King Carl Gustav Of Sweden In Trouble! Here's the whole story: http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/World/20110606...club-scandal-110606/ I'm usually not one to gossip about Royalty but this article caught my attention because of one paragraph in it: "...the king was not accused of anything illegal and Swedes don't get into a moral panic about extramarital affairs. But the question of strip club visits -- frowned upon in Sweden's egalitarian society -- would not go away." Different countries, different attitudes. Here in Canada a visit to a strip club would not be a major moral offense but adultery sure would be! Denner, I know you are Danish, not Swedish but would the same be true in Denmark: that adultery is seen as the lesser offense and that stripping (or porn?) is now considered demeaning to women?

Well, they've got us talking about it, don't they? Messmer, don't take this personally, but maybe the best answer to the story-craving, buzz-obsessed, "let-us-do-the-thinking-(?)-for-you" media is simply, "Who gives a shit?" Besides, why can't the king, of all people, just have private lap dances at the palace? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Couldn't agree with you more, Drooler. "I don't give a shit" is usually my attitude when it comes to the rich and famous. But Sweden and Denmark were my first countries where I could get real Porn and it shocks me no end that they would have a moral problem when it comes to strippers yet are cool with extra marital affairs! Sounds weird to someone who had the highest regard for the healthy sexuality of Scandinavians.

People in Denmark and Sweden are divided in two - one part want to keep the monarchy as a tradition and a tourist/economic magnet - the other part want to get rid of it becuase "royal blood" is outdated and ridiciolous. This kings interest in and/or visits to sexclubs or whatever is to the people in general not so much a moral issue, but about being an example for "his people" by NOT getting caught on photo or tape - and the press loves to create royal "scandals". A lot of reader reactions have been: - Hey, let the guy watch strip, for Heavens sake... But what really has created the latest headlines in both countries about this king was his miserable/embarrassing attempt to defend and deny everything on TV.....some of these royals are not the smartest in the world....hey, who said inbreeding, ho,ho "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Thanks, Denner, that cleared things up quite a bit. I am proud of my Scandinavians who said: Hey, let the guy watch strip, for Heavens sake! Those are the people I thought I knew!

I guess some things just will not go quietly into the night. Monarchy has that characteristic, it seems, big time. We even had "King George" here in the US for 8 wonderful years. Not formally a king, but he seemed to be taking on the trappings (mmm, wire-tappings, for instance?) of a closer-to-absolute ruler. Somehow that issue, warrantless wiretapping, seems to have gone away with him. We get a lot of press in the US about the British royalty. No disrespect to them, but I couldn't care about them any more than about the juicy gossip in the neighborhood, which is to say, not at all. I hope some day that these royals and nobles can just call it quits -- without a bloody revolution. It wasn't possible for us nor for the French, but these days, I think it might be. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

The amount of money generated by anything attached to Royal families is enormous. I can imagine how some of the French of today must feel for having executed what would be an gigantic cash cow of tourist money today. They just have to look at their British cousins to see just how much money the French Revolution has cost them over the years. Long live the Brown Coats.

No it hasn't: from PolitiFact. I think Bush II is guiltier, at least on this issue, for introducing such unconstitutional nonsense, but the idea that Obama is some sort of radical liberal and would never do such things is ridiculous. It's why I scratch my head every time someone starts screeching about how Obama is some sort of ultra-left socialist. But the greater problem is when measures get introduced, such as this wiretapping bullshit, subsequent leaders seem to find them too enticing to risk outlawing them. I mean, fuck, there's a war on! This is no time to be bothering with the Bill of Rights! Still, Bush II & Co. expanded the power of the White House to some pretty crazy extremes, particularly in regards to defining torture/"enhanced interrogation," and in use of the military in general. Hey, if you can't even win the popular vote, why give a shit about citizens in the first place? "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I guess I lean more towards the latter, because I see the real scandal as being a country as modern as Denmark still having a monarchy--even if only symbolic--in the year 2011. And frankly, I think, anybody who is still interested in the perpetuation of royalty, whether through weddings or puerile scandal, should have their head examined (though not cut off)! There is nothing to romanticize in a post-Enlightenment era about a person and/or family who were simply born into their imaginary power. I don't advocate cutting anyone's head off--just their taxpayer-funded bank account. --- Sorry, but talk of royalty always gets my liberty-oriented blood boiling. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I bet the majority of French are thankful they don't live under a Medieval-style group of tyrants masquerading as some sort of VIP family that's in charge of the country. Plus, when the French gave the royals the boot (or the blade) they left the architecture intact, so there's plenty leftover with which to attract tourists. Just my . If turboshaft lived on the island of Tanna, he could worship Prince Phillip as a god. I'm not sure if that means turboshaft couldn't practice other religions or politics. ----------------------------- ----------------------------- UK Queen's feisty husband Prince Philip turns 90 Reuters 2011-06-09 LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Britain's Prince Philip, renowned for his blunt talk and verbal gaffes, turns 90 on Friday, spending the day as he has much of life performing official duties in his role as Queen Elizabeth's husband. The son of the exiled Prince Andrew of Greece, Philip married the queen in 1947 and is now the longest-serving consort and oldest-serving spouse of any British monarch. Despite being a near constant companion at the queen's side during her long reign, the still sprightly prince has rarely sought the limelight himself. His birthday will be in keeping with that low-key style; he will hold a reception to mark the centenary of a charity for the deaf and in the evening he will chair a conference for senior British military figures followed by a dinner. "It's a normal working day for him. There's no celebration as such," his spokeswoman said. The only formal event to mark his birthday will take place on Sunday with a special service at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, one of the queen's residences, west of London, which will be attended by most of the royal family. Philip, the oldest living great-great-grandchild of Britain's Queen Victoria, was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921. His family was forced into exile when Philip was 18 months old and he came to England as a child, later becoming a naturalized British citizen. He served in the Royal Navy during World War Two, taking part in the Allied landings in Sicily and was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered in 1945. He first met his future wife when she was 13 and visited the naval college where he was a cadet, and following the war they got engaged, when he was given the title the Duke of Edinburgh. "STRENGTH AND STAY" As the queen's husband he has no clear constitutional role, although he does accompany his wife on most of her official engagements in Britain and all her foreign trips. "He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years," the queen said in a personal tribute to Philip during a speech to mark their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. "I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know." His most notable achievement is the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme for young people, which is estimated to have attracted about seven million participants from 132 countries since 1956. In an interview with the BBC to be aired on Thursday, Philip himself said he took no credit for the scheme, and gave a typically blunt answer when asked if he thought he had been successful in his royal role. "I couldn't care less," he said, adding that he would be winding down his official engagements. "Who cares what I think about it, I mean it's ridiculous." It is for such gruff remarks, and unguarded comments and gaffes that he is best-known, with his sayings even being published in several books. He once told British students in China: "If you stay here much longer, you'll be slitty-eyed" and asked Aborigines in Australia if they still threw spears at each other. Prime Minister David Cameron said Philip had always done things "in his own inimitable way, with a down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach that the British people I believe find endearing." While Philip has spent his life in the shadow of the queen, there is one place where he outshines his wife -- on the south Pacific island of Tanna in the Vanuatu group, where the locals worship him as a god. Not all royals are completely useless. When Kate Middleton (Prince William's new wife, who is now a duchess) went shopping, she carried her own shopping bags back to her car. Is that democratic or what? ....................... ....................... Kate Middleton Goes Shopping in Hot Pink, Carries Own Bags Us Magazine - 37 minutes ago Royal errands day! Kate Middleton -- er, Princess Catherine -- made one of her first casual post-wedding, post-honeymoon appearances in London on Thursday. Although Prince William's wife, 29, has been photographed at a couple formal events -- a meet-and-greet with President Barack and Michelle Obama, plus last week's Derby Day in Epsom, England -- Kate finally stepped out in everyday gear visiting hat-makers Lock & Co. Wearing a hot pink fuschia dress and a black cardigan, Kate wore her typical wedges, which showed off her impressively toned legs. The brand-new Duchess was surrounded by royal protection officers during the errand. But despite her now-royal status, England's future Queen still carried her own bags back to her car. Kate and William, 28, will be more dressed up later on Thursday evening, where they'll attend the 10th Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) Dinner. Held at Perk's Field (near their future home Kensington Palace), the glam gala will benefit the Foundation for Princes William and Harry.

Sorry, but I worship neither gods nor people (save for the occasional lady who has left me temporarily dropping to my knees... ), but thanks for the thought. However, the weather on Tanna sounds pretty nice, and who knows, maybe I could get use to wearing a penis sheath, as the more traditional native males there supposedly still do.
