Question re new WD Passport Drives with Data Encryption

Questions about portable harddrives usually generate a lot of discussion here. Western Digital seems to be a common brand with a lot of people liking them and some not. I have 7 in total where I store my collection and have never had a problem. My question is specific though: does anyone here have any experience with a new WD drive with the hardware-based encryption? How does it work? Is it relatively easy to use? Does it make the drive run a lot slower? Is there a problem running video off the drive with the encryption? Is the interface easy to use?

Thanks for any advice and assistance.

rearadmiral, I have a WD drive that does data encryption - although it is software based. Do you mean the drive comes with a hardware key of some kind? Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

That's my understanding. The WD site says that it is hardware based, so I think the only way to run it is with some key.

Ah, well I have never used one of those. Although it seems a hardware key might not be a great idea - as you could lose it or someone else could find it and unlock your data. We have USB keys to run some software at my office, and they are surprisingly fragile, we've had to replace one of them twice - I'm not sure what you would do if your key became damaged, I imagine your data would be lost. I'm curious.
Do you have a link to someplace that sells it or even a model number?

I guess I could google it.

Okay.

It looks like we're talking about the My Passport Essential SE.
On amazon someone does mention it has a hardware key, though people were complaining about the software automatically installed. I guess you can remove it.
I'll probably get one of these the next time I get an external which will probably be a few months from now.

Ummm why would anyone need data encryption ?
Porn is still legal.

Personally, I think having that type of setup will slow the pc access to the HD and make others wonder why one needs to hide porn?

If one is hiding porn its because of one of three things.

1. they have an " SO " that doesn't approve.
2. they have material they should not.
3. they are addicted or ashamed of the material they have.

Just being honest :-) Since 2007

Hey rearadmiral, I have a Western Digital MyBook Elite that does "hardware encryption". I totally misunderstood your original question, the hardware encryption is not in the form of some type of physical key - it just means the drive encrypts the files when you back them up. I have played around with it a bit, and in my mind it is totally worthless. The only way to use it is with the WD software, and it appears that you can only do it when you back up your computer. Since you cannot select directories to backup, it just backs up the whole damn computer - which is beyond stupid.

You can, however, put a password on the drive, although if you manually drag and drop in windows, the files wont be encryted, but one cannot access the drive without the password.

I sort of have a hard time figuring out what purpose encrypting has, as if you have the password to the drive you can decrypt them. So why not just not encrypt the files, and use the password? Same difference as far as I can tell.

I do like the drive, however and haven't had any problems with it. I don't know about the ones that are USB powered, I've read some pretty bad reviews of those.

Hope that helps, sorry if it was a convoluted response, been a long day and my brain ain't working so good. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

Well that's me. It's been discussed here before, but I wouldn't want friends or family to find my porn stash even after I'm dead. Not so much for me, but for them. They'd be pretty disturbed and saddened when they found 18 external drives filled with porn.

But I don't really care that much or I would have done something about it by now.
