene was part of his audition for the actresses up for the part of Salander because he wanted to make sure they could handle it.

Don't know much what's going on over there - in North America.. But watch the original first: "Girl With a Dragon Tattoo" Danish/Swedish made - AND that very special Swedish actor, Noomi Rapace who plays that girl with the dragon tattoo is one of a kind. Have you guys in the US and Canada got it in both the original language/subtitles and overdubbed??? Watch it in the original language and try to get used to subtitles.. . Enjoyment of a movie can be a very personal experience. Some critics can rate a movie very high, and other critics can give the same movie a very low score. Same with web site ratings. When I watch a foreign film, I watch it with the original language track and with English subtitles. I don't mind reading subtitles. And the English-dubbed soundtrack of a foreign film is often annoying because the words spoken can be a poor translation of what the actors are actually saying. I personally enjoyed all three Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies made in Sweden. I thought the characters were interesting, and the films held my interest and attention. I especially enjoyed watching Noomi Rapace. And even though Michael Nyqvist was also supposed to be a "hero", I disliked him (not as an actor, but as a character) and wouldn't have shed any tears if he had been killed off. Nyqvist certainly added some flavor to the movies. Annoying and difficult to chew on. But he certainly, in my opinion, made the movies more entertaining. Maybe I was more open to the movies because I have not read the books. I mentioned before that sometimes, when you read a novel and then see the movie, because you already have a visual idea of the novel in your mind, if the movie differs from the novel, you will probably enjoy the movie less. And most movies, for many reasons, do differ from the novel. And those differences can be slight to major and jarring. Anyway, I liked all three of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies made in Sweden. Thought there were very enjoyable. I especially liked the third movie, the conclusion, and felt like cheering when Noomi Rapace was finally vindicated in court. I was firmly on her side, even though Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist both played characters that I would try to avoid in real life. Really strichy characters (my own label for self-centered bastards, which you sometimes encounter in real life).

I didn't see either of the main characters that way, but that could be because I had read the books first. Mikael Blomqvist (Nyquist) was a crusader in a good sense, who would let nothing distract him from his quest for justice, while Elisabet Salander (Noomi Rapace) suffered not only from a traumatic youth but also from Aspberger's Syndrome. She wasn't so much self-centred but emotionally withdrawn and distrustful instead. I strongly recommend the books to everyone. I can honestly state that, after an initial adjustment to the author's (Stieg Larsson) European style of writing .. yes, there is one .. they turned out to be the best and most absorbing books I have ever read. I got the first two in paper back and couldn't wait for the third one to be published so I bought the hardcover version instead. Too bad, Larsson had to die so young!

I must keep my eyes open for a re-run of the Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, Denner, because I missed that one. I liked the third movie, the second one not so much, but found both frustrating because I had to read subtitles. Yes, one can get used to them but it's not the same as being able to study every expression on an actor's face as the story unfolds. Talking about the third movie, actually they were very skillful in their adaptation of the book to screen play. In the book Erika Berger is now working for another paper and those threatening emails come from within that paper (don't want to give away more) yet in the movie there is no mention of that and the blame for the harrassment is put on the "Unit!" As I stated in another post ... they did pull it off.

I saw them all in the original language. I'm pretty used to seeing foreign films in the original languages with subtitles. In the 70's, there were a TON of great German films - and a ton of great Japanese films that I had never seen before - and I lived in a city with an incredible amount of good theaters, so I got quite used to seeing films while reading subtitles. I thought Noomi was good, though I only thought that the 3rd movie had the emotional range that I was craving - even from a character that has a limited emotional range, I just don't think the direction in the first film was more than OK. And cinematically, none of the 3 films were very exciting, so if the characters aren't being directed to have a great depth and if the images on the screen aren't terribly exciting, then all you've got is the story - luckily the story is a damned good one.

Well, she's got kind of small tits, too - though much better looking. Noomi Rapace's ditto are close to ugly - if you really can talk about ugly tits. But in this case I think so - they (Noomi Rapaces) are like we guys used to joke about in the youth: "A couple of coins in a sock". But bottom line - I look forward to the US version. I saw Super 8 this weekend and I loved it. There are some really great things to love about this movie. I kind of understand why Spielberg used the Amblin name to produce the movie. It has a certain ET feel to it but I`m affraid that there are some parts that are definetely not like ET. The interaction between the kids is probably the closest any movie has come to ET and that is great. The part that isn`t so great involves the alien. This is really not ET and that`s kind of too bad. There are some thing in the movie that don`t make a lot of sense and could have been altered or removed and this would still have been a great movie. Long live the Brown Coats.

I have to disagree with you for once, Pink Panther. I just watched "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" last night after having seen the other two movies first and found it very thrilling and well made. Of the three, this one was definitely my favorite and I am wondering if the new American version will be able to top it. Lots of details from the book had to be left out but I think they did a great job coming up with a cohesive and exciting story.

I'm glad you liked the first movie in the trilogy. I liked all three movies. But my favorite was the last one, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. That one had an emotional punch that really got to me, and as I said before, I felt like cheering when Noomi Rapace's character won a victory in the courtroom. All three movies held my interest, even though I did not like the two lead characters. I felt they were cold and self-centered. I realize the Michael Nyqvist character was supposed to be a journalist-hero fighting for truth and exposing corruption and wrong-doing, but he was a self-centered man who put his own fight above the safety of his fellow journalists. That was shown clearly when he refused to back down to the threats of the "Section", even though his main co-journalist, because of death threats, says they have to back away from the story because their personal danger is too great. But Nyqvist goes ahead, on his own, and publishes the story the journalists had been working on. It wasn't just his own life that was at risk.

That courtroom victory was indeed the high point of the whole series for me, so I completely agree. As I mentioned in another spot I liked the 3rd movie of the trilogy with only the subtitles bothering me, a dislike I appear to have overcome with movie one!
I never saw it this way because if you read the books then you know that the publication of the story had to take place at a certain time if they wanted to roll up the section effectively. At least that's how I interpreted it. To me both Nyquist and Lisbeth Salander were quite sympathetic characters. Different, but sympathetic. Edited by Staff on Jun 19, 2011, 02:03pm

I haven't read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books yet. Reading the novel a movie is based on often gives you far greater background and character details. And the movie, because of time constraints mainly, often deletes or changes many details in the plot or characters. I'm watching The Game of Thrones, a series on HBO. Many people have commented that the series is a faithful rendering of the books. But I have found many instances where the TV series leaves out small plot points, or small details in the characterizations. And it bothers me, decreases my enjoyment of the TV series. Because I consider the books a richer experience. As I've said before, it's better for me to see a movie and then read the novel it's based on (assuming I really enjoyed the movie), because that way the movie does not conflict with the story I created in my mind from reading the novel. I am better able to accept differences when I see the movie first, instead of reading the novel first. There's probably some psychological term to describe that experience.

Yes, I think it's far better that people see the movie first and then read the books. In this series of movies I admired how they managed to leave out some very major characters and important sub plots and still have movies that made dramatic sense and stayed true to the main theme as well. P.S. Should you decide to read the books don't give up too soon. The style is different from what we are used to and I almost didn't read the first book because I found the first couple of chapters actually not only boring but confusing. But once I continued I was hooked. Edited on Jun 20, 2011, 09:58am

Stieg Larsson's long-time partner, Eva Gabrielsson, is on tour promoting her memoir of her life with Stieg. She had an interesting view of the Swedish & American-made films - "And while she's no fan of the Swedish movies of the Millennium Trilogy she's intrigued about David Fincher's remake, shooting now in Sweden:'Friends of mine have stumbled over the film crews and have sent me text messages. They're taking care to find very good locations, and so it might be interesting. They’re very ambitious — I like that.'"

I saw the latest Transformer movie. I guess if you liked the first two then you will probably like this one as well. I enjoyed the first Transformer movie and really liked the second but strangely I think that Bay dropped the ball on this one. The special effects are there, his directing style (with an abundance of slow motion shots) are here and most of the cast from number 2 are back. The main exception being Megan Fox's character. We all know why she got the booth. First off I miss Megan Fox. I miss her even more after seeing Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Most models can never make the transition to acting because what you're expected to do in acting versus modeling are diametrically opposed talents. Models are expected to look beautiful(most times) but have no personality to themselves so that what they're wearing or selling takes center stage. You have to have a personality in acting. It's the one you are playing on screen. Micheal bay has picked a model to play in this movie because he wants something beautiful to look at but that won't overshadow all the explosions. He has his Barbie doll and he got her to do all the things he thinks we want to see. The second problem is that the story is complicated and the movies premise made no sense at all. I can't even say what it is because it would spoil one of the movies big secret. The third problem is that it's called the Transformers and the humans are more often on screen than the robots. You have some new Autobots and a shitload of new Decepticons but most of these are only there to be blown up so they are never given actual dialogue or a vehicle to transform into. Long live the Brown Coats.

I saw the Green Lantern and I enjoyed it. Of course I saaw it after Transformers 3 so that might have something to do with it because that was a bad movie. Green lantern is not great cinema and their use of 3D was a joke but there are some good moments and Ryan Reynolds was well casted for the role. If the studios gives the go ahead for a sequel than there is good potentail for a franchise hit. This is the kind of movie that will make good money on dvd. Long live the Brown Coats.

The lights have gone out in Southern California. Prince Billy and his new wife Katie have left the state to return to Englund. Here's hoping they make a movie about the Royal Visit to California, so we can watch and re-watch this earth-shattering tour of the greatest state in the world, Southern California!

I don't think that's going to happen. They've already done a made for TV movie about their romance during their time at university. It bombed. I'd much prefer to know what Kate and Harry thought of the different celebrities they met during their short visit. Long live the Brown Coats.

I kin tell yur a reel royal-watcher. Wit de inside scoop. When did Katie dump Billy for Harry on this trip? Or does she take dem on 2 at a time? Wud that be considered groupie action? A video wit dem performing would sell like hotcakes. Lol. PS: No disrespect intended. To any loyal royal watchers. I missed the wedding, but only because I wasn't invited. I knew I was going to get caught with my error. I meant Kate and William. I don't think a sex tape of them would sell well unless he's got a giant Royal scepter that she polishes using her (I leave it to your imagination). I'm not really a Royal watcher but I did follow what they were doing when they were in Quebec. They make a nice couple and seem genuine. At least as genuine as any person from the immediate Royal family can ever look. Long live the Brown Coats.
